Chapter 1 My Husband Wanted to Kill Me
Someone wanted to kill me!
It was evening, and I was out for a walk by the lake with my cane. The wind brushed against my face, carrying the faint smell of the water.
Yes, I was blind, and this man-made lake was a place I came to almost every other day. It was quiet here, and it brought me peace.
But today, something felt off.
Every now and then, I heard faint rustling behind me. My hearing had gotten sharp since I lost my sight, and I could tell someone was following me.
I sped up, trying to get away, but suddenly—wham! Something smashed hard against my temple!
My mind went blank, and I could feel warm blood trickling down where I'd been hit. The next thing I knew, I was shoved into the cold lake.
I thrashed around and was drowning in the freezing water. At that moment, my daughter Mia's innocent face flashed before me.
'She's only five. She can't lose her mother like this!' I told myself inwardly.
The water swallowed me, filling my nose and mouth, and my world was nothing but black. But Mia, like a flicker of light, guided me to keep fighting.
Driven by pure instinct as a mother, I grabbed onto some vines hanging over the edge and pulled myself out.
"Mia... Anthony... Kailey... Somebody help me!" I shouted in a weak tone.
My vision blurred, like an old TV screen flashing with static.
My head throbbed, and so did my eyes.
And then, after nearly eight years of darkness, something unbelievable happened: I could see again!
Before me was a dusky sky, dense and shadowy trees, and the murky green lake scattered with rotting leaves. The air reeked of decay, like death had left its mark.
I nearly died, but somehow, I regained my sight.
"Oh my God, I can see! I can SEE!" I exclaimed with excitement.
I was terrified and ecstatic all at once, and without thinking, I bolted home.
'Anthony! My dear, someone tried to kill me!'
I stumbled into the house and froze. There, on the marble dining table, were two bodies tangled together.
They were Anthony, my husband, and Kailey, our nanny! They didn't even notice me!
'No! This can't be real!'
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My fingers trembled as I touched my eyes and stared blankly at them, feeling lost.
"Caroline?!" Anthony practically jumped out of his skin and nearly fell off the table.
"How are you still al—" Kailey's words cut off, her face going pale like she'd just seen something unbelievable.
The looks on their faces told me something was really wrong. Anthony's guilty, nervous expression only made me more tense.
"Caroline... how did you get back? You're soaked, and where's your cane?" Anthony cleared his throat, trying to slip back into his usual gentle tone.
He slowly put his pants on, not even bothering to cover himself in front of me after what they'd just done.
"I... I grabbed a branch, and... and somehow crawled my way back," I stammered.
The joy I had felt from seeing again was all swallowed up by the horror in front of me.
I could hardly believe what my eyes were showing me.
I almost wished I couldn't see at all. If I hadn't seen all this, maybe I could've pretended life was still perfect and normal.
Tears started to fall as I said, "I was nearly killed, Anthony! Someone hit me in the head and shoved me into the lake!"
"What? That's terrible! We have to call the police!" His voice was full of outrage.
If I hadn't caught the look he shared with Kailey, I'd almost fallen for his soft and reliable tone.
Kailey chimed in, fake as ever. "Yeah, how awful that person is!"
But there was a smug grin on her face, just barely there.
Then, a thought suddenly hit me: they had something to do with it!
"Oh, sweetie, you're bleeding. Go upstairs and wait; I'll come to patch you up in a bit, okay?" Kailey said with a sweet smile as she zipped up her top to cover her chest.
She grabbed Anthony's tie and yanked him down for a passionate kiss right in front of me.
My fists clenched so hard that I could feel my nails digging into my palms.
'Kailey! That b***h!'
Five years ago, Anthony and I were just married, and we were so happy and in love. She showed up at our door to apply for a job.
I still remember her sob story about her husband being an alcoholic who got into a car accident and couldn't work, and she needed a job as a nanny to support her family.
I turned her down, but she kept coming back. She cried and fell to her knees while clinging to my legs and begging.
We were just an ordinary newlywed couple, and we didn't plan on hiring any help.
Besides, our neighbor Mary had warned me that Kailey looked way too seductive to be a nanny.
But I couldn't resist her pleading. I felt sorry for her situation, so I hired her anyway. I paid her generously and never complained about her hours.
After all, what could a blind woman like me notice?
I only wanted her to help out around the house and look after Anthony. I never thought she'd end up sleeping with my husband!
What a sneaky snake!
I wanted to run over and slap the hell out of both of them right then and there.
Anthony handed me a spare cane and said, "Go take some rest, Caroline. I'll take care of everything."
His warm hand gently rubbed my back and guided me toward the stairs.
My mind was spinning, but I swallowed my tears and pretended I was still blind. With the cane in hand, I made my way upstairs.
The second I was in my room, I slammed the door shut and buried myself under the covers to cry.
"No, no way! When did Anthony start cheating on me? I'm such an i***t! They played me like a fool!" I cursed myself and my stupidity.
Then, as I lifted my head, something caught my eye—a baseball bat leaning against the wall by Anthony's desk.
Fresh blood was still dripping onto the floor from the baseball bat.
I froze, and my whole body went numb. The blood in my veins felt like it had turned to ice.
In the mirror across from the bed, I saw a woman staring back at me. With wild hair, a deep, bloody dent in her forehead, pale skin, and eyes filled with despair, she looked like she'd just crawled out of hell.
'This can't be real,' I thought.
I stumbled out of bed, my legs giving way as I collapsed to the floor.
Crawling over to the bat, I grabbed it and lifted it to my head. The dent in my forehead lined up perfectly with the bat.
Suddenly, the bat fell from my hands, and I collapsed beside it, my body trembling.
My cheating husband... was the one who tried to kill me!
