Walking into Ethan's mom’s house, I was marveled by it. It was a lot more impressive than Ethan's and that's understandable, after all, it was their money first before his, but what I still didn't get was why she was treating me so nice.
“ Mrs. Lisa, we'll take tea,” she instructed one of the workers the moment we got to the main living room. It was huge, elegant piece, definitely something that suited her style.
“ Yes, ma'am,” she bowed before leaving.
“ My husband is not around now which makes things all the more convenient, not that he'd say anything really, but I rather have a woman to woman time,” she said to me. We sat opposite each other - an awkward silence enveloped us.
“ Ma'am, I don't mind leaving the house at all. I really shouldn't have gotten pregnant for your son but I really did take the drugs he asked me to,” I explained myself to her.
“ Of course, I believe you,” she said. The maid served us the tea just then. “ Thank you,” she smiled.
“ You do?”
“ Yes, after all, I'm the one who planned everything,” she sipped from her tea cup.
“ What do you mean?”
“ I was the one who told Mrs. Amanda to give you that drugged wine and yes, I drugged Ethan's as well so that what happened would happen. And when you went to take the drug from Butler Brown, he gave you a regular drug without any side effects. I gambled on the slim chance that you would get pregnant,” she said.
“ But why?” Tears gathered in my eyes. Did she think this was funny? I had been blaming myself when someone was behind everything.
“ Oh, it's simple. I don't like Tracey. I never have, and you're a nice girl, so I thought you'd be perfect for my son and you are,” she said.
“ It doesn't matter if I'm perfect for him in your eyes, he doesn't love him and after this, he will probably hate me more than anyone else,” I cried.
“ But you love him, don't you?” I kept quiet at her question. “ Don't worry about whether he will accept you and your child because he will as long as I'm here. I can't have Tracey ruining my plans,” she and Tracey seemed to have bad blood.
“ You'll go back to Ethan's house,” she said in a manner which meant that it wasn't subject to argument. Who do rich people really think they are to mess with someone's life? To her, I was nothing more than a prawn in her game of chess.
*** Four months after***
Hazel's POV
I stretched out on the king sized bed I was lying on. It was morning but my body was feeling too sore and weak to stand up - the pregnancy was weighing on me. As months went by, it was getting more and more difficult to move.
“ How are you feeling this morning?” Ethan's voice came, startling me for a moment.
“ Oh my gosh, you scared me,” I clutched my chest. I had almost forgotten that his mom had made us to use one room even though he never slept here for once. He and Tracey were still in a relationship.
“ It's been months since we began sharing the same room, you should have already become accustomed to seeing me every morning,” he glared at me a bit. He talked like for all these months we actually stayed in the same room, he only comes here every morning to check up on me.
“ I'm feeling sore. My back hurts,” I complained as I sat up in bed. Just as I sat at the edge of the bed about to stand up, he walked up to me and knelt in front of me, his hands caressing my bulging stomach and as much as I knew he was doing this because of the baby, it felt good to know that he at least was responsive to my mood and feelings even if it all boiled down to the well-being of his child.
After months of watching his child grow, he had grown attached to it and was even the most excited about when I would be due. He had already decorated one of the many rooms in the mansion for our baby.
“ Do you want me to get the maids to prepare something for you? Are you craving anything in particular?” He spoke to me softly - it was rare. He kissed my belly as he spoke.
“ Maybe soup,” I sounded unsure even to myself. I didn't want to stress anyone because of my insatiable cravings.
“ Any particular one you would like?”
“ Nope, anything would work,” I said.
“ I'll let them know right away,” he said getting to his feet. Watching him leave, I realized that I loved him more and more and honestly, I hoped that giving birth to his child would create a spark between us. I knew I was wrong to think so but I loved him and I wanted him.
After taking my bath and changing into fresh clothes, I left Ethan's room and walked to the stairs only to see Tracey coming out from the other end - the direction I was headed. I walked slowly and cautiously towards the stairs, I didn't want to have to talk to her.
“ You really seem to be enjoying getting all of Ethan's attention,” she said once we were close enough.
“ I don't know what you mean,” I turned my face away and began walking down the stairs. Tracey would find the slightest opportunity to make trouble and I wasn't about to fall into her trap.
“ Of course, you do. Carrying Ethan's child and refusing to get rid of it,” she sneered and I chose to ignore. “ But you do know that he'd eventually have an attitude change once you give birth right?” She smirked.
“ All this niceness is just because of his child. If you're not healthy, then he's child's not healthy,” she continued.
“ I know that very well, you don't need to remind me,” I tried my best to keep my cool.
“ I'm just saying so you won't let all these special treatment and attention get to your head. I don't want you getting confused, you know,” she knew just how to annoy everyone.
“ Tracey, I really don't want to have to argue with you, okay?” I turned back to look at her sighing. “ I'm already stressed as it is and I don't want to add to it,” I clarified before turning back.
“ You b***h! So full of yourself just because you're pregnant for Ethan. It would be better if you and your child just go to hell!” She screamed and the next thing I felt was a hard force against my back which made me plunge forward and I went tumbling down.
I had never felt this much pain before, I wrapped my hand instinctively around my belly as I came tumbling down the stairs.
“ Hazel!” I heard Ethan scream in panic as I rested on the floor barely conscious. He ran towards me and shook me gently but I didn't respond, my eyes had began to close. “ Hazel, are you alright?” Fear spread across his now blurry face.
“ Why did you push her, Tracey?! And don't you dare lie to me because I saw you!” I could hear him scream at her.
“ It was an accident,” she lied. My fingers flinched as I tried my best to hold on to my consciousness but the pain was overwhelming.
“ Ohh, s**t! She's bleeding - I think she's losing the child. Butler Brown! Get a car ready!” I heard him yell. Picking me up and carrying me bridal style, “ Stay with me,” was the last thing I heard him say before everything finally went black.
