It seems that comment really pissed her off, but I was just reminding her out of kindness, wasn't I? This woman really doesn't know a good thing when she sees it. But seeing how angry she was, I suddenly felt a twinge of guilt. If I hadn't hogged the bathroom this morning, she wouldn't have embarrassed herself like that, and she certainly wouldn't have scraped up her leg.
As I walked out of the manager's office, her secretary saw me, reached out to stop me, and asked,“What did you say to the manager? You've really upset her.”
I scrutinized the secretary's eyebrows; they were actually drawn quite well. Noticing me staring at her eyes, she said self-consciously,“What's wrong with you? Why are you staring at me?”
“Do you have an eyebrow pencil?”
My question caught her off guard.“Huh? An eyebrow pencil? What do you need that for?”
I glanced back at the manager's office and whispered,“It’s for your manager. Just take it to her directly. Don't ask any other questions, or you'll be the next one getting scolded.” She nodded, looking only half-convinced by my explanation.
Back in the transport office, Peter walked over.“Brian, what is going on with you today? How did you manage to offend our new manager? She didn't yell at anyone else—why did she pick on you first thing in the morning?”
I thought to myself that I certainly couldn't tell them I’m roommates with the manager. Otherwise, if word got out, they’d never stop gossiping about me.
I smiled and said,“Maybe she likes me and is too shy to say it directly. Haven't you heard?'Beating is affection and scolding is love.' It’s just another way of expressing love.”
“Alright, knock it off. You’d better behave yourself and don't give the new manager any reason to pick on you, or I'll suffer for it too. Brian, come with me in a bit to book a banquet table. Old rules, right? We need to make a gesture since we have a new leader.”
“Peter, is that really appropriate? A banquet on the first day? Did you even ask if she’s going?”
Peter gave me a look.“If we invite her, she'll go. It's her first day; surely she wants to mingle with everyone? Administration is different from the technical side. You get what I mean?”
Alright, since he’d arranged it, I had no choice but to go along with it. I walked to the garage, ready to drive off, when someone patted me on the back. I turned around and saw Benjamin, the head of the cafeteria.
Benjamin was in his fifties, a portly man with a jowly face. I heard he had some relative on the group's board of directors, and using that connection, he usually acted arrogant and domineering around the company. Even though he managed the cafeteria, his position and benefits were far from low; even our director treated him with deference. Some also said the guy was too much of a womanizer, otherwise he would have been in senior management long ago.
I often drove him around, so naturally, I knew plenty of his gossip and scandals. He was usually quite polite to me, though.
“Brian, I heard our department has a new female leader. Why wasn't I notified about the meeting today?”
I smiled and said,“Boss, surely the new leader has to pay her respects to you first? Just wait; maybe she’ll come to visit you any moment now.”
“Hey, keep it down, keep it down. She is the leader after all, hehe.”
He continued,“I heard the department is treating her to dinner tonight. Is that true?”
Damn, this old fart is well-informed. Peter literally just told me, and he already knows? It just goes to show how powerful his connections are; he has spies everywhere.
I nodded and said,“Yes, yes. Peter hasn't told you yet? It would be a real pity if you missed this dinner.”
My flattery kept him laughing non-stop. Afraid he might pull me aside to ask all sorts of questions, I took advantage of his distraction, jumped into the car, started the engine, and drove off.
After Peter and I finished booking the banquet, it wasn't even eleven o'clock yet. Peter said he was going to the bank, so I drove back alone.
On the way, I happened to pass our apartment complex. Seeing the pharmacy at the entrance, I suddenly remembered she had scraped her leg that morning. Maybe I should buy her a bottle of Gentian Violet; if too much time passed, it might get infected.
Right next to the pharmacy, there happened to be a ladies' boutique. I saw stockings hanging by the door. Should I buy her a pair while I was at it?
But is it appropriate for a man to buy stockings for a woman? Would she call me a p*****t? Oh well, never mind her. Whether she takes them or not is her problem.
I went back home to grab a pair of her shoes. Her high heel had broken off that morning, so she wouldn't be able to make it through the dinner tonight without a replacement.
Back home, I opened the shoe cabinet. I saw that all her shoes were high heels, pair after pair, arranged neatly inside.
I picked a pair with a lower heel and held them in my hand. I couldn't help but chuckle—high heels and stockings... was I really trying to suck up to my new leader? That wasn't like me at all. If word got out, I’d be laughed to death. It was just too humiliating.
But then again, I was the one who caused her trouble. Otherwise, I wouldn't have to do these things that went against my better nature. With everything gathered, I drove back to the company.
I originally planned to give these things to her secretary, but when I got to the office door, the secretary wasn't there. Her office door was closed, so I guessed she wasn't in either.
Forget it, I'll deal with it after lunch. If I really can't find her, the worst that happens is I sneak them back to her tonight.
Peter came back, saw me holding a big box, and asked,“Brian, what’s that you’ve got there? You look so sneaky.”
“Ah, this? I bought these shoes for myself just now. I was afraid I’d forget them in the car, so I just brought them in, hehehe.” Masking my embarrassment, I hurried into the office and hid them away.
