Moonlit Encounter
The night air carried a chill that crept into Aria’s bones as she walked along the quiet streets of the university campus. The full moon hung low and luminous in the sky, casting silver shadows across the stone pathways and flickering through the skeletal branches of the trees. Tonight felt different, the shadows deeper, alive in a way that made her pulse quicken. She pulled her cardigan tighter and told herself it was only her imagination, the stress of exams, or perhaps the old legends her grandmother used to whisper about hidden realms and creatures that walked under moonlight.
Near the edge of the campus park, she saw him. A boy standing under an ancient oak, tall and impossibly still, as though he belonged to the night itself. His dark hair fell past his shoulders and his eyes shone with a depth that unsettled her. Something about him seemed luminous, drawing the air toward him, bending it around his presence.
“Hello,” she said softly. Her voice barely disturbed the stillness.
He tilted his head, his gaze locking with hers. The world around them seemed to pause. “You shouldn’t be here. It’s not safe.”
“I… I was just walking back from the library,” she said, her heart hammering.
“You don’t belong to this night, yet something brought you here,” he said, voice smooth and low, resonating through her chest.
Aria’s eyes darted to the shadows, rippling unnaturally at the edge of the park. A hum filled the air vibrating against her ribs, and suddenly the hair on her arms stood on end.
“You feel it too,” he said, his gaze darkening. “The veil between the worlds thins tonight.”
“The veil?”
“The barrier between your world and mine,” he explained, stepping closer. “It has always existed beside yours hidden, but tonight something calls to it and something dangerous is near.”
Her stomach knotted. “And me?”
“You are special,” he said. “Not like the others who walk blindly through this world. You can see, you can feel, and that is rare.”
A spark of recognition flared in her chest. She had always sensed she was different. The shadows around them seemed to lean closer, curious. Kael extended his hand slowly, a silent invitation. “Come with me. There is not much time and you need to understand before it is too late.”
Her legs trembled, yet she reached for his hand. The moment their fingers touched, warmth surged through her, the moonlight flaring around them as if celebrating the union of their fates. The ordinary streets faded and a hidden world unfurled before her eyes. Somewhere in the distance, unseen eyes watched and the veil between worlds shivered in anticipation.
