Lilia didn’t remember falling asleep. She didn’t remember closing her eyes. Only that she woke. It was still dark and cold with the embers of the fire burnt out. Beyond the window, the squall rising up from the ocean had lessened. The rain fell in a gentler mist, tapping against the window pane. She could feel the approaching dawn and closed her eyes, just for a moment. George still held her wrapped beneath her arm. She had told herself that things would be better in the morning, it really had been a lie. Liliana eased out of the bed. She picked her way across his clothes to reclaim her own.
