Chapter Four: Hidden Agendas James POV The days that followed our dates were very awkward. So Emma and I decided to spend more time together, exploring the city and revisiting old haunts from our high school days. But I still can't shake off the feeling that something was off, especially after Emma mentioned Mr. and Mrs. Cater. So one evening after my date with Emma, I decided to visit my parents to find out who they are. Maybe they could shed some light on their connection to our families are. “James! I never thought you would come and say hi to mummy, how are you my love”, my mom exclaimed, embracing me with a warm hug. “I'm good, Mom. Is Dad around, I need to talk to both of you” My dad finally joined us in the living room, and we settled in for a chat. “Do you know Mr. and Mrs. Cater” I asked, trying to sound casual and relaxed. My parents exchanged glances. My mom’s face softened, but my dad’s expression grew hard. “They were friends of ours a very long time ago,” my mom began. “Why do you ask?” “I ran into someone who mentioned them. What happened to them?” My dad sighed. “They worked for me, but there were… like complications. Let’s just say they left on their own will” I pressed for more details, but my dad stopped. There seemed to be more to the story, but he wasn’t willing to share it. So I left their house with more questions than answers, determined to find out what really happened myself. Emma POV James and I had fallen into an easy rhythm, our conversations becoming more comfortable and our silences more meaningful. Yet, I couldn't forget the real reason I had come back to town. My parents’ deaths are still a mystery, and I knew the Dawsons were involved. My heart ached with the weight of my secret mission to bring down the family responsible for my parents’ demise. One fateful evening, as James and I were walking through a garden, I decided to see if I could get more information from him without revealing my true intentions. “James, I know we’ve been having a great time, but I can’t help but feel there’s something more to the Caters. I’ve been curious about the Caters lately.” He stopped in his tracks, turning to face me. “Emma, what do you mean, I don't really understand?” “What I meant is that there seems to be pieces of the past that are hidden from your family's past, and I want to understand everything better.” I made sure to keep my voice light and my expression open, hiding my true motives. James nodded, his eyes filled with concern. “Emma, I promise you that if there’s something you want to know, I will help you find out. But we need to be careful. If my family is involved, we have to tread lightly” We spent the next few days piecing together whatever information we could find. James dug through old family records while I spoke to people who had known my parents, maintaining my facade of innocent curiosity. Slowly, a picture began to form, one that pointed to a dark secret buried deep within our families’ pasts. One night, as we were going through some old documents in his office, I found a letter. It was addressed to James’s father, from Mr. Cater. The contents were cryptic, but it was clear that there had been some kind of involvement of a substantial amount of money and a threat. “ I found it, this is it James,” I said, my voice trembling with a mix of excitement and fear. “This letter proves there is more to it. We really need to find out what it is” We were on the verge of a breakthrough, but I couldn’t shake off the fear that what we found might change everything. Emma POV The discovery of the letter was a turning point. It was proof that my parents’ deaths were connected to the Dawsons. But I couldn't let James know the whole truth. My whole mission is to bring his family down, and I couldn’t risk him finding out and ending my plans. We decided to confront James’s father. It was a risky move, but I needed more information. James’s father was surprised to see us both, and even more surprised when we showed him the letter. “What is this” he demanded, his face turning pale. “It’s a letter from Mr. Cater. We found it among your old documents. We need to know what really happened”, James said firmly. Mr. Dawson seemed calm at first but later sank into his chair, looking a little defeated. “It’s not what you think guys,” he began. “The Caters were good people, but they got involved in something dangerous. I tried to help them, but things got out of control. They were being threatened, and… it led to their deaths.” His confession hung in the air, heavy with the weight of truth. “Who was threatening them” James asked, his voice barely above a whisper. Mr. Dawson looked at us, his eyes filled with regret. “A business rival. Someone who wanted to take over our company and would stop at nothing to do it.” As the pieces of the puzzle fell into place, I felt a mixture of satisfaction and sorrow. The truth is finally out, but it came with a heavy price. James POV The revelation about the Caters and my family shattered me and the truth behind their deaths was a shock, but it also brought a strange sense of closure. Emma and I had uncovered the truth, but we were left to grapple with its consequences. In the days that followed, we worked to bring the responsible parties to justice, finding solace in each other’s company. Our bond grew stronger, forged in the fire of our shared quest for truth. Later in the evening, as we sat at the corridor of my house, watching the sunset, I turned to Emma. “Emma, I have something to say" i said, looking at how she would react, and she nodded, so I continued. "I know this is not the most conventional way to start a relationship, but .… can we just forget about the past for a moment." I paused for a minute and said "Emma, Will you marry me” She looked at me, with tearful eyes. “Yes, James, I will.” As we hugged, I felt like she was the one, the only woman I would like to spend the rest of my life with, Our journey was just beginning, and with Emma by my side, I was ready for whatever came next. Emma pov What he didn't know was that my agreement to marry him was part of a plan I had kept hidden from him all along.
