CHAPTER 1

322 Words
It's a rainy Friday morning, the kind of rain that didn’t pour but lingered like a cold warning. Kira stood at the doorway of her small apartment, glancing at her dying mother, fragile and pale on the bed. Every breath her mother took seemed to demand effort. Kira inhaled hard, forcing herself to speak. “I’ll be back soon Mum, with the money for your medical bills.” Hoping to get an emergency loan from her company today, she had no other choice. To pay for her mother's mounting medical bills. Kira's mother’s faint nod was all the permission Kira needed. Kira slowly turned, stepped out, and shut the door behind her. Outside, the city moved relentlessly through the freezing cold rain, but Kira felt detached, as if the world had become a blur around her. Kira walked some distance before grappling a cab. The cab ride was short, but every second she tightened the knot in Kirk's chest, thinking about her dying mother at home, relying on her, and how to get the loan of $5,700 from her company, knowing fully well that it would be kind of difficult getting that large amount. Kira spent her last 10 dollars on her cab fare, she felt like she had already lost the day stepping out of the cab. As she pushed the old glass office door open, the sharp, acrid smell of ink hit her. Kira wrinkled her nose but pressed on, forcing a smile.“Good morning everyone,” Kira said softly… No one responded, as they quickly grabbed their things. The office was silent, too silent for a normal Friday morning where people usually chatted, laughed, or at least exchanged glances in the morning lull. But today, the air was heavy with tension. Kira went straight to her dusty desk, scaring every corner of the office, before booting her old desktop, and immediately she felt this unease growing. nside her.
