The following afternoon, Henry arrived at the gardens of the British Museum a quarter-hour before the appointed time. He wandered the graveled paths in a daze, hardly seeing the exotic plants that surrounded him.
His world had shifted off its axis in the past twenty-four hours. He had known for a while now that Caroline Astley was beautiful, that she was witty, and that she made him smile until his face hurt. He had also known ever since his father informed him that the Greville family was insolvent that all of those lovely qualities came with a “but.” But she hated him, but he couldn’t go near her lest the Duke of Trevissick ruin them, and above all, but she would never marry him once she found out that the Greville fortune was gone.
