Across town, Henry stumbled back to his apartment.
He had felt terrible about lying to Caro, of course he had. But he’d only done so because that was the only way things would turn out right in the end.
They were meant to be together. If she wasn’t the woman he was supposed to marry, then that woman did not exist. And she had wanted to marry him, too, before he had gone and ruined everything. He knew she had, knew she never would have allowed him the intimacies they had shared by the fireside had that not been her hope.
All he had needed was a little time to get his finances back on a steady footing. That was the only way they could have a future together.
And if he needed to lie in order to have a chance at that future, he wasn’t about to apologize for it.
