Jacobs POV
Sofia has been shut down from us and the world for two days. Everything was fine until Lucas took her to the shower. And now it’s like being back in the hospital. When he told me some of what had happened I wanted to bash his head in with my fists. If it hadn’t been for Sofia being in the house I would have roared with rage making it all shake. What the f**k was he thinking? And now it’s all ruined. Lucas got her dressed after we
discovered that she stayed apathetic in her former room. When the evening came, we got worried but still, we couldn’t reach her. It’s like she couldn’t hear us or see us. All our attempts to make her eat and talk to us were for nothing. And after that, we just left her alone, thinking she would snap out of it. I haven’t been able to concentrate on my work, so I decided to work from home. I have an office, but being home doesn’t help.
After shoveling around some papers on my desk and sighing hundreds of times. I throw my hands up and let out an annoyed groan before covering my face and leaning back in my chair.
Fuck this…
When my door is swung open and Lucas rushes in I want to kill him, all over, again.
“Leave, now!” I roar, whiteout looking up.
“We need to call someone, we need to help her!” He pleads causing me to sigh again.
“I know, I know!”
“How about Mrs. Lee?”
I look up at him slowly, that’s acutely not a bad idea. She is a psychologist after all.
“Yeah, that could work!”
He nods eagerly and sits down. I glare at him before standing up to leave.
“I don’t have her number, but Sofia does!” I tell him and walk off.
The guest room feels stuffy when I walk in it. She is on the bed. Lucas has brushed her hair and tucked her in. She still just stare out into oblivion. I walk up and touch her hair, kiss her
cheek, and lean my forehead against hers.
“Come back!” I whisper, feeling better with her scent in my nose. When I let her go, I feel cold where my skin touched her, I sigh yet again and search out her phone before pulling myself together and leaving.
As the signals are heard I get nervous. What if she can’t help?
“Hello Sofia, how are you?” Mrs. Lee practically sings through the phone.
“Hi, Mrs. Lee, it's Jacob! We need your help!”
“Oh, is something the matter?”
“Yes. Sofia is, well. She isn’t feeling good.”
“Since when?” She asks now sounding worried.
“Since Sunday morning. Everything was fine, then she and Lucas had a moment and she collapsed.” I replied giving Lucas a new glare where he stands in the hall listening in.
“May I talk to Lucas?” She wonders.
“Yes!” I sigh and throw the phone over to him before focusing on not listening. Which is impossible. After hearing it all happening again Mrs. Lee tells us to walk away so Sofia can’t hear us and turn on the speaker. Down in the kitchen, we do as she said
and then put the phone on the kitchen table.
“We’re listening Mrs. Lee!”
“Please, say Monica!”
“Okay, Monica. We are listening!” I say trying super hard to not sound annoyed.
“So, the ‘action’ in the shower triggered a memory from her captivity. But you already know that! I guess PTSD would be my best description.”
“Yes, but how do we snap her out of it?”
“How did you wake her up when she was in the moment?”
I look at Lucas, only he knows the answer to this.
“I don’t know, I talked to her. Ore yelled at her!”
“Okay, so what did you say?”
“I don’t know, her name I guess. I told her to look at me!” He recalled with frustration in his voice.
“I understand that this is hard on you,
both of you! You need to understand that even if she is human, the bond between her and you exists. She needs you! And you shouldn’t be worried about trying to be intimate with her. You said that she wanted it right?” Mrs. Lee explains to us.
“So, you need to help her find ways to do that and feel safe!”
“Yes, that’s our intention. But to do that we need her to be mentally present, don’t we?” I blurt out not hiding my
anger any longer.
“Yes, that would be preferable!” Mrs. Lee state calmly, “you can wait for her, or you can try to wake her up.”
“Thank you. We’ll do that! Mrs. Lee!”
Lucas replies
“Monica, please!”
“Thank you, Monica!”
“Anytime boys!” She said and hung up.
“Well that wasn’t very helpful, was it?” Luc groans and covers his face.
“No!” I agree and sigh again. I take the
phone and mumble something about returning it. Lucas doesn’t respond but nods absently. It’s with heavy steps I walk up the
stairs to the guest room. The door is ajar and I walk in. She is where we left her and yet another sigh comes out of me. Instead of leaving the phone, I go down to my knees by her
bed. I put my hand on her head and my head on the bead. I stroke her hair slowly.
“Hi, angel! Would you please talk to us?” I beg but get nothing. Her eyes are open but she can’t see me.
“We miss you so much, baby girl!” I sob “we need you, please wake up!” With this hopeless and heavy lump in my stomach, I close my eyes. I can’t stand looking at her when she can’t see me so I have to satisfy myself by smelling her. A small hand sneaks up on my cheek and soft fingers play with my beard.
She moves close and rubs her nose against mine.
“Why are you sad?” She mumbles against my lips.
“You left us!”
“No silly, I’m right here!” she giggles making me cry with relief.
“I’m never letting him take you for a shower again!” I growl. The relief rolled off me in waves and I still haven’t opened my eyes.
“You left us…” I sob, like a stubborn child, making her giggle even more. We stay like this.
“I’m sorry, I truly am! I didn’t mean to do that. It’s just, I was back. Back in the truck, with him… The night we tried to escape, he found us and brought us back.” I keep my eyes closed and listen to her. This makes my blood boil but she can’t know that. I have also already heard this, but she doesn’t know that either. And I’m not sure if I should tell her.
“He killed Agnes. She was so tiny, her voice so light! I couldn’t save her, but I could save Mia. And I did, I did that!” Her voice is shaky but determent.
“Yes, yes you did!” I comfort, “You saved her! And we will save her again. But you can’t leave us!” I beg, opening my eyes to meet hers.
“I’m not leaving, not now when Lucas found my magic spot!” She teased with twinkling eyes making my heart skip a beat. She truly is breathtaking. And annoying! She’s been “gone” and now she is teasing me with Lucas ability’s to please her. It’s his fault she ended up like this in the first place.
“Don’t do that angel, right now I want to kill him for causing this!”
“This is not his fault, and you know it! What if it was us in the shower, you and me, have you thought of that? Don’t blame him!” With a reluctant sigh, I close my eyes at her words.
“I’ll stop hating him, eventually!” I murmur, making her laugh, music to my ears. We small talk about ordinary stuff until Lucas comes in and I stand to walk out. Despite what she said, I’m not willing to forgive him at this moment.
