Chapter 01
The blanket was pulled up to her chest. Her fingers held the soft fabric gently. Her eyes were closed, her breathing slow, her lips slightly open.
She looked peaceful.
“Mmm…” she moved a little, frowning softly as the morning light came through the curtains and touched her face. She turned to the other side and hugged the blanket tighter, as if it could protect her from the world.
Then..
Riiing… riiing…
Her phone vibrated endlessly on the nightstand.
Eva groaned softly. “Ugh… who’s calling this early…”
Half-asleep, she reached out blindly. Her hand tapped the table once… twice… thrice—
Finally, she grabbed the phone and brought it to her ear.
“Hello…” she mumbled, voice low, lazy, still soaked in sleep.
Suddenly…
“EVA!!!!!! THERE’S FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN!”
The voice blasted through the speaker like thunder.
Eva shot upright, sleep vanishing instantly.
“Jane?!” she gasped. “Fire? What fire? What happened?!”
“Forget questions. Meet me at our usual steakhouse… NOW!”
“Jane, wait...”
The call ended.
Silence.
Eva stared at the phone, her heart racing, confusion spinning wildly in her chest.
Then...
She sprang out of bed like a ninja.
Her oversized T-shirt hung loosely on her, the bold words across it reading Sleep Is My Boyfriend. Her hair was a complete disaster, wild, tangled, and proudly refusing to cooperate, like it had signed a contract with chaos overnight.
“No time… no time…” she muttered, rushing toward the bathroom.
She grabbed her toothbrush, squeezed toothpaste, and brushed at lightning speed. Ten seconds. Twenty. Done. A quick rinse, one splash of water to wake her soul, and she jumped straight into the shower.
Water on. Quick wash. Turn. Rinse. Out.
Forty seconds.
Legendary.
Eva dashed back into her room, moving like a woman chased by destiny itself. She grabbed the nearest clothes and threw them on at dangerous speed, only to freeze.
Something felt… wrong.
She looked down.
Her shirt was backward.
“For heaven’s sake!” she groaned, yanking it off and wearing it properly this time.
Two minutes.
Exactly two chaotic, heroic minutes.
She paused in front of the mirror, breathing lightly, studying her reflection. Hair questionable. Outfit acceptable. Face awake enough to face trouble.
“Perfect enough,” she declared with confidence.
And the very next second…
She rushed out the door.
---
She quickly flagged down a taxi, and it drove her straight to the steakhouse.
Minutes later, Eva was seated across from Jane, who was calmly munching on fried chicken and sipping her orange juice like nothing in the world had happened.
Eva stared at her in disbelief.
“Jane, seriously… what ‘fire on the mountain’? I nearly broke my leg rushing here because I thought something terrible had happened.”
Jane didn’t answer immediately. She slowly licked her fingers, wiped them with a napkin, and finally looked up at Eva with a serious face.
“My old man wants me to go on a blind date,” she said.
Eva blinked.
“What?”
“He already arranged everything,” Jane continued, sighing dramatically. “A full blind date. No escape.”
Eva leaned back in her chair, still trying to catch her breath.
“And you screamed ‘fire on the mountain’ for this?”
Jane nodded calmly and took another sip of her juice.
“Yes. Because for me… this is a disaster.”
Eva stared at her for a moment… then dropped her head on the table.
“You almost killed me for romance problems.”
Jane shrugged. “Real emergencies come in different forms.”
Eva let out a slow breath and rubbed her forehead.
“Jane… what is actually wrong with you?”
Jane shook her head lightly. “That’s not even the real reason I called you here.”
Eva lifted her head and looked straight at her, eyes narrowing.
“Then what do you mean?”
Jane leaned forward, her voice dropping, suddenly serious.
“I need you to go in my place,” she said quietly.
Eva froze.
“…Say that again.”
“Go to the blind date for me,” Jane repeated. “Just sit there, be polite, survive the dinner, and leave. You don’t have to say much. Just don’t expose me.”
Eva stared at her in shock, like she had just heard the most ridiculous thing in her life.
“You want me to attend your blind date… pretending to be you?”
Jane nodded without shame.
“Yes.”
Eva leaned back slowly, folding her arms across her chest.
“Jane, be honest… have you completely lost your mind?”
Jane quickly reached across the table and grabbed her hand.
“You’re my best friend. My partner in crime. My only hope. Please help me this one time.”
Eva slowly pulled her hand back, still staring at Jane like she was trying to understand whether this was a joke or a serious disaster.
“So… who exactly is this mystery man you’re supposed to meet?” Eva asked.
Jane shrugged, looking completely unbothered. “I have no idea. My old man didn’t tell me anything. Just said he’s ‘perfect’ and from a ‘good family.’ You know how they talk.”
Eva frowned. “You don’t know his name? His face? Nothing?”
“Nothing,” Jane said, popping the last piece of chicken into her mouth. “For all I know, he could be old, strange, boring, or worse… obsessed with long speeches about business and responsibility.”
Eva sighed, rubbing her temple. “Jane… be serious for once. Why don’t you want to go? It’s just dinner, not execution.”
Jane leaned back in her chair, her playful expression fading a little.
“Because it’s not just dinner,” she said quietly. “If I go… it becomes real. My father will push harder. Meetings, families, expectations… marriage talks. You know how my life works. Once I step in, I won’t be able to step out.”
Eva watched her closely but said nothing.
Jane looked back at her, softer now. “I’m not ready, Eva. I don’t even know what I want yet. But I do know I don’t want my life decided over one dinner with a stranger.”
Silence settled between them for a moment.
Then Eva exhaled slowly.
“And you think sending me in your place is a good idea?”
Jane immediately brightened. “A brilliant idea.”
Eva gave her a flat look.
“Jane.”
“Yes?”
“This is how people get kidnapped in movies.”
Jane burst out laughing. “Relax. It’s just a fancy rest
aurant, not a dark alley.”
Eva shook her head, but a small smile almost escaped.
“You owe me,” she muttered.
Jane grabbed her hands dramatically. “I owe you my life.”
Eva narrowed her eyes. “And if this man turns out to be a physco?”
Jane grinned. “Then run. Fast.”
Eva stared at her for two long seconds…
“…I can’t believe I’m actually considering this.”
Jane leaned closer, eyes sparkling. “So you’ll do it?”
Eva didn’t answer immediately.
But she didn’t say no either.
