Chapter 14

Hours passed, but to her, it felt like just the blink of an eye. Kira was so into what she was doing that time just flew by, and before she knew it, a huge chunk of the day had disappeared. It was as if she'd found that perfect spot where everything was easy, and all she had to do was let her fingers do the work. Kira let out a little shriek as a loud thud suddenly hit her desk. It was so startling that she jumped up from her seat, and for a moment, Kira was teetering on the edge, almost tumbling to the floor. Kira I'm sorry said, I didn't mean that, "Ma'am?" Kira's eyes flew open, and she sat up with a start, trying to shake off the fogginess. A security guard was standing over her, looking like he'd been up all night, with a big flashlight in his hand pointing it at Kira. She looked around, taking in the empty office — the lights were low, and the usual chatter was strangely quiet. Kira was scared, as the silence was kind of creepy, and it made her feel a bit lightheaded. Kira tried to remember what had happened, but her mind was a total blank. The guard's tired face was the only thing she could really focus on, and even that seemed fuzzy. The guard's presence was the only thing that seemed real, as Kira found herself staring at him, trying to make sense. Kira felt a bit disoriented, like she was trying to wake up from a dream, but couldn't quite shake it off. The guard's eyes, though tired, seemed kind, and she felt a sense of comfort in his presence. Kira's voice was barely audible, a soft whisper that sounded a bit hoarse from not being used for hours. "I'm almost done," she said, her words laced with exhaustion. She paused, curiosity getting the better of her, and asked, "What time is it?" The question was spoken in a tone that hinted at a concern that it might be really late, and she couldn't help but wonder what the clock had in store. As she waited for an answer, her tiredness seemed to seep into every word, every breath, like the silence that had preceded her speaking. The guard glanced at his watch and told her, "It's getting really late, ma'am. The cleaning crew wrapped up about an hour ago, so you're the only one still here in the building.
