1 THE MAN WHO MADE THE ROOM FALL SILENT
The night was supposed to belong to the elites. Instead, it belonged to him. Crystal chandeliers illuminated the enormous ballroom, scattering fragments of light across walls decorated with priceless artwork and polished crystal. Every table was covered in white silk. Every glass carried something expensive. Every person in the room wore a name powerful enough to open doors that ordinary people could only dream of approaching. This was not simply a party. It was the annual gathering of the city's most influential families. Business tycoons. Political figures. Heirs. Socialites. People who had inherited fortunes large enough to last generations. And, of course, the reporters who followed them everywhere. Camera flashes erupted from every corner. "Move!" "Hey, you're blocking my shot!" "Get the daughter of the Harrington family!" "No, forget her! Look toward the entrance!" The reporters were already preparing tomorrow's headlines. The magazine Darkest Secrets had built its reputation by exposing the lives of the wealthy. And tonight promised plenty of material. A famous heir had arrived with a woman nobody recognized. Two rival families were pretending to be friendly. A business magnate had been seen arguing with his own son. The gossip practically wrote itself. But then— Tap. One footstep. The nearest conversation stopped. Tap. Another. Slow. Measured. Unhurried. Heads began turning toward the entrance. The music continued for another few seconds before even the musicians noticed the change in the room. The ballroom gradually fell silent. Someone whispered, "Who's coming?" Nobody answered. The massive doors slowly opened. A man stepped inside. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then— FLASH! FLASH! FLASH! The photographers erupted. Cameras clicked rapidly as reporters pushed forward. "Sir!" "Who are you?" "Can we get a statement?" "Are you here representing the—" The man didn't answer. He simply walked forward. His black suit was perfectly fitted, without a single unnecessary detail. His expression remained calm, almost indifferent. He didn't look around as though searching for someone. He didn't smile at the cameras. He didn't acknowledge the people staring at him. He simply walked. And somehow, that made everyone stare even harder. Whispers spread through the ballroom. "He's incredibly handsome." "Who is he?" "I've never seen him at one of these events." "Wait... I think that's Lucian." "Lucian who?" "Lucian Vale." The name traveled through the crowd. A few older guests immediately exchanged looks. That surname meant something. Something important. But before anyone could ask another question, Lucian reached an empty table away from the center of the ballroom and sat down. A waiter hurried over. "Good evening, sir. What may I get you?" "Whiskey." "Right away." Lucian leaned back. The crowd gradually returned to its conversations. But their attention remained on him. He knew. He simply didn't care. Tonight wasn't about making an impression. He had come because there was something he needed to confirm. Something that had been bothering him for months. His fingers lightly tapped against the table. Once. Twice. Then stopped. His eyes moved toward the entrance. Nothing. Not yet. A voice suddenly interrupted his thoughts. "Mind if I join you?" Lucian didn't look up. A few seconds passed. He continued watching the waiter approach with his drink. The woman standing beside his table waited. She wasn't accustomed to being ignored. "Mind if I join you, handsome?" This time, Lucian looked up. The woman smiled. She was wearing a silver silk dress that shimmered beneath the chandelier lights. A black glittering mask covered part of her face, leaving only her eyes and lips clearly visible. She looked confident. Very confident. The kind of confidence that came from knowing exactly how much attention she attracted whenever she entered a room. Lucian studied her for a moment. Then he looked at the chair. "Sure." She smiled. But before she could sit— "Unless you're planning to say something cliché." Her smile froze. For the briefest moment, irritation flashed through her eyes. Then it disappeared. She pulled out the chair. "You're rude." "So I've been told." She sat. "I'm Anastasia." Lucian took his drink from the waiter. "Lucian." She already knew. Everyone in the room seemed to know. But hearing his voice say it made her smile. "Lucian..." She repeated his name slowly. "Nice name." "I've had it for a while." She laughed. "You always this difficult?" "Usually." Anastasia crossed her legs. Her eyes moved over his suit, his watch and the glass in his hand. She was subtle. Or at least she thought she was. Lucian noticed everything. The expensive jewelry. The designer dress. The way she kept glancing at his watch. The questions she hadn't asked yet. He had met her type many times. People who didn't see a person when they saw wealth. They saw opportunity. Anastasia leaned closer. "So, Lucian..." "Yes?" "Are you here alone?" "Apparently." She smiled. "That's unfortunate." "Why?" "Because a man like you shouldn't be sitting alone at a party." Lucian took a slow sip. "Why not?" "Because someone might steal you." He looked at her. "Are you volunteering?" Her smile widened. "Maybe." Lucian almost laughed. Almost. Anastasia lifted her hand toward him. "You know..." She turned her wrist elegantly. "You haven't even complimented me." "Do you need compliments?" "Everyone needs compliments." "I don't." She stared at him. Then laughed softly. "You're really something." Lucian said nothing. Anastasia's eyes narrowed playfully. "You're not going to kiss my hand?" He looked at her extended hand. Then back at her. "Do you want me to?" "Can you?" For the first time, something changed in Lucian's expression. A faint smile. He leaned slightly forward. Anastasia waited. But instead of kissing her hand, he said quietly, "Not here." Her eyebrows lifted. "Why?" He glanced toward the photographers. "Too many cameras." She followed his gaze. "Oh." She understood. At least, she thought she did. Lucian leaned back. "If you're interested in continuing this conversation, we should go somewhere quieter." Anastasia smiled. She had expected him to be difficult. But not this easy. At least, that's what she believed. "Okay, Lucy." Lucian's eyebrow rose. "Lucy?" She laughed. "Lucian sounds too serious." "You've known me for less than five minutes." "And already I've given you a nickname." "That's unfortunate." She laughed again. But behind her smile, her thoughts were elsewhere. He's definitely wealthy. Very wealthy. She had seen enough men at these gatherings to recognize the difference between someone pretending to have money and someone who had never needed to worry about it. Lucian belonged to the second category. And men like him were exactly the men she knew how to handle. She took another sip of her drink. This might be easier than I expected. Across from her, Lucian watched silently. He had already reached his own conclusion. She's not interested in me. She's interested in what I have. He wasn't offended. He was amused. People had approached him for countless reasons. Money. Power. Connections. His family name. Anastasia wasn't special. At least, not yet. He slowly stood. "Come." She looked up. "Where?" "You wanted to join me." A smile spread across her face. "Lead the way." Lucian turned. They took only a few steps before a voice suddenly called from behind them. "Lucian!" He stopped. The entire ballroom seemed to notice. An elderly man stood near the center of the room. His expression was unusually serious. "Your father is looking for you." Lucian's face changed. Only slightly. But Anastasia noticed. The amusement disappeared from his eyes. "What does he want?" The old man hesitated. "He said it's urgent." Lucian stared at him. "Did he say why?" The man shook his head. "No." For a moment, Lucian said nothing. Then his gaze shifted toward the entrance. His earlier suspicion returned. Something was wrong. Very wrong. He turned toward Anastasia. "I have to go." Her smile faded. "Now?" "Now." "But you just said—" "I know." He stepped away. Anastasia watched him disappear into the crowd. She stood there, confused. For the first time that evening, she wasn't thinking about his money. She was wondering what could possibly make a man like Lucian look so serious. Then she noticed something. A small envelope had fallen from his coat. It lay on the floor beside the table. Anastasia bent down and picked it up. There was no name on it. No address. Only one sentence written across the front. Her eyes widened. YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT SEVEN YEARS AGO. Anastasia slowly looked toward the direction Lucian had gone. The ballroom suddenly felt much colder. She looked back at the envelope. Whatever Lucian Vale was hiding... It had nothing to do with tonight's party. And somehow— she had just stepped into it. TO BE CONTINUED...
