I was never one to be into parties or large crowds but when my best friend Annie asked me to accompany her to one of the largest parties of the year I couldn't turn it down. You had to really be someone in order to get invited to Alpha Caldwells birthday party.
I finished curling the last strand of my hair and admired myself in the mirror. My long black hair hung curled loosely to my hips i did a smokey eye with red lipstick and my favorite red dress that showed off my long legs from my 5'9 frame.
The car horn beeped from outside and i slid on my red pumps and hurried down the stairs. Outside Annie was waiting for me a Marlboro between her lips and a smirk on her face "someones trying to look good for the alpha" she giggled.
I rolled my eyes and slid into the car "its highly unlikely we will see him anyways" she shrugged "its his birthday party you never know i mean hes busy but i doubt hes too busy to show up to his own party" i nodded in agreement.
We pulled into the driveway of the caldwell pack an hour later the music was booming there were people everywhere and the atmosphere felt heavy. Me and annie got out together and headed towards the front door.
The second we stepped through the front door, the noise swallowed us whole.
Music rattled the walls, glasses clinked together, and bodies filled almost every inch of the massive living room. The Caldwell Pack knew how to throw a party.
Annie grabbed my wrist before I could take another step. “Okay,” she said, looking around. “This is definitely better than sitting at home watching trashy reality TV.”
I laughed. “You only agreed to come because you heard there would be free alcohol.” she paused “That too.”
We made our way through the crowd, stopping every few feet to say hello to someone Annie knew. I was halfway through listening to her complain about someone from the pack when I felt eyes on me. I glanced over. A guy leaning against the kitchen counter was staring directly at me.
He was tall, broad-shouldered, and had a crooked grin that made it obvious he knew exactly what he was doing. When our eyes met, he raised his glass. I looked away. Annie immediately noticed. “Oh, girl.” I raised an eyebrow “What?”
“You have an admirer.” I sighed “I noticed.” She grinned around her cigarette. “And?” I shook my head “And nothing.” she smirked “Liar.”
Before I could answer, the guy pushed away from the counter and walked toward us. “Well, hello.” Annie looked at me, then at him.
“Hi,” I replied. His eyes traveled over me before returning to my face. “I'm Mason.” I nodded “Catelyn.”
he smirked “I know.” I raised an eyebrow. He chuckled. “Everyone knows Catelyn Haloway.”
“Do they?” I questioned with an eye roll “Pretty sure half the room noticed you walk in.” I couldn't help but smile. Annie nudged my arm. Mason leaned closer so I could hear him over the music. “Can I buy you a drink?” I shook my head “I can buy my own.”
His grin widened. “I like you already.”
“That's unfortunate.”
Annie burst out laughing.
Mason shook his head. “Damn. She bites.”
“Only when people annoy me.” he raised an eyebrow “Then I'll try not to.” we spoke for a few more minutes before he disappeared toward the bar, leaving me staring after him.
Annie immediately grabbed my arm. “You're getting flirted with.”
“I noticed.” she smirked “And you liked it.” I glared “I did not.”
“You smiled.” I shrugged “I smile at everyone.” she rolled her eyes “No, you don't.” Before I could argue, another voice came from behind us. “Catelyn?” I turned around. A familiar face stood there—Evan, one of the younger members of the pack. I'd seen him around plenty of times but never really spoken to him.
He looked me up and down with an amused expression. “Wow.” I crossed my arms. “What?”
He chuckled “You clean up nice.” Annie snorted. I rolled my eyes. “Thanks, I think.”
“No, seriously.” He stepped closer. “I don't think I've ever seen you wear red before.” I shrugged “Maybe you've never been paying attention.”
“Maybe I should start.” I laughed despite myself.
Annie leaned toward me. “I'm going to get another drink before this turns into a competition.”
“You're leaving me?”
“Absolutely.”
She disappeared into the crowd before I could stop her. I sighed. Evan smiled.
“Guess it's just you and me now.” I rolled my eyes with a small laugh “Don't get too excited.” He laughed. “You always this difficult?”
“Only with guys who think they're charming.” he smirked “And if I actually am charming?” I smiled “I'll let you know.” He smiled at me for a moment before holding out his hand. “Dance with me.”
I glanced toward the dance floor. “I don't dance.”
“Everyone dances.”
“I don't.” I protested “Five minutes.” I hesitated. Then I heard Annie yelling my name from somewhere across the room. I turned toward the sound. She was standing at the bar, pointing at me with the biggest grin on her face.
Traitor. I looked back at Evan.“Fine. Five minutes.”
His smile widened.“Deal.”
He led me toward the dance floor, and for the first time that night, I let myself forget why we'd actually come.
The party. The alcohol. The music. The attention. And the fact that somewhere in this enormous house was the man everyone had come to celebrate. Derek Caldwell.
I hadn't met him. I hadn't even seen him.And honestly I wasn't sure I cared. It was obvious not everyone would see the alpha and I was just fine being one of the ones that didn't.
