CHAPTER ONE — THE CLIFF RESCUE
The wind tore across the cliffside, sharp and cold, carrying the scent of salt and storm. Annabel Clarke wrapped her coat tighter as she walked the narrow coastal path. She’d come here to clear her head — to breathe, to think, to escape the growing fear around her grandmother’s worsening heart condition.
But everything changed the moment she rounded the bend.
A man stood dangerously close to the edge, shoulders hunched, swaying slightly. Annabel froze. Something inside her twisted — instinct, fear, something deeper she couldn’t name.
“Are you alright?” she called, voice trembling.
He didn’t turn.
Annabel stepped closer. “Please… step back.”
He finally turned his head, and she saw the exhaustion in his eyes — the kind that came from more than lack of sleep. He looked broken. Lost.
His foot slipped.
Annabel gasped. “No!”
She lunged forward, grabbing his arm just as his weight tipped forward. Her boots skidded on the wet grass. For a terrifying moment, she thought they would both fall.
But she held on. “Hold on to me!” she cried, digging her heels into the ground.
He clung to her, breath ragged. Inch by inch, she pulled him back until they collapsed onto the grass, gasping. For a moment, neither spoke.
Then he looked at her — really looked — and something electric passed between them. Recognition without memory. Connection without explanation.
“You saved my life,” he whispered.
Annabel shook her head, breathless. “You scared me half to death.”
He reached for her hand, lifting it gently, pressing a soft kiss to her knuckles.
“Thank you, sweet girl,” he murmured. “I’ll find you again.”
Her heart stuttered. “You don’t even know my name.”
“I’ll still find you.”
Before she could respond, she heard her name being shouted.
“Annabel!” Her family rushed toward her — Aaron, Harriet, Sophia, Alice — panic etched across their faces.
“What happened?” her father demanded.
Annabel turned back toward the man — but he was already stepping away, disappearing into the mist.
“I’m fine,” she whispered.
“We need to go,” Harriet said urgently. “It’s Grandma… she’s taken a turn.”
Annabel’s breath caught. “Gladys?”
Harriet nodded. “We need to get to her. Now.” Annabel looked once more toward the cliffs, toward the man who had vanished.
She didn’t know his name.
