THE SILVER LUNA
THE DARKNESS
CHAPTER 1
I was sixteen years old when my entire world came crashing down. I remember it so vividly ....
It was a cool autumn morning. The sun was high in the sky, melting away the frost covering the grass. The fall leaves were dancing in the wind while the little birds were singing their merry little tune. When my alarm screeched its most annoying noise. I groaned and out stretched my arms, searching for the button ‘click’. The screeching stopped, and there was silence except for the chirping of the birds.
I lay on my bed, closing my eyes, beginning to drift off when a gentle voice came from outside the door,
“Evie...love, it’s time to wake up,” the voice belonged to my mom
I let out a loud, obnoxious yawn as my way of telling her I was awake. She chuckled as I heard her footsteps fade. I sat up and out stretched my arms, rubbed the sleep from my eyes, rolled out of bed, and dragged my feet to the door. With one quick sigh, I opened the door, ready to start my day.
It wasn’t a big place where I lived; it was just me and my mom, so we didn’t really need much room. The kitchen was just down the hall from my bedroom; it was an open concept, so the kitchen was attached to a tiny dining room that had a small round wooden table with 2 chairs. On top of the table was a vase with the flower of the week placed inside. This week, it was a white rose. Across from the dining room was our living room, which had a petite grey sectional couch placed on top of a white patterned rug. A TV was attached to the opposite wall with an electric fireplace underneath it. There were pictures of the two of us and all our adventures hanging on the walls. We traveled, ALOT. We never stayed in one place for more than a couple of years. I slumped myself into the dining chair nearest the kitchen and sniffed the air.
“mmmm I smell chocolate pancakes!... what’s the special occasion, Mama?” I asked half jokingly.
she usually only made chocolate chip pancakes when something major would happen, like Christmas birthdays, etc ....
“it’s a peace offering,” she chuckled
My mum was a beautiful woman, tho not very tall. She had a thin figure, pale, smooth skin that looked almost as white as the moon. I inherited the same skin. Her big round eyes, a deep sapphire blue, sat on top of her slender nose and thin rose pink lips. Her hair, another part of my mom that I inherited, was beautiful silver locks that fell down to her waist. She always dressed nicely. Today was no exception. She adored a beautiful lilac silk blouse tucked neatly into a pair of high wasted white dress pants that flared ever so slightly at the bottom.
“A peace offering? ..... what for?” I asked, confused
She turned back to the stove and flipped the pancake, rubbing her neck, and winced. She did that a lot, ever since I could remember. I looked around to see if there was anything that could give me clues to what was going on; it was then that I saw a hand-written letter half opened. I recognized the handwriting. I’d seen it many times before. I read the first sentence.
My dearest, I hope this letter finds you quickly, my love. You must hurry, you are not
My mother’s hand fell lightly onto the letter, and she picked it up and placed it in her handbag
‘Damn’
I tapped the table rhythmically with my fingers before finally saying,
“We’re moving again aren’t we” I didn’t ask it like a question because I already knew the answer, my mom replied anyway
“Yes my love, we are”
“When?” I asked
“Tomorrow, I already have most of the clothes packed. All that needs to be done are the picture frames which will be packed up tonight before bed,” she answered sweetly
“Where are we moving to this time, France...England....Turkey... oooo Japan again?” I asked slightly enthusiastically.
“Not this time... this time we’re going north ..... we’re going home...”
Home? That made little sense to me. I never really had a place I called home. My mom is my home. But up north did sound interesting.
“ Up north, huh? Will it be cold?” I sarcastically asked.
But it fell on deaf ears. My mom was rigid, her head slightly c****d to the side like she was trying to listen for something. In a split second, her face filled with terror. Before I knew it, she grabbed me by the arm and was dragging me down the hallway to her room. I didn’t protest. She threw me into her walk-in closet and pointed to the ceiling. I looked up and saw a small door; I nodded, understanding what she wanted me to do. I climbed as fast as I could, using the shelves as step stools. Pushed open the little door and squeezed myself through and looked down, waiting for my mom to follow me. She shook her head, gave me a sweet smile, and quietly mouthed.
“I love you, my little pup”
Tears filled my eyes as I opened my mouth to talk. She pressed her finger to her lips as a gesture for me to stay quiet. The little door closed, and I heard a small click. The darkness engulfed me like a heavy wave. The silence was deafening.
It felt like hours had passed but it was probably only a couple of minutes when I heard muffled voices, I couldn’t really make out what they were saying but I know there was three, my moms and two men, or at least that’s what it sounded like. The voices got closer and louder. I could make out what they were saying.
‘they must be in the hallway now just outside my mom’s bedroom,’
“Where is it!?.... we know you have it!” snarled a deep voice
“I already told you! It’s not here! It never came back last night! I don’t know where it is!” My mom sounded like she was growling. I have never heard her sound like that. She was always so gentle and soothing, even when angry at me.
“There are many things you are, Selene, but a good liar isn’t one of them” this voice was a lot calmer than the other one. Sounded more authoritative, like he was the boss or something like that. He knew my mom’s name. That was so strange to me. My mom didn’t really talk to or about anyone. Other than the person who sent all those letters throughout the years.
‘Maybe it was him.’ I thought, but the thought didn’t stay long.
These men sounded cruel. Whoever was sending those letters to my mom was always so loving and sweet. It wasn’t him. My heart jumped as I heard the door crash open.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING!” my mom yelled
“We know you’re hiding it. It’s just a matter of where, now dear Selene, please move aside so we can continue our search,” said the calmer voice
“You’ll have to kill me first, Henry,” my mom threatened
“Gladly,” chuckled the deeper voice
I heard some strange cracking, almost like bones were breaking, then growls took over the house. It wasn’t long before I was hearing crashing and banging; I knew a fight had broken out. It felt like the walls were shaking. I could hear scratches crashing and huge thuds. Now and then, I could hear a whimper, like a dog being hurt, which was odd to me, but I thought little on it. I wanted to jump down to help my mom, but she locked the door from the outside. I couldn’t get out, no matter how hard I tried. There was a huge growl followed by a screeching howl and a final thud. The bone breaking noise came back, followed by a deep voice that sounded very breathless.
“Well ... she was... tougher than I thought. Put up one hell of a fight for an omega,”
‘Omega?’ I thought, confused.
“You really are a hot-headed i***t,” snarled the one called Henry
“She asked for it. Besides its collateral damage, the boss will understand,” the other said smugly.
“For your life you’d better hope so, now get sniffing, it’s in here somewhere I can feel it!” Henry ordered
There was a small part of my heart that hoped my mom was just knocked out, but I couldn’t mistake the metallic smell that filled the air. I knew what it was; it was blood and a lot of it. I felt the warm tears fall down my cheeks as I held my hands over my mouth, trying to stay quiet.
“Have you found anything yet?” Asked Henry
“No!” bellowed the other voice
I could hear them trashing the place, throwing furniture around, and ripping doors off their hinges.
What were they searching for? I asked myself. We were not rich, didn’t have any jewels or anything expensive to steal. My heart sank as I realized they weren’t searching for something.... they were searching for someone... … me!
I heard the door to the closet open; I shook uncontrollably, hoping by some miracle they didn’t find me.
*sniff, sniff, sniff
"Did you find something?" Henery excitedly asked.
"I'm not sure.... it's very faint .... but there is a different scent in this closet," the deeper voice said between sniffs
Scent? He could smell me?... I mean, I know I haven't had a shower yet today, but I didn't think he could smell me from all the way down there. The sniffing started sounding louder, and I heard some creaking just below me. He was getting closer. My breaths became Shakey. As I tried to remain calm, I heard a small scratch right underneath me.
"Found ya," whispered the deep voice
This is it. I'm dead for sure, I thought. My body ignored my pleas to stay still; the tears were now like waterfalls. I couldn't stop them from falling. I don't want to die; I don't want to die; I kept repeating in my head. Please oh please someone, someone help me. I pleaded to any God that would listen.
Hurried feet entered the room.
"WE GOT TO GO!” yelled Henry
"But I think I found it," snarled deep voice
"Unless you want your head ripped off, we got to go ... NOW!" demanded Henry
Deep voice let out a growl. I heard a small thud. He was leaving? Why?
"You were lucky this time, pup, but I will be back, and I will find you. You will be mine! I promise you that," snarled deep voice before the door to the closet slammed shut, and both men ran out of the house.
Relief washed over me. Before I knew it, the darkness somehow became darker, and the sounds of the outside world faded away...
