The big garden was full of thousands of wolves. We had a very joyful and vibrant spring festival there. The banners of gold and red color were hanging from the stone walls which formed a part of the estate's architecture.
There were the sounds of music playing and the delicious smell of smoked meat. Leaders as well as warriors from various neighboring wolves' packs were standing in small groups; they were talking and laughing heartily.
Everyone waited for the big moment of the day. In their hands they were holding glasses of wine and smiling under the shining warmth of the sun.
In the middle of the green grass, Jax stood on the stone stage. He was a man of very few words and was always focused. So he preferred the company of wolves.
He was really attractive at that moment because he was wearing his clean white shirt and dark trousers. And suddenly, he knelt on one knee before me, like out of a romance novel.
He reached into his deep pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He flipped it open with his thumb, showing a big diamond ring that shined brightly under the sun.
The whole crowd of thousands erupted into loud shouts and claps.
The man from the first row with strong muscles waved a piece of paper at us and cried: "Marry him!".
The women clapped their hands fast, their faces bright with happy smiles. They truly thought they were watching a beautiful love story between fated mates. They thought this was the happiest day for our pack as all were under the impression that a romantic fate-bound love story was in front of them.
But I knew the dark secret hidden beneath his perfect smile. Two weeks ago my pack-mate Jax, who is now leading us, paid a cursed witch in the middle of a dark forest for his help with casting the spell that would tie a blood bond between us.
He paid her with a heavy bag of stolen pack gold to put a blood spell on me. It was a fake mate bond. The dark magic was meant to trick my mind and force my wolf to feel an artificial pull toward him.
He expected me to be completely helpless against his trap.
He expected me to run into his arms, cry tears of joy, and say yes immediately without a single question and giving my Yes in marriage.
Jax, on one knee, looked up at my face. Jax was standing with his head down and holding one finger up.
Then he spoke with a microphone that is attached to his collar: "Diana is my fated mate,” Jax said proudly, as he pushed his shoulders up showing off for every pack member.
"The heavens chose you for me. Come up here, take this ring, and become my Luna."
The crowd of wolves clapped even louder, their sounds making a roar similar to that of thunder.
I slowly and carefully made my way out of the crowd and got closer to the wooden stage that was decorated with the red roses.
I wore a dark blue dress that brushed against the green grass. It was a dark, serious color, completely different from the innocent pastels I used to wear.
I am still the most popular person in the pack and everyone who knew me smiled, nodded and said "Nice to see that you finally found your true mate!" while making way for my path as if I were a queen who is passing by.
I stepped up onto the stone stage as Jax smiled widely with his greedy and cold eyes.
He held the diamond ring up higher in the air, reaching out his other hand for my left wrist.
Instead of giving him my hand, I reached past his arm, grabbed the microphone right out of the tall metal stand and looked down at Jax. The big smile on his face slowly disappeared as he frowned up at me, completely confused by my long silence. He had been expecting his mate to be happy about the proposal but my silence has made him very uneasy.
I was still holding the black velvet box in my other hand.
Suddenly, I gathered up all the energy in my arm and flung the diamond ring right at Jax's face. The heavy velvet box hit him hard right on his nose. The ring bounced off his cheek and fell into the dirt.
"I, Diana of the Blood Moon pack, reject you, Jax," I said clearly into the microphone as I announced my words so clear that they got to everyone present and even the ones outside.
"I reject you as my mate, and I reject you as my future Alpha."
The loud cheers died instantly. The noises that had been heard so far faded quickly like they vanished in the air. Jax had completely forgotten how to get on his feet again; he lay on the floor for an awfully long time before he got up with his eyes wide with total shock.
The pack elders dropped their wine glasses, smashing them into pieces on the hard stone. Even the musicians on the side of the stage stopped playing their instruments mid-note and thousands of wolves stood like stone statues, staring at us in disbelief.
Nobody in the history of our pack had ever rejected a future Alpha so publicly.
Jax quickly regained himself from his state of disbelief as he realized he had gone public with a mistake that he would have never been proud of. It was so much that even the people in the area were talking about it. In a panic, he rushed up, his eyes darting around as he came at me almost like an animal and seized my hand very painfully.
"Diana what on earth are you doing?" he snarled with a voice that was entirely full of his anger.
He tried to speak softly so the crowd could not hear his words, but the microphone in my hand was still on. It caught every single word he said and blasted it through the speakers.
"Listen, you belong to me. The mate bond is absolute and you are a weak girl. You cannot just change your mind."
I did not move back or cry. I looked down at his ugly hand on my wrist, and then I let out a loud, mocking laugh that echoed through the entire garden.
"You say I belong to you?" I asked, my voice ringing loud for all thousands of guests to hear clearly.
"You belonged to my cousin, Ivy, long before today. You spent your entire morning in her bed, Jax. Go marry her instead."
The entire audience gasped loudly at the same time as hundreds of heads turned toward the front row of the crowd.
Ivy stood there in her bright dress, her face turning completely white like a sheet. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. She tried to step back into the crowd to hide, but the wolves around her moved away fast, leaving her standing all alone in the open.
Jax completely lost control. The inner wolf surfaced and the eyes totally blackened and turned into a pair of sharp, dangerous eyes. "Shut up!" the beast growled, and with the whole strength, he pulled my arm, trying to yank me off the stage and hide me behind walls.
"You are coming with me right now, and you will obey me!"
But, before he could pull me an inch, the sky suddenly grew completely dark.
A heavy, terrifying pressure dropped from the sky like a lead weight. The ground shook and thousands of wolves hit the ground screaming with great physical pain.
The pressure was so big and suffocating that the solid ground under the stage cracked open.
As soon as that happened, Jax's legs gave in releasing my arm. His grip broke off my wrist. Jax was still struggling to get up and his face turned red because of the lack of oxygen. He was lying face down on the dirt to a point he could not even lift his head.
The great iron gate of the mansion suddenly bowed inward. A convoy of the black armored jeeps came roaring into the premises like a swarm from hell that they broke through the entrance. Line up perfectly, in a straight formation, the cars just stopped and waited as they did the thing that was to bring the whole world to an end.
The door of the first jeep opened and a large, muscular man stepped out onto the gravel.
His long and heavy coat of black dragged over his black leather shoes as the sudden gust of wind disturbed the dark hair slightly. His blazing golden eyes caught and locked the gaze of the main character who was on the stage.
That was Zach Hamilton. The King, Alpha. I did not expect him to do that.
As a matter of fact, he did not look at the thousands of wolves kneeling in the dirt or look at the trembling pack elders who were bowing their heads.
He walked through the frozen crowd,as his presence felt like a dark, crushing storm.
He stepped up onto the stage and walked right up to me, reached down with his large hands, and lifted me easily into his powerful arms.
He pulled my body tight against his broad chest as I immediately smelled his familiar scent of cedar wood and fresh rain. My heart finally felt safe.
"I've waited long enough," Zach muttered softly, his golden eyes looking down into mine with deep warmth.
From the floor of the stage, Jax pushed himself up slightly, coughing up red blood from the heavy pressure in the air as he looked at the powerful King holding me in his arms, and his stupid pride made him foolish as he let out a desperate, angry roar.
"She is MY mate!" Jax screamed, pointing at us with a shaking, dirty hand.
"You can't just steal her from my pack!
The Alpha King stopped walking as he turned his head slowly, looking down at Jax over his shoulder. His golden eyes were shining with a deadly, terrifying light to a point, the atmosphere around us became so cold that our breaths turned into white mist.
Zach spoke just one chilling sentence with his scary, loud and final voice, "If you even think of touching my woman again, I will make sure that your entire lineage is wiped out.”
