THE DARE ~ part one
Chapter One :(the dare part one) The night Aria Hart kissed a stranger, she thought the most dangerous thing she would lose was a stupid birthday dare. She had no idea she was about to lose her heart instead. Birthdays were overrated. At least that was Aria’s opinion as she stared at the ceiling of her bedroom on the morning of her twenty-first birthday. Sunlight filtered through the pale curtains, painting soft patterns across the walls. The digital clock on her nightstand blinked 8:03 a.m. Twenty-one. The number felt important. Life-changing. A milestone. Yet somehow she felt exactly the same. Still single. Still inexperienced. Still waiting for her life to begin. With a sigh, Aria rolled onto her side and reached for her phone. The screen immediately exploded with notifications. Happy Birthday! Happy 21st! Party tonight!!! Don’t chicken out of the dares this year. The last message came from Sophie. Aria groaned. Sophie had been her best friend since secondary school. She was loud, fearless, and constantly determined to drag Aria out of her comfort zone. Unfortunately, she usually succeeded. Another message appeared. Bring your courage tonight. Aria typed back: I hate you. Sophie’s response arrived instantly. Love you too. Aria laughed despite herself. The sound felt strange. She hadn’t laughed much recently. Not since life had become a predictable routine of work, books, and lonely evenings. It wasn’t that she disliked her life. It simply lacked excitement. Nothing unexpected ever happened to her. Nothing romantic. Nothing dramatic. Nothing worth writing about. And maybe that was the problem. Because deep down, Aria wanted more. She wanted adventure. She wanted passion. She wanted the kind of love she read about in books. The kind that made people lose sleep. The kind that changed everything. Instead, she spent most nights curled up beneath a blanket reading about fictional couples while eating ice cream. Not exactly glamorous. A knock sounded at her door. “Birthday girl?” Her father’s voice. Aria smiled immediately. “Come in.” The door opened. Daniel Hart entered carrying a tray loaded with pancakes, fruit, and a single candle. “Happy birthday, sweetheart.” Aria laughed. “You lit a candle on pancakes?” “I wanted to be creative.” “Or lazy.” “That too.” She sat up as he placed the tray in her lap. For a few moments, everything felt warm. Comfortable. Safe. Daniel wasn’t perfect. After losing Aria’s mother years ago, he had thrown himself into work. Long hours. Business trips. Endless meetings. But he loved her. She never doubted that. Even when life became lonely. Even when the house felt too quiet. Even when she wished her mother were still here. “Big plans tonight?” he asked. Aria groaned dramatically. “Sophie planned everything.” Daniel immediately winced. “Oh.” “Exactly.” “Should I be worried?” “Very.” His laughter filled the room. And for the first time that morning, Aria felt something close to excitement. Maybe tonight would be different. Maybe something unexpected would finally happen. She had no way of knowing how right she was. ⸻ By seven o’clock that evening, music shook the walls of the private event hall Sophie had rented. The place glowed with lights. People filled every corner. Laughter echoed through the room. Aria stood near the entrance adjusting the sleeve of her black dress. Nervous energy buzzed through her veins. “You look incredible.” She turned. Sophie grinned. “Stop being weird.” “I’m serious.” “You only compliment me when you’re planning something.” Sophie’s smile widened. “Maybe.” “There it is.” “The accusation.” “You deserve it.” The girls burst into laughter. Soon the rest of their friends arrived. The evening passed quickly. Music. Dancing. Photos. Cake. For the first time in months, Aria forgot how lonely she felt. She forgot the quiet house. Forgot the empty spaces in her life. Forgot everything except the joy of being surrounded by people who cared about her. Then Sophie stood on a chair. Which was never a good sign. “Attention everyone!” The room groaned collectively. Aria buried her face in her hands. “No.” Sophie’s grin became dangerous. “Oh yes.” And just like that, trouble began. ⸻ “Truth or Dare!” The chant echoed through the room. Aria immediately regretted every decision that had brought her here. She should have stayed home. Ordered pizza. Read a novel. Lived peacefully. Instead she was trapped. Surrounded by people determined to ruin her life. “Aria!” “No.” “Aria!” “No.” “Aria!” She sighed. “Fine.” Cheers erupted. The game began. And twenty minutes later, disaster arrived. Sophie’s eyes sparkled. The sparkle of someone about to commit a crime. “I dare you.” Aria narrowed her eyes. “That sentence never ends well.” “Oh, trust me.” “I’m already terrified.” Sophie pointed toward the opposite side of the room. At a man standing near the bar. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair. Powerful build. Brown eyes. The kind of man who looked as though he belonged on a magazine cover. Even from across the room, he commanded attention. Not because he was loud. Because he wasn’t. He simply had that presence. The kind people noticed. The kind people remembered. Aria’s stomach flipped unexpectedly. “Oh no.” “Oh yes.” “No.” Sophie’s grin widened. “Kiss him.” The room exploded. Aria nearly choked. “What?!” “Or drink this entire bottle.” A large bottle appeared on the table. Aria stared at it. Then at the stranger. Then back at the bottle. Her friends watched eagerly. Waiting. Anticipating. Praying for chaos. Traitors. All of them. Across the room, the stranger glanced in her direction. Their eyes met. Something strange happened inside her chest. A flutter. A spark. A feeling she couldn’t explain. For one brief moment, it felt as though the entire room disappeared. And suddenly the dare didn’t seem quite as impossible. Slowly, Aria stood. The crowd erupted. And before she could lose her nerve, she started walking toward the stranger. Toward the moment that would change everything.
