Prologue
Cyrus’s P.O.V I am a warrior others look up to. A warrior who embodies light and hope. Everyone admires me because I fight against the creatures that plague the land of mortals. But with this admiration comes the weight of my freedom. They believe I was chosen by God to save mankind, simply because of the dazzling light of the star that shone in the sky at my birth. Yet I know this belief stems from their desperation to conquer fear. This fantasy has become the cage that confines my life. My father has forced me into the role of a warrior… a role fraught with peril. I am trapped by an obligation placed upon my shoulders, with no escape in sight. My hands are stained with blood—a mark that cannot be washed away, etched deeply into my heart and mind. It haunts me, making me feel worse than the very monsters I slay. To people, my actions are noble, but I cannot shake the weight of guilt that clings to me like a shadow. Am I justified in killing these monsters, or am I simply a reflection of their cruelty? But now, before me stands a girl whose gentle face halts my resolve. Her gaze holds a profound sadness that captivates me. I cannot move… What is happening? Her eyes seemed to tame my wild heart. I clutched my chest, feeling a strange pain. She exerts an inexplicable power over me, tightening its grip and rendering me motionless. "Who are you? What are you doing to me?" I stammered. She steps closer, her mesmerizing eyes silently urging me not to hurt her. "What are you doing, Cyrus? Kill her! Now!" my father screamed from behind me. Yet, no matter how hard I try, I remain rooted in place. When she finally approaches, she gently touches my cheek, captivating me further. It feels as though I've lost my mind as if she possesses the power to control my very soul. "You can’t hurt me… because we are destined for each other," her voice is soft, a soothing melody. I snap back to reality as my father’s voice pierces through the fog. "Don’t listen to her, son! Don’t be fooled by her face! She’s a monster; you must kill her!" Her soft hand, her red lips, her angelic visage—all too far from the visage of a monster. The woman shakes her head slowly, inching her face closer until her breath brushes against my skin. "You are my twin flame… and we are meant to meet—" "What are you doing, Cyrus?! If you don’t kill her, she will kill us!" my father’s panic jolts me into action. "I won’t hurt you," the woman pleads gently. "Son!" my father exclaims, desperation lacing his voice. Torn and trembling, I grip the hilt of my sword tightly. In a moment of resolution, I stabbed the woman as my father commanded. "I am only being tricked," I assert, though uncertainty gnaws at me. She grips my shoulder tightly, and I lose my balance. To my shock, she coughs up blood, staining my hands. I stand frozen, unable to comprehend what has just occurred. "W-what… How did this happen?" I turn to my father, my mind racing in disbelief. Her blood… it is not the black ichor of other monsters; it is red—human blood. My hands tremble as her crimson essence stains my skin. Is she truly human? But I witnessed her unleash an extraordinary power; my own eyes saw her burning like fire, dazzling like the sun. Her body crumpled to the ground, leaving me paralyzed with confusion. My thoughts spiral into chaos. My father grips my shoulder from behind, pulling me back. "Let’s go, son." "I-I killed a h-human? F-father?" I stammered, releasing my sword. "No… you made the right decision. She was still a monster! You know that," my father insists, though worry shadows his features. "But she didn’t hurt us?!" I whispered, my voice trembling. "Wake up, Cyrus! We wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t been meddling in this realm! You did what you had to!" He retrieves my sword, dragging me away from her lifeless body. --- Emerging from my room, I was met with distant cries for help. I know those screams all too well. Instinctively, I drew my sword. A presence looms, watching me. I tightened my grip on the hilt. "I know you’re there! Show yourself!" I shouted, my voice echoing with authority. A shrill laugh pierces the air, mingling with the desperate cries around me. They are not human. "Come out! I know you’re a monster—I can sense your malevolence." "And I feel your fear too," the voice replies, still hidden. "Am I the one who’s afraid? Or are you too cowardly to reveal yourself?!" I retorted, sarcasm dripping from my words. Silence stretches between us—no response. I sense a presence behind me, spinning to attack, but find nothing. "Get out, coward! You’re wasting my time!" "I'm only in your dreams—the dream monster. When you see me, you’ll never wake up again!" His voice reverberates, sending chills down my spine. But fear does not grip me; I have faced many monsters, far more cruel and powerful than this one. "If you wanted to kill me, you would have shown yourself by now. What do you want from me—a fool who despises you?" I yell, but he only laughs, unleashing a deafening noise that shatters the night. I cover my ears, but the sound slices through me, forcing a scream of agony from my lips. It feels as if my ears are about to bleed. The Dream Demon halts, and a shadow materializes before me. "I wanted to kill you, but I’d rather watch you suffer for the lives you’ve taken. The prophecy is set. You cannot escape what is written. When the next red moon rises, you will face your judgment—a punishment that will make you long for death." As he speaks, darkness closes in around me, suffocating my breath. I woke, gasping for air. I clutch my collar, opening the first button of my shirt to breathe more easily. Goosebumps prickle my skin; a chill course through me. "Was that a nightmare or a threat?" I whispered weakly. "Threat? Where?" My father enters, alarm etched on his face. "Nothing… just a bad dream," I replied, pouring a drink to steady my nerves. "Why are you here, Father?" "We leave for the west in two days. A royal decree has arrived from the empire of Agnarr regarding a creature disturbing their land—the king demands you eliminate it to quell his people's fear." "Is this a request or an order I cannot refuse?" I asked coldly. "This is a royal request," he asserts. "And a punishment," I muttered sarcastically. "Son?!" my father snaps, frustration boiling over. "I won’t sleep well with your demands hanging over me. Aren’t you concerned this could lead to my death?" "Is that how you feel? You can abandon your people. Reject what heaven has given you." "General," I replied emphatically, "You and your people are the only ones who believe I am heaven’s chosen. This so-called gift is a curse; you forced me into this role." "You’ve become a brave warrior and a hero—" "A warrior, yes, but your son, who is always entangled in battles that could cost me my life. These hands are stained with the black blood of monsters I’ve slain, yet my violence is also tainted with red blood." Exhaustion washes over me, burdened by his expectations. "She’s not human," my father insists, but that does nothing to cleanse my guilt. No matter what I say, I cannot win against my father. I stand tall, silent, and let him have his victory. The day arrives; we set forth for Agnarr. As night fell, I prepared with my father’s soldiers to search the mountains. "We are ready," one soldier reports. "Then let’s go," I replied. My father enters my tent. "Be careful, son, and ensure you return to us," he warns, concern etched into his features. "You can hope," I replied blankly. My thoughts linger on what awaits me tonight—especially under the ominous red moon. We reach the mountain's base, and an unsettling presence washes over me, unlike anything I’ve faced before. Everyone walks cautiously, growing more vigilant as darkness descends. I cannot fathom what monster lies ahead. “May the god who chose me guide me,” I think. We spot a light in the distance and move toward it, only to be stunned as a woman appears before us. Her hair glows like fire, and her eyes burn with intensity. Her gentle face and snow-white skin exude beauty, yet I know she carries danger. "You are the woman with red blood," “Leave this place… this is your last chance,” the woman warned before vanishing like a wisp of smoke. “She’s not truly human,” I murmured, steeling my resolve to venture further into the darkness of the hut. As I pressed onward, I noticed an old man with dark, penetrating eyes, standing as if he had been expecting us. My soldiers quickly formed a defensive circle around us, sensing the palpable tension in the air. Then I spotted the woman with amber eyes lingering just behind the old man. “It seems my father was referring to you,” I stated firmly, my voice unwavering. “You’re quite bold, stranger,” the old man replied, a glimmer of disdain in his voice. “To tread upon my territory.” “You’re no monster,” I declared, feeling the truth resonate within me. I possessed a unique ability to sense whether a being was monstrous based on its energy. My intuition had failed me once before, however—when it came to the woman. “You are correct; I am a mage—a sorcerer,” the old man confirmed, his voice heavy with authority. At the revelation, my troops flinched back in fear. Witches held a unique terror in our world, wielding god-like powers but possessing hearts dark as demons. In a swift motion, I aimed the tip of my sword at the old mage. “Then it’s not our god you worship…” I shouted before launching my attack. But before my blade could reach him, the girl with the amber eyes stepped in to block my strike. In her palm, a weapon wreathed in lightning, and flame materialized. “Chief!” my soldiers shouted in alarm, rushing to assist me. In an instant, the sorcerer unleashed a torrent of black energy, incapacitating my men one by one. “I warned you; this is the last chance I will grant you…” the woman said, her tone shifting from aggression to something almost pleading. I struggled to decipher her intentions. Her voice hinted at a deeper conflict—one that suggested she might not be my enemy after all. With determination, I pressed my attack once more, but she countered swiftly, the old mage observing with a cold detachment. “Stop this, please!” she implored, her eyes wide with desperation. “Phoebe!” the old mage shouted. “He’s not one of us! He killed all the creatures in this land… He deserves to die!” Ignoring the mage’s command, the woman seized my hand mid-strike. In one fluid motion, she wrested my sword from my grip and drove it into my back, igniting it with flames. “Excellent work, Phoebe; I never doubted you,” the mage remarked, a cruel smirk creeping across his lips. The blade’s intrusion was agonizing, and I felt it pierce my heart. “Ahhh!” I screamed in anguish, collapsing to my knees as blood spilled from my lips. Phoebe’s gaze bore into mine, filled with sorrow, as if she felt the weight of our fates. “I never imagined that your angelic face would bring about my end,” I gasped weakly. “You were meant for me… You are the twin flame of my soul. I’m taking it back, if only for a moment.” With those words, she drew me into an embrace. As our bodies collided, the sword that had pierced my heart embedded itself in hers. “No! Phoebe!!” the old mage bellowed. “This is the only way I know to save you from the monsters you’ve slain… I’m taking your cursed soul… I’m so sorry,” Phoebe stammered, her voice breaking. END OF CYRUS’ P.O.V When both of them fell, the once-yellow moon transformed into a crimson hue, resembling blood. Cyrus and Phoebe's stab wounds glowed fiercely. Red fire erupted from Phoebe while a blue flame emanated from Cyrus. For a fleeting moment, their twin flames intertwined, the red flame flowing into Cyrus’ body as his soul surged into Phoebe, accompanied by the blue flame. The vibrant orange of her hair darkened to an inky black. “Phoebe!!” the old mage cried out, frantically pulling Phoebe’s lifeless body from Cyrus’. He mourned the loss of his only child, cradling her in his arms. “Why did you do this?!” he sobbed. In a fit of rage, the crimson moon became shrouded in ominous clouds, and torrential rain began to pour. “I curse you!” he shouted, anguish fueling his words. “In the name of my child, I curse the new phoenix! For every passing century, your body shall burn with fire as a sign of my wrath, and you shall be reborn from your own ashes! I swear that your eternal life will be a torment until you beg for death!” The sorcerer’s fury unleashed a devastating deluge across the land, claiming the lives of Cyrus’ entire family and the citizens of Agnarr that fateful night.
