Chapter 1 - Intruder
Soft shades of sunlight had begun to creep through the curtains, painting faint golden stripes across the marble countertop. The kitchen was quiet, too quiet that all you can hear is the sound of the knife piercing through the vegetables that a man in his mid 40s is chopping. He looks younger than he actually is, his body may look a bit slim but his muscles are intact, as if trying to break his sleeves.
It was a peaceful morning, a bird chirping from the outside, the soft hum of the coffee maker creates, the knife touching the chopping board, every sound was familiar-until a faint shuffle came from the living room.
The man froze.
He knew it was not the wind. Not the house settling. But someone else was here.
He didn't panic. Not yet. Not when his daughter Liana is still asleep in her room. He moved silently, each step calculated, each breath is controlled. Then a shadow flickered across the doorway.
He was already behind the man in black before the intruder even realized he was there. One hand clamped over the man’s mouth, the other twisting his wrist with brutal precision. A muffled grunt escaped before the man collapsed to the floor.
But there was another. The second intruder lunged forward, knife flashing in the dim light.
The man reacted instantly, catching the attacker’s wrist mid-swing, twisting it sharply until a crack echoed. He shoved him against the counter. Bowls rattled, teetering-
He caught them. Silence mattered. Too much noise, and Liana would wake. But the hesitation cost him. The intruder struck again.
This time, he let the bowls fall. Ceramic shattered across the floor as he drove his knee into the man’s stomach. A pained groan filled the room before the intruder crumpled.
The kitchen fell silent once more. Both men lay on the floor, barely conscious. He stood still, listening. Seconds passed and nothing.
Good. Liana was still asleep.
He crouched and retrieved a pair of handcuffs from beneath the counter, securing one intruder’s left wrist to the other’s right.
“Stay quiet,” he whispered coldly. “Or you won’t make it through the trip awake.”
He dragged them to their feet and forced them toward the garage. Moments later, the car engine roared to life. The gates slid open automatically. And just like that, he drove off,
leaving his daughter behind in a house, eager to know what's happening.
"A leak." A man in black suit grim. "They learned about your life outside your work. You're our biggest asset, now they want to put you down."
"How come?" He asked.
"This one is big, Liam. He ain't just the usual Bad guy we fight who can be easily put down, his connection is wide." He sipped in his coffee with his eyebrows furrowed.
"I know you know what I hate about this job. Once she gets hurt, I don't know how dangerous I can be." Liam's eyes darkened at the taught of her daughter hurting because of his job. He already lost his queen before, he can't afford to lose his princess now.
"I know that you already know what you should do to protect her and you shall do it now."
Liam stood up, immediately dialing the person he trusts the most to ask for help.
"Hey, what's up?" said the guy on the other line.
"The enemy infiltrated my identity." he simply said but you can hear a hint of disturbance in his deep voice.
"Is this about Liana?" he asked.
"She's in our house, take her with you in your mansion. Protect her at all cost. I'll finish this danger first then I'll bring her home again."
"You can count on me. I'll fetch her now."
After the talk, Liam somehow felt a sense of relief. He knows that he can trust him. He can now move and work freely to put down this big man his boss is talking about without getting worried about his princess.
Back in their house, Liana struggles to open her eyes as the sunlight shine directly through her window. She get up, planning to leave her room.
"Dad?" She called but no one answered her. She went to the kitchen where she usually sees his dad, preparing their breakfast. But no one is there. Instead, the messy kitchen surprised her. The chairs are not aligned properly, at the top of the counter top is the ingredients and vegetables that were spilled, and in the floor are brokern bowls where she thinks the vegetables came from.
"Dad?" She called again but this time, with her face and tone scared.
Suddenly, her phone rang. Her face lightened up a bit when she saw her father's name.
"Dad, are you okay? What happened?" she immediately asked after answering the call.
"Easy, my princess. Listen, I'm okay." His voice softened.
"I have some problems to sort out. I won't be going home for a while for your safety. After a few minutes, someone will fetch you there." Liana's eyebrows met after hearing the set up.
What is happening?
She asked again in her mind.
"What are you talking about, dad? Who will fetch me?"
"Your Uncle Darius. Stay with him for months while I'm away. I'm just going to finish this then I'll take you home again." Her jaw dropped unbelievably at the news with her eyes wide open.
"I-I'm going to stay with uncle Darius?" She stuttered. Battling inside her head is the thought,
"Is this a good news? or a bad one?"
She's going to stay in Darius house, her Dad's best friend, her first love since senior high school.
How Can I resist this feeling now? she can't help but ask. But in the back of her mind is a thought that gives her tickles in her stomach.
Maybe this is her chance to make him fall in love with her too.
Or is this just the universe's way of slapping Liana with the truth that they can never be together.
"Ahhhh! Oh My God!" a car horn roared loudly outside their house, making her scream in surprise.
I-Is that Darius?
