Prologue
A lone woman walked into the city of Lournfal one day in early spring. She was wearing a scarlet dress with black lace for accents, but the cloth was torn as if she had encountered a wild beast. She didn’t seem frightened, rather, she had a calm, collected air to her. No one who saw her enter the city knew her, but no one stopped her from entering.
She walked into a small inn near the entrance of the city. This inn had a large sign outside with the image of a badger. She sat at a table near the front counter. The inn was lacking in customers.
A lady came out from behind the counter, her golden hair up in a tight bun. She walked over to the lone customer with a forced smile. She wasn’t fond of strangers, especially ones that looked like they had just had a fight.
“May I take your order?” She asked with a faint quiver to her voice. The stranger placed an order and the woman took her order to the kitchen. Her husband was the one manning the kitchen.
“This is her order, Egsan.”
“Alright, coming right up.”
The woman brought the stranger her food and a mug filled with a sweet cider. Steam was still wafting up from the food. She then asked her if that would be everything she would be needing tonight.
The stranger looked up to her with a smile on her face.
“Do you have any rooms for rent?” Her voice was soft, not at all matching her torn clothes. The woman looked surprised. Hardly anyone came to eat here, let alone asked for a room.
“There are some rooms for rent. How long will you be staying?”
“For as long as I’m in town I suppose. What is your monthly rate?” The woman did some quick math and came to an answer.
“Eight-hundred gold a month. Does that sound reasonable to you?” The stranger’s smile grew even wider.
“I’ll take it!”
