The Duke stopped deliberately in her path. “Am I to expect bad news or good?” he asked in a tone of somebody patronising a young child. She looked up at him and there was just a faint smile on her lips as she replied, “I am sure, Your Grace, that it would spoil your enjoyment during the race if you knew what would be the conclusion.” “What you are really saying,” the Duke replied almost aggressively, “is that you don’t know and therefore will not speculate.” She looked at him in a manner that told him she was amused by what he was saying and understood that what had happened the previous day had made him slightly apprehensive.
