Uncherished Memories

934 Words
The day when William would give Noah information on his father Daniel would be a cold day in hell because he had nothing nice to say about a man who manipulated his emotionally damaged daughter into “saving embryos’ from being destroyed. Daniel called it “looking out for women’s rights''. This seemed like a worthy cause for young “Lily” as she was known back then to follow. Lillian didn’t know that Daniel was a polygamist that was all well and good everyone has a right to love the way they choose; killing the wives after they’d give birth to the babies. Although Lillian was an adult, a member of William’s security team that were all retired military followed Lillian just in case she got into trouble, which she couldn’t get herself out of, and he thought Daniel was trouble she couldn’t get herself out of. William proceeded to tell the officer that Lilian was off of her lithium and not in her right mind when following Daniel and his bedlam of wives. The staff member was told to tell William that Lillian was his wife and offer half a million dollars for Daniel’s trouble, but not to interrupt otherwise because it was a police investigation. He just didn’t have the patience and he had the means to bring his daughter and grandson home. When he asked about his father, Spencer, the security guard who saved them took on the role. Problems arose when Spencer’s wife developed cancer and Spencer flew home to be with her, creating quite the identity crisis for young Noah. “Where’s Dad?” He asked when his Grandfather picked him up that day. “Uncle Sam killed him, Noah”. William stated “I didn’t know I had an Uncle Sam, but I don’t think I like him very much”. m A seven-year-old Noah concluded. “I’m going to go check on Mommy, Grandpa”. “She must be sad too”, Noah replied …. “You said Mom would be better today!” “Aunt Millie’s going to kill Mommy”. A frightened Patrick looked up at Noah with tears brimming in his eyes, “Calm down Patrick:” No one is dying today.” Noah soothed. He was just waiting for the DNA to prove that the twins were his and to file for visitation. This was one of the times Noah wished Renee was awake because that would get her relatives to back off a bit, but he was starting to feel like his son that they were hoping for a miracle. When all was quiet, Patrick settled in with Penelope. Noah went to see Renee. Noah held her hand for the first time in nine \ears at her instance. “Renee, you have to wake up”. “Patrick can’t handle a funeral right now”. “He’ll have to Noah”, It was then Noah got a chill, he knew that voice like he knew his own. She appeared in a chair next to him. While her body lay motionless in bed. “I don’t understand”. Noah said “What’s to understand? I’m dead Noah “. Renee explained flatly. Noah half chuckled nervously ”I mean how’d it happen? ”. Renee put her head on the cushion of the chair. “I felt contractions while everyone was asleep”. “It began lightly snowing, but the wind picked up and I lost control of the car”. Noah shuffled in his chair .tears started to glisten. Renee reaches up to quiet him by putting her finger to his lip. “Don’t call attention to me”. “I’ve got people coming, and don’t worry about the twins”. “There-“ “Mine, I know”. Noah interrupted One last thing, Renee was trying to remember…” Don’t worry about my family”. ¨They’ll back off when the DNA comes back¨¨. Great, Noah thought now he could be accused of being a generational liar. When he was eighteen. he ran across some old newspaper articles of his biological father’s tirades and preferred his Grandfather’s lie. Noah couldn’t lie to his children, but he had to let her death play out, for now, her pulse was in the sixties, but it wouldn’t stay that way. He slept in another cot the hospital staff put in Penelope’s room feeling that if Patrick was hearing her talk that the reason was that they were twins or that they had the extra special sense he had when his mother had her first panic attack in front of Noah. If Patrick had his father’s gift, it meant he already knew about his mother, he hadn’t said anything for fear of upsetting Penelope who was finally getting better. Noah took Patrick was getting breakfast and it looked like Patrick was going to finish a full meal when they heard: “Code blue!”. “Code blue!”. “What’s going on Dr. Riley?”. Patrick inquired. “I don’t know,” Noah said Noah saw the doctors going into Renee’s room with crash carts, “Patrick stand back ok?”. Stay with Penelope?” That’s Mom”. “We need to help her”. Patrick said “She doesn’t want us to”. Noah said Patrick seemed resigned. but did what Noah asked and went to rest the next few days weren't going to be easy for anyone.
