I had just reached the office door when Peter called me.“What are you up to, kid? It's already 8 o'clock and you're not here yet. The new leader is about to arrive; are you trying to make me look bad?”
I hurriedly said,“I'm here, I'm here! Which conference room are you in?”
“Room 9, Room 9. The leader isn't here yet, so come in through the back door. Hurry up.”
After hanging up, I ran toward the conference room on the second floor. Fortunately, our new manager hadn't arrived either. It seemed she was running late today, too? Thank goodness she was late; otherwise, if I were late for her very first meeting, I didn't know what she would think of me.
Just then, I heard a familiar voice.“Sorry to keep everyone waiting a few minutes.”
I looked up. Talk about bad luck—narrow roads for enemies. Was our new Administrative General Manager really her? This was too much of a coincidence. I was done for, absolutely done for. Was I going to be tortured to death by her from now on?
She continued,“My name is Evelyn. I’m mainly responsible for administrative matters here, and I may later oversee some HR functions as well. I’m very happy to meet everyone, and I hope we can all work together to get the job done. I won't say much more; let's introduce ourselves one by one, and mention your current position in the company.”
I sat in the very back row, afraid to look up for the longest time, terrified that she might see me. Just then, Peter stood up first, introducing his core duties and future work direction. Then, one by one, the others bragged about their positions and how well they were doing, while she listened with a smile and a nod.
Slowly, everyone finished their introductions, and it was finally my turn. I stood up, keeping my head down low, afraid of letting her see my face.“My name is Brian. I am an administrative driver, mainly responsible for the daily commute of leaders, and usually shuttling company clients back and forth.”
I heard her say with a smile,“Brian. That's a nice name. It seems today really is a good day to meet everyone.”
I looked up at her. The moment our eyes met, the smile on her face instantly froze.
She scrutinized me for two or three seconds without saying a word. I figured she must be plotting how to mess with me.
Suddenly, she shouted loudly,“Stand up straight! An administrative driver needs to have good posture—stand like a soldier, sit like a statue. Drivers often give clients the first impression; you represent the company's image. Is how you look now acceptable?”
Startled by her loud scolding, the others sat up straight, one by one. Stung by her words, I also threw my chest out and looked up at her.
“Brian, write a written report on your work experience here at the company. Once it's done, bring it to my office. That’s all for today, everyone go back to work.” With that, she walked out of the conference room.
As soon as she walked out, a few of the women started giggling and gossiping.“Haha, did you guys notice our new manager just now? Why is one of her eyebrows bigger than the other?”
“Yeah, yeah. She's so pretty, how come she doesn't know how to apply makeup? Ah, what a pity.”
I guess I'm the only one here who knows the reason. Luckily, her scraped knee was hidden by her skirt, otherwise who knows how they’d gossip about her.
I walked over to them and said,“Alright, cut it out. You dare gossip about the manager? Even if she doesn't draw her eyebrows, none of you would dare compare your looks to hers. She leaves you guys in the dust.”
Just then, Lucy walked over and said,“You really are pathetic. She just scolded you, and here you are defending her. I'll see how you write your report later.”
Her comment reminded me. Right, I’m just a driver; how am I supposed to write this report? Write about who I drove and dropped off every day?
I walked over to Lucy's side and said,“Lucy, let me bring you back a coffee later. What flavor do you want?”
She looked at me and smiled, saying,“Alright, don't be so polite. I'll write it for you, my sweet darling.” She picked up a folder and walked out of the conference room.
What was this woman's intention today? Pointing me out by name in the meeting like that—was this personal revenge, or was she making an example of me to establish authority?
Not long after, Lucy finished the work report for me. I walked to her office and saw her busy at her computer. Just as I was about to knock, her secretary suddenly walked over, grabbed me, and said,“What are you doing? Our manager is in a video conference.”
I turned around to look. This new manager was really something; she even brought her own secretary. I looked at this girl—she looked to be in her early twenties, maybe a fresh college grad. But she had delicate features, and her face looked so tender, as if water would seep out if you pinched it.
I looked at her and said,“The manager asked me to deliver a work report.”
“Do you have an appointment? You're just barging in. Wait over there.” She pointed to the rest area by the door.
Damn, what kind of tone was that? I’ve worked at this company for so many years, and no secretary has ever dared talk to me like that. Even department managers have to nod and bow when they see me. This little girl, scolding me?
I sized her up and thought, Fine. Just wait until the day you need my ride; I’ll teach you a lesson then.
She seemed to hear our voices at the door, for she spoke toward it,“Sophia, let him in. I asked him to come.”
The secretary looked at me and said,“Go on in. Remember to come out quickly, though.”
I walked in, deliberately turning back to make a face at the secretary, sticking my tongue out. That little gesture made her laugh instantly.
I walked to her desk. The first thing she said when she looked up was,“It truly is no accident. You are like a ghost that won't scatter. I realize that whenever I run into you, I have bad luck. Tell me, when are you moving out?”
I placed the work report in front of her and said,“Manager, didn't you ask me to deliver a work report? Is this acceptable?”
“Don't change the subject. I asked you when you are moving out.”
I looked around the office and said,“Manager, it's work hours now. It's not appropriate to discuss personal matters, is it? Why don't we talk after work?”
She was so angry she couldn't speak for a moment.“Fine, you want to quote rules at me? I'll just say one thing: either move out today, or resign today.”
I knew she was speechless from anger. Even if she wanted me to move out, she couldn't threaten me with resignation, because company regulations don't allow firing employees without cause for serious misconduct.
“Okay, okay. I'll move out tonight after work, is that okay? I’ll sleep on the streets tonight before I go back there. Satisfied?”
She stood up and turned her back to me.“That is not my concern. You can go now.”
“Then about my work report, will you take a look? Is it okay to write it this way?”
Without turning her head, she said,“No need to look at it. Take it away.”
At that moment, I remembered her eyebrows were still uneven. I whispered to her,“Manager, you haven't finished drawing your eyebrows.”
As soon as the words left my mouth, she turned around in a rage and said,“Brian, get the hell out right now.”
