CHAPTER THREEThe second day’s racing followed much the same course as the first with the coaches taking the party to the course and the horses being, if anything, more spectacular than on the previous day. That also applied to the ladies’ clothes, for their bustles seemed to grow in size, their bonnets and hats to be more profusely trimmed and their faces seemed even lovelier. The Duke naturally was interested in the horses and, because this kept him away from the box for so long, Fenella was pouting when he returned. When he sat down beside her, she touched him with her hands and looked at him in a manner that he thought was indiscreet.
