And Kira didn't hesitate. And immediately dialed her mom's number, her heart racing with anticipation, but this time it was driven by hope, not fear. As soon as her mom answered, Kira's voice was stronger, more resolute, "Mom, get ready, you're going to the hospital, I've taken care of everything.”
There was silence on the other end—then a long, shaky breath. “Thank you, Kira…” her mother whispered. “ I knew you wouldn’t disappoint me.”
Kira's eyes fluttered closed for a moment, and a wave of relief swept through her, calming her nerves.
“I'll see you later, okay? Just go.”
As she quickly ended the conversation, the phone slipped from her fingers and landed with a soft thud on the desk in front of her, then she started flipping through the pages of the documents, scanning through, matching the records on the computer.
Fingers move fast across documents and the keyboard as she pays close attention to the details on the computer and also on the document. Suddenly, the office door opened, as Adrian stepped out. Kira didn’t notice at first, “I’m leaving,” he said.
Her hands paused, as she looked up with a faint smile. “Make sure everything is done.” His tone was flat. Final. “When you’re done, security will show you out.” Everyone stood still as he turned around and started walking away, with his bodyguards closely following behind him.
The office slowly emptied, one by one, people left. The lights dimmed, everywhere became very quiet.
Until it was just Kira and the files. Meanwhile, at home, her mom is lying weakly on the couch waiting for Kira to come home. She had never taken this long, Kira's mom said, what could possibly be the problem? She called Kira's phone, but her number went dead.
Kira was completely absorbed in her work, and everything else just faded into the background. She sat there, staring at the screen, her fingers moving across the keyboard with ease. It was like she was in her own little world, where everything made sense and time
stood still.
