Once they had gathered about a dozen intact Mentha clumps, Ethan looked up. The sun was leaning westward, its rays slanting across the canopy. He frowned and turned his gaze to the right of the path.
“We should head back. We’ve wandered pretty far. We’re slightly southward now. Head in the opposite direction of the sun and we’ll return.”
Stella raised an eyebrow: “You’re using the sun to navigate?”
“No compass on the island. We have to rely on ourselves.” Ethan answered simply, his tone calm as if it were obvious.
“Wow…” Stella murmured: “How can you be sure?”
“In the afternoon, shadows fall east. In the morning, they fall west. Simple.” Ethan replied.
Lucas joined in: “I’ve seen Ethan do this a few times. You’re just surprised ‘cause this is your first.”
