In the end, recovering the lid to the cosmetics box turned out to be the easiest thing of all.
Henry started off the day by relieving Percival Thistlethwaite of his one hundred pounds. He then returned home to find two notes awaiting him.
The first was from Richard Cuming, inviting him to call that afternoon. It happened that Mr. Brownwood had asked to come round again, saying he had a selection of new items. So if Henry wished to meet this Brownwood fellow himself, he need only call at three o’clock.
The second note was from Caroline:
My sister, Anne, has come to nurse me today, so I must pretend to be ill. Do send me a note and let me know what happens with Lord Coddington and with Mr. Cuming. –C.A.
