Chapter 2
You worthless omega, how dare you stand in my way!" the young lady spat.
I was huddled in the corner where I held my stomach wincing in pain. I heard whispers from those who stood to watch. She advanced towards me and stood, glaring at me. She was about to drag me when a voice halted her action.
"Alvira, do not waste your time with that slave. Your father demands your presence."
Alvira sneered at me then left. I saw the sympathetic look on Dixcy's face. As she was about to reach me, a guard stopped her. I was in so much pain, but I struggled to get to my feet. With gentle steps I walked into a barn. Tears streamed down my face.
I was alone in the barn and I cried my eyes out. I couldn't stand the misery and ill-treatment meted out on me. If not for the huge tax which was only imposed on Omegas in the Moonshadow pack, I wouldn't be here.
Omegas were treated with disdain and made to do all the hard workload. I straightened my back as I started getting healed from the injuries I had sustained. Then the pain stopped. Unknownst to them, I am not an omega but a powerful werewolf. My first shift started when I turned ten. Unlike most werewolves who only turned sixteen or eighteenth.
When it happened, Sara instructed me to keep it a secret, which I did. Since Sara was an Omega, they felt I was one too.
I was enraged by what that young woman had done to me. I felt like ripping her apart, but my wolf Kira spoke. "Nella, be careful. I know you're pained. I am too. Just wave it off. "
I responded. "Alright. We can't continue like this. Maybe when our mate shows up, we will leave."
"That would be awesome," Kira said.
I heard a sound at the door and I snapped out of my conversation with Kira.
"You're here," Dixcy said. She was carrying a bowl of water and a towel. Her eyes roamed my body and her brows furrowed in confusion. "I thought you were injured?"
Damn! How do I explain that my injuries were healed? It will raise questions and I don't want that. "Uhh…. Uhm, It was a minor injury, nothing serious," I lied.
She kept the bowl on the floor. It seemed she was convinced. "Alright, you have bloodstains on your mouth. Clean up quickly," she handed me the towel.
I was grateful for her help. I rinsed my mouth and cleaned myself up. My stomach rumbled. I was hungry. I haven't eaten anything all through the night, even today.
Dixcy stared at me. "Are you hungry?"
I nodded in affirmation. "Yes."
She sighed. "I wish I could help. They feed us once every two days."
I was gobsmacked. "Are you serious? How are we going to survive?"
"That's the idea. They wish we could all drop-dead. Stay here while I rummage through the kitchen for leftovers."
Dixcy left the room and locked the door. My shoulders slumped in tiredness. I sat on the floor and drew my knee to my chest.
Moments later, Dixcy stepped in. She had something in her hand which was wrapped in white cloth. Her eyes twinkled as she smiled. "I found something," she said. She sat on the floor and unwrapped the package.
My stomach growled the moment I saw loaves of bread, sausages, and apples. Nearly drooling at the sight of food.
We started eating. I can't remember the last time I had a decent meal. Dixcy and I heard shuffling feet coming towards the door. "We need to hide this. We will be beaten if we are caught eating."
Our hands trembled as we wrapped them up carefully. And she hid it in a basket. I picked up the crumbs on the floor and threw them through the window. And I cleaned my hand on my worn out gown covered in sweat.
The door opened, and a woman stepped in. She looked at us scornfully. "I was told that you were coming here." Her eyes darted around. "The moon festival will commence tonight. As the head maid, I have been instructed to inform both of you of your duties. You're to serve the guests.
She paused, her cold gaze was unsettling. "Before I forget, you are not to be seen eating or drinking anything at the festival." She threw some clothes at us. "Take this and dress properly. Clean up nice cause you girls stink like a skunk!" She turned back and left.
I picked up the clothes which could pass for rags. We had no choice. We changed into one and left for the kitchen.
It was night and guests from different packs were arriving. Many hoped to find their mate in such a gathering. And to think today is my birthday. I was sad. I shoved the thought away and continued serving the guests.
The air was filled with music, laughter and chattering sounds. My arms ached from carrying a tray which contained different meals and drinks. I was alone in the kitchen, loading the tray when a scent hit my nostrils. It was a strong scent which I could not resist.
Suddenly, my head snapped up, and I saw a dominant male figure standing by the doorway. My heartbeat increased. I couldn't resist his magnetic gaze as I found myself walking towards him.
My wolf kira leaped up joyfully. "Mate. Mate"
He mumbled "mate."
I was happy, I had found my mate. He growled, his magnetic gaze turning into a cold look. "I can't be with you. You're a slave and that means you're an omega!," he snarled. "I, Alpha Zhorex of Baysoon Pack. Hereby reject you as my mate and future Luna!
I felt a sharp pain in my chest as I gasped for breath. My hopes were dashed. He turned his back on me. "Alpha Zhorex, you will pay for hurting me!," I cried in pain.
