“That’s right, Bertha Sturgis. She’s my grandmother,” Brad told the woman at the visitors’ reception desk.
The woman began to type. “She’s in intensive care. Um…restricted visitors for now.” She looked from her monitor to Brad, David, and Andy. “That means only one person at a time and then only for brief periods. There’s a visitors’ lounge on the floor so you can stay there and take turns visiting with her.” She then gave them the room number and directions for finding the unit Bertha was on.
“Why don’t you two go on up,” Andy said. “Since we can’t all see her, I’ll go home and get Brad’s room ready and pick up the dogs.” Jake and Jester had been staying with Ben and Janet at the Hawthorn Ridge Farm where Andy and Ted had their veterinary practice and David kept his horse.
