Chapter Five: The Storm
James POV
Our engagement was everything I had dreamed of. Emma’s “yes” filled me with a lot of joy. Just as the news of our engagement spread like wildfire, the media went crazier and more than neither of us had anticipated.
After our engagement, I woke up the next morning to the nonstop buzzing of my phone. Dozens of messages and missed calls from friends, family, and mostly, several unknown numbers filled my phone screen.
“James, it’s your father,” one voicemail began, sounding urgent. “Call me as soon as you get this. The media is all over the news of your engagement”
Just as I was on the TV to watch the news, and there it was, right in front of the front-page article announcing our impending marriage. It was accompanied by a photo of Emma and I, taken during one of our recent outings.
"James Dawson, heir to the Dawson Enterprises, engaged to childhood friend Emma Carter," the headline blared.
I rushed to Emma’s apartment, hoping to get there before the press did. When I arrived, she was already on her phone, looking a bit devastated.
“Yes, I understand. No comments for now. Thank you,” she said, hanging up and turning to me. “James, this is crazy! How did this even get out?”
“I don’t know how, but we need to figure out our next steps. The media won’t stop now” I said, feeling a mix of frustration and concern.
Emma POV
The sudden media storm was very overwhelming. I had anticipated public interest once our relationship became official, but this was beyond anything I had ever imagined.
Reporters were camped outside my apartment building, and my phone wouldn’t stop ringing.
But I won't let my true motives slip. Marrying James is a big part of my plan to dismantle the Dawson empire from within. I have to play my part perfectly, maintaining the image of a loving fiancée.
“James, I think we should make a public statement ” I suggested. “If we don’t address this now, it will get worse. What do you think?”
James nodded. “You’re right. Let’s call a press conference. We need to take control of the narrative.”
I took his phone from his pocket and dialed a number. "David, arrange for a press conference in the next thirty minutes."

We arranged at the press conference that would be held at the Dawson Enterprises headquarters. The media gathered in full speed, cameras flashing and reporters fighting for position. Emma and I stood side by side, presenting a united front.
“ Thank you all for coming” I began. “Emma and I are happy to announce our engagement. We ask for your respect and privacy as we plan our future together.”
Emma smiled warmly, and added, “We are grateful for all the support and well-wishes. This is a very special time for us, and we hope you will respect our decision.”
The questions came very fast, but we managed to answer them politely. As the press conference ended, I felt relieved.
Emma POV
Behind closed doors, I continued to gather information on the Dawsons. The media frenzy provided a perfect cover for my activities. With everyone focused on our engagement and no one suspecting my true intentions, James’s trust was my greatest asset.
In the night, as we lay in bed, James turned to me and said, “Emma, I was just thinking like, After we get married, I want us to take a step back from all this chaos. Maybe travel, start a family, build a life away from the spotlight. What do you think my love”
His words struck a chord in me. For a moment, I allowed myself to imagine a future with James, free from the burden of what happened in the past. But I quickly reminded myself of my mission. I couldn’t let personal feelings get in the way.
“That sounds wonderful, James,” I said, forcing a smile. “I’d love that.”
As he drifted off to sleep, I stared at the ceiling, the weight of my secret pressing me down. The media storm was just the beginning. The real battle is yet to come, and I have to be ready for it.
James POV
The media attention eventually began to die down, but our lives remained under constant scrutiny.
On one fateful afternoon, while we were finalizing details with our wedding planner, I received a call from an unknown number.
“James Dawson right, I'm calling from Dayton police station and I'm Detective Harris. We need to talk.”
“Detective Harris, What’s going on,” I asked, my heart racing slowly.
“It’s about your parent. Their plane crashed last night and the plane is burned to the ground. But we've been investigating it and new evidence has come to light. Can you come down to the station?”
I was shocked for a moment and I could feel all the systems in my body shutting down, my parents are dead, how, why, where, how is this even possible? I glanced at Emma, who was busy discussing floral arrangements. “I’ll be right there in an hour” I said, hanging up and left without telling Emma anything.
Emma POV
As James left for the police station, I felt a surge of panic. What was going on? He looked pale when he was on his phone. Had my investigation been discovered?
I quickly gathered my things and made an excuse to leave. I needed to know what was happening and ensure that my plans remained intact.
James POV
When I got to the station, Detective Harris handed me a file. “We’ve uncovered some information about your parents' death" he said. “It appears your parents’ accident may have been staged by someone”
I felt a cold chill running down my spine. “What do you mean, staged?”
“There’s evidence to suggest foul play. We’re going to put more effort in this case. You don't have to be worried, please do not say anything to anybody, before we declare your parents dead” he replied.
As I left the station, my mind was in turmoil, I couldn't cry or talk, i just felt weak all of a sudden. This revelation changed everything. My parents’ deaths was no longer a tragic accident. I had to find out the truth, no matter what.
As I returned home, Emma was waiting for me, her eyes filled with concern.
“James, what’s wrong” she asked, coming to embrace me.
“My parent's plane crashed last night and there’s new evidence about my parents’ accident” I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. “It wasn’t an accident. It was staged.”
“ oh my God, James I'm so sorry, don't worry. We will find out who did this and bring them to justice”, She said, almost tearing up.
"I know my love, I know" I said , but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that there is definitely more to this whole story.
