THE RUN

CHAPTER 3 Evaluna (POV) I felt my body move back and forth as if I was in a car. My neck ached like someone had punched me. I squinted my eyes to look around. ‘I am in a car!… oh God… I’m being kidnapped!’ I screamed to myself. Shuffling my legs and arms; I noticed they did not tie me up. ‘Strange, you’d think that if you’re gonna kidnap someone you’d at least tie them up, right?’ I thought. “Maybe you’re mistaken. Maybe they are trying to help you,” said the voice from inside my head again. She sounded like me but slightly different, more mature, gentle. It almost reminded me of my mom’s voice. Tears filled my eyes. I wiped them away quickly on the seat. ‘I don’t have time to be sad,’ I told myself. I surveyed my surroundings, getting a full picture of where I was. Looking around, I could see I was in the back seat by myself. There were two men in the driver’s and passenger seat. This was the first time I noticed they were talking. “We have to stop somewhere, Dax,” said the one in the passenger side “Your father said straight there, pick up the package and go straight back. I’m just following orders, Hraefn,” explained Dax “It took us a full day of nonstop driving to get there. She will wake up soon. I don’t expect her to stay covered in blood any longer than she already has been!” Replied Hraefn. ‘that was kinda sweet, I thought. before chastising myself at the utter stupidity of my brain. “Okay, okay, but you can be the one to explain it to your father… there’s a motel at the next exit. We will stay there for the night, alright,” Dax said begrudgingly ‘An exit!’ The wheels in my head started turning, and I began making the plan for my escape. ** It had been around two hours before that so-called exit came. I bided my time, pretending I was still knocked out, when the car slowed down and came to a stop. ‘NOW!’ I sat myself up and threw the door wide open, jumped out of the car, and ran. I ran as fast as I could. I felt the cold, sharp rocks cut the soles of my feet with each stride I took. The only warmth i felt was the blood oozing onto the soles as i lifted each foot. I didn’t stop. ‘Keep going,’ I told myself My lungs ached with every fridged breath I took. 'I must have cleared some distance between myself and the car.' I wasn't great at sports, but running I was always the best at. I looked behind me for a split second to see how far I had gotten and also to see if they were chasing me. When I ran into what felt like a brick wall. My body bounced and fell to the ground. I looked up to see a mocha, brown-haired man standing above me. “and where do you think you’re going, little puppy,” he chuckled I stood up and swung my fist at him. He clasped my fist in his hand easily. “You’re a feisty one, aren’t ya,” he laughed I struggled to get free while balling my free hand in a fist, ready to swing, when suddenly I felt a warm hand place atop my head. It sent electric waves through my whole body, and my body relaxed. A soothing, deep voice followed “Calm down, we will not hurt you,” With this statement, all the adrenaline left my body, and I dropped to the cold, wet ground. I felt something get draped over my shoulders before being lifted off the ground. looking up my eyes, meet deep amber eyes staring down at me. All my fears washed away, and I closed my eyes and nuzzled myself into this stranger’s chest. “Hraefn, let me. You shouldn’t be carrying her. You’ll get dirty,” exclaimed Dax “No! I will be the one to carry her! No one else is to touch her!” Hraefn growled “Understood,” Dax replied His grip on me tightened ever so slightly as he princess carried me back to the car. ‘Hraefn… what an odd name… but beautiful. Hraefn you’re so warm. I just want to stay here forever.’ Hreafn (POV) “The exits coming up. We will be at the motel in about 5 minutes,” said Dax “Good, she’s had a long day… she deserves a shower and warm bed to sleep in tonight,” I replied while turning my head to look at the young girl laying in the back seat. My heart ached ever so slightly looking at her. It must confuse her with everything that happened. I looked closer at her perfect face and saw a single tear gently fall down her cheek. My wolf whimpered quietly. “Whats going on?” I asked him “there’s something about her… I’m not sure what it is… but she affects me,” his deep voice said, ringing in my head. He sounded genuinely upset. The car came to a stop sign, and before I knew it; I heard the back door swing opened and the young girl was sprinting full tilt bare footed down the road. I turned to Dax, but before I could even say anything, he was already out of the car running after her; I followed quickly behind. It didn’t take Dax long to sprint ahead of her to block the way. Waiting for the perfect opportunity to stop her. It came quickly. She looked back for just a split second. It was at this moment that Dax jumped in front of the silver girl. She bounced slightly and fell to the ground; she wasn’t down long before she was on her feet with her fist swinging. “She’s quite the fighter,” I chuckled to myself. I liked that. A girl with spirit. I reached them both quickly and placed my hand on her head, feeling her soft silver hair entangle my fingers; it sent sparks throughout my body. “Calm down, we won’t hurt you,” I said as gently as I could, hoping she would understand that we truly meant no harm. She went limp as she fell to her knees. I took my coat off and draped it gently over her shoulders. In one effortless swoop, I cradled her in my arms. Looking down at her, our eyes met again. They entranced me. Before I could look away, her eyes closed, and she nuzzled herself into my chest. My heart skipped a beat, and my wolf moaned. It aroused him. I shook my head slightly, trying to get rid of the suggestive thoughts he was flashing in my head. “She’s sixteen!” I told my wolf “We’re not much older. We only just turned eighteen … and I can’t help it … she smells like she has almost come of age,” my wolf grunted. I leaned down slightly and took a quick but heavy sniff. He was right. Her wildflower smell was slightly different. It had a mature aroma to it. She smelt incredibly alluring. I felt my eyes darken, and my canines grew. “STOP!” I yelled to my wolf. He was stubborn, but he backed down, and my eyes lightened. “Hreafn, let me… you shouldn’t be carrying her, you’ll get dirty,” said Dax I felt my blood boil at the thought of another man touching her. My teeth were baring, and my eyes darkened as I shot my head around to where Dax was standing. “NO! I will be the one to carry her. No one else is to touch her!” I growled Dax took a step back and bowed his head in compliance before saying, “Understood,” I tightened my grip around her as if I was afraid she would try to run away again. She was so small, but she fit perfectly in my arms. It didn’t take us long to get back to the car. I placed her gently in the back seat, pulling the seat belt around her and clicking it in place. I tilted my head and realized just how close I was to her face. I felt my cheeks and ears flush as my eyes darted down, staring at her beautiful plump lips. They looked so inviting. ‘I want to kiss her,’ I said again and again in my head. Without my permission, my body was moving forward closer and closer towards them…. It took all the strength I had to stop myself. Pulling back, I felt a small hand place itself on my arm. Dropping my head, I saw her staring at me, her eyes filled with sorrow. Her lips parted, and she spoke. “please don’t go … I don’t want to be alone,” Her voice was angelic, like a beautiful melody in my ears. My wolf whimpered in excitement. I smiled softly and nodded, closing the car door; and walked myself around the back of the car, and hopped in the back seat next to her. “Thank you,” she said with a slight smile. I placed my hand on the seat next to me, trying to get comfortable, when I felt a small tingle from my pinky finger. To my pleasure, I saw her small white hand softly grasping it. I looked up and saw her staring out the car window with my coat swallowing her petite body. I wished the motel was further away so I could spend more time with our hands touching. I knew that was selfish of me to think. She had a horrifying day, and all she truly needs right now is a hot shower and rest. I knew she would have questions for me. I’m not the one who could answer then, though. I had my own fare share of questions for my father, too. “who is this girl?…. why is she so important?...who wanted her so badly they killed her own mother?” My father had a lot to answer when we got back. We came to a final stop as a fluorescent red light filled the car. We made it to the motel.
