A Missing Mate

2427 Words
Jacobs POV  When Dr. Summers told us about her wanting to be by herself we didn't think too much of it. First, we considered waiting outside her room. But we both decided to go back to the packhouse and take a shower. Lucas' mother left some of his stuff by the border, and Johnny informed border patrols to bring it back for him. Luc has a room at the packhouse for as long as he needs it. Besides, mum is going to stay outside the room of our Princess so she will not be left completely alone. After our quick shower and change of clothes, we walk down to the common dining room only to discover that we missed breakfast. We both grunt displeased. "In here boys!" Mrs. Birch holler from the kitchen and I feel like skipping like a little girl. Mrs. Birch's words are music to my ears. In the kitchen, she has two plates with pancakes, fruit, and some sandwiches. We sit together and eat in silence, savoring the taste. "What do you think?" I ask Luc. "She handled it well, I think!?"  "What if she doesn't want us? Humans are different from us, they don't feel the pull. Right?"  "We are made for her. I hope she sees that and accepts us!" He said with a shrug. "Doesn't it bother you, the not knowing? I wish I could read her mind!" "Honestly? It's killing me! All I want is to lie beside her and smell her hair, touch her soft skin…" He sighs and closes his eyes tight. "But, I feel like a creep! Knowing what I know about what happened to her, and still wanting her. And for not being able to stop staring at her!" I chuckle, I know exactly what he means. "Well, then I'm a creep too. Have you seen her lips?!"  "I have seen them!" He answers with a dreamy look. We eat and daydream about her in silence when my mum links me 'Jacob, son. Don't be worried now, okay. But Sofia is missing!' The growl escaping me makes the windows quake, and Luc jumps. Before he can ask me I run out the front door and shift midair jumping off the porch and ripping my clothes. 'Blue we need to find her!' 'I'm On it!' He barks at me. Somewhere in the background, I can hear Luc shout for me. We don't care, we run. Blue reaches the hospital in seconds and by the entrance, we catch her scent, but it's faint. And not from inside. It comes from the side of the building, in the tunnel that leads to the hospital park. Blue sprints down the sidewalk down the main road. People move out of the way as we follow her track sniffing the ground out of the village. Blue is in complete control, no one could do a better job at finding her than him, and it doesn't take long. In a clearing, our crazy girl is lying in the grass, taking a nap! The relief washed over me, and Blue hurry up to her and nudged her with his nose. She looks so pretty, with her honey hair shining in the sun. Blue licks her face, ear, and neck. And she gives out that sweet giggle that makes our legs weak. She puts her hands on his snout and gently pushes him off of her. When her eyes snap up, and she sees us, everything changes. She starts to back up on her elbows trying to get away from us. 'Blue, she doesn't know you. Let me talk to her!' I tell him. He starts to walk towards her but stops when he smells her fear and whimper. He takes a step back and gives me back control. We shift in front of her, the popping of my joint isn't painful anymore but more so uncomfortable. Blue hid in my mind, sad about her reaction. When the shift is over, I roll my shoulders and look at our mate on the ground. She is staring at me in disbelief with her mouth open, flabbergasted. I walk up to her, "I guess you didn't believe us before?" I sigh, Blue is quiet. She shakes her head, not taking her eyes off me.   "Do you believe me now?" I say, sounding more harsh than intended.  She stares through blurry eyes still on the ground. I reach out my hand to help her up but she just stares at me. "Come on, Luc, Dr. Summers, and my mum are worried about you!"  "You're really a werewolf?"  "Yes!"  "You can turn into a wolf." "Yepp!"  "You know that's impossible, right?" She tells me with a serious face. "I could show you again, but Blue isn't feeling it. He doesn't want to scare you again!" She blinks, "Blue?"  "My wolf, he is upset about scaring you just now!"  "So, he is a different person?"  "Yes." "How does that work?" She wonders. making me sigh, "Could we please talk about this back at the hospital?" I beg. But she doesn't move. "Wait here, I just need some clothes!" I tell her and turn around, but not before I see her face when she realizes I'm naked. We are not far from a guardpost, and there are always spare clothes. "Don't leave me…" she whispers "what if there are more wolves?" My heart jumped a little, and I turned to face her. She is looking at her hands instead of me.  "There is, but they wouldn't hurt you." "Hugo did, he is a wolf, isn't he?" She whispers, still looking down. She's got a point, I'll give her that! So I reached out to her again. "You could also use some new clothes!" I comment. Her cheeks turn scarlet, and I can't hear her response, but she takes my hand and hoists herself up. The sparks from touching her skin tingled sweetly and spread up my arm. I give her a squeeze and pull her with me. We walk in silence, holding hands. "Blue…" she says hesitantly "Is gorgeous!" Blue peeks up at that and I can mentally feel him wagging his tail. "He is happy to hear that!" I chuckle. "Can he hear me?" She wonders. "Of course, he is sorry he scared you earlier by the way."  We walk hand in hand through the forest quickly reaching the cabin. I pulled out a basket with some basketball shorts for me and a t-shirt for her. It's big enough to be a short dress. She pulls it over her head, then unbutton the hospital garment underneath and uses it to dry herself off before she lets it fall to the ground. She keeps on avoiding looking at me. 'Mum, can you help Luc to get us? We are at the cabin by the main road!'  'You found her! Thank the goddess, we are on our way!' "This is still crazy." She mumbles, hugging herself, standing in the forest's soft light. "Maby, but I'm crazy good-looking, right?" I joke, walking up to her, taking her in my arms, and tilting her head up to face me. She smiles but doesn't look me in the eyes. "Maby!" She answers slyly. "You are stunning!" I mumble, brushing my nose against hers. She stands on her tippy toes and reaches my ear with her lips. A shiver goes through my body when she brushes against it. "Blue," she whispers, "I'm sorry, for hurting your feeling."  Sofia's POV  I allow myself to be held by Jacob. We stand there in the soft light of the forest, quiet. "Can you explain something to me?" I mumble a little dazed by his tenderness and handsome appearance. "Maybe," he replies, absently as he fingers at a strand of my hair that has fallen out. "Do you care about me?" I ask, I need to know why he saved me, why he came after me when I snuck away like this. "Yes." "Why?" I wonder. "The goddess has chosen us for you. We are meant to be yours." He answers easily. That doesn't make any sense to me, so I stay quiet and listen to him chuckle at my confusion. "We will help you understand." He whispers and backs up, at the same time Lucas comes walking with Maggie. "Sweety, what were you thinking?" Maggie exclaimed, walking up to me and pulling me from Jacob into her arms. She hugs me and scowls at the same time. She then takes me by the hand and pulls me with her towards the road and what I expect to be the car. "You must be hungry? How could you disappear like that? Darling, you are still healing, you should let us take care of you, and the police are waiting to meet with you!" She sounds like a worried mother. I let her lead the way and keep on talking. I look over my shoulder and see Jacob and Lucas following us, they are talking silently to each other. I smile at them, and Jacob smiles back, Lucas looks serious, deep in thought while listening to Jacob. I turn back to Maggie, listening to her half-heartedly. Somehow we end up in the backseat of the car. She holds my hand and keeps on talking. About all and nothing. It's pleasant so I sit back and enjoy it. Lucas and Jacob jump in the front, and we drive back to the small town. I'm so hungry I feel dizzy, I take deep breaths and close my eyes focusing on keeping calm. When we reach the hospital I can feel the car park. My door opens, and someone, I guess Jacob, lifts me out and carries me away. I rest against his chest. I don't need to look where I'm going, it's back to my old room at the hospital. I can hear doors open and close. When he puts me down on my feet I sway and lean against his chest. He holds me, and we stand together, I lift my head to thank him. But when I look up it's Lucas standing there. Eyes closed, relaxed, and holding me. I put my hands on his chest and back up. Feeling slightly embarrassed by the mistake. He lets me go and looks at me, disappointed? "I'm sorry. I thought you were Jacob."  "I know." He sighs. I give him a smile and thank him for the help.  "I'll leave you to it." He mumbles and turns to leave the bathroom. There's a new towel in the bathroom, but the toiletry bag must be on my bed. I move slowly and carefully trying not to sway or damage my back. I take a shower and dry myself off. Again I'm loving the feeling of being so close to being clean. I walk out to the bedroom wrapped in my towel, in the search of my brush and some clothes. Jacob and Lucas sit there checking their phones but look up when I walk in. I can feel myself blushing and stop. "Um, I need clothes," I tell them. Jacob smiles and winks at me before he raises and walks up to me.  "Why?" He asks, looking at me with a mischievous smile. Making me swoon a little. What the f**k is wrong with me? I mentally slap myself for behaving like an i***t. And push him playful in his chest. It's rock hard, and he doesn't move an inch. "Why?" I laugh while repeating his question. "Because I need food, now!"  "You don't need clothes to eat!" He argues with his eyes flickering between green and black. It's mesmerizing.  "Enough!" Lucas grunts, annoyed "she needs to eat, and we need to talk to the police about River. So behave!" "River…" I mumble. Recognizing the name. The bear at the action? Arthur called the Bear River, didn't he? He bought Olivia instead of selling the bear. He said something about breeding instead of selling. Lucas and Jacob looked at me with confusion. "What?" "You met him?" Lucas breathed.  "Him? Who?" "River, my brother, have you seen him?" "No, I only met Hugo and Tobias. Except for when we went to the action. There were a lot of different people and animals there!"  "So you never met River?" Lucas says, disappointed. "Sorry, no. Arthur, who had the cage beside ours had a bear, he and Hugo kept calling it River. I came to think of him now, that's all." I explained. Lucas hazel colored eyes slowly transition to a glowing amber color. Jacobs is merely black with rage. "They put you in a cage?" Blue growls low. Making me take a step back by surprise. "Not me, the others," I mumble, moving slowly to the side towards the bed while keeping my eyes on them.  "What happened to the bear?" Lucas asks, coming closer. "Arthur was going to sell him, but he changed his mind about it. He bought Olivia instead. She came to the auction with me." I recount, remembering the loss of my sisters. Those who live and the one I failed. The bear seems as important to Lucas as my sisters to me. Jacob is a wolf, but Lucas is... a bear. Could River really be his brother? I feel so dumb, of course, it has to be. Silent tears flow down my cheeks onto my chest and the towel. "I'm sorry…" I say looking at Lucas "I'm so sorry, I didn't know!" His glowing eyes settled on me. He walks up to me and caresses the tears on my face.  "This means that the boy told the truth. We need to tell John and the investigators," Jacob growls. "Yes," Lucas answered, nodding his head, "but first, you need to change and eat honey!" He tells me still holding me and now with his hazel eyes back to normal.  Jacob contacts this John, and Lucas goes after some food. Maggie has left me new underwear, a light blue summer dress, and flats. I put it on quickly and make myself ready. Lucas comes with sandwiches, and I jump off the edge of the bed where I've been sitting waiting to go. The room spins. But Jacob catches me and lifts me back onto the bed. "Where do you think you are going?" "The police station!" "Not until you have eaten!" He says firmly. Earning him a roll of my eyes. "Open up!" Lucas chuckled while holding a sandwich towards me. Making me realize that I'm overruled and outnumbered. What the f**k!?
