Olivia slowly blinked her eyes open but there was a direct flash of light and she squeezed them shut immediately.
“Oh sorry, please turn off the light nurse.”
She heard a soft voice say and peeked through her lashes to see a man wearing a white coat leaning over her with a worried expression.
She felt disoriented. The room was dim now, and everything felt strange. She felt weirdly uncomfortable as she sat up.
“Where am I?” she asked, her voice hoarse.
The doctor looked relieved to see her awake but quickly shifted to a serious tone. “You had an accident ma'am. I’m terribly sorry to say that you suffered a miscarriage.”
The words hit Olivia like a heavy blow and she stared at him as if he had just made the worst joke.
“What, that can't be right! I was completely fine! There's a baby inside me and it's completely fine right?!”
“I am terribly sorry ma'am. If there is anyone you'd like for us to call–”
But Olivia wasn't listening. Her heart shattered at the news. “What?” She blinked, tears filling her eyes. “No, no, this can’t be happening!”
The doctor nodded sympathetically, but Olivia didn’t want sympathy.
She felt rage boiling inside her. “This is all his fault!” she screamed, thinking of Daniel. “If he hadn’t been with my sister, I’d still have my baby! He killed my baby.” She screamed as the sobs racked her body.
Tears streamed down her face as she cried bitterly, unable to control her grief. She felt completely alone and lost.
After what felt like an eternity, she decided she couldn’t stay in that room any longer. “I want to discharge myself,” she told the doctor through her tears.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” he asked.
“I don’t care! I want to leave!” she insisted.
When she finally walked out of the hospital, she stared at everything and it all little to no meaning to her. She hurried down the street, lost in her thoughts. Suddenly, she bumped into someone.
“Sorry!” Olivia said, looking up at the man, who was holding his phone to his ear.
But she stopped mid-apology when she heard him talking. “Find me a surrogate as soon as possible,” he said firmly. “I don’t want to delay this anymore.” He disconnected the call and gently smiled at her.
“I am so sorry ma'am. Are you alright?”
“Y–yes.” Olivia stuttered.
“Good. My apologies once again and have a good da–”
“I can do it,” she blurted out without thinking.
The man turned to her, surprised. “What do you mean?”
“What you were talking about on the phone just now.”
“Excuse me? You want to be my surrogate?”
“Yes.” Olivia said, moving closer.
“You don't really seem to be in the right frame of mind to be talking about such. No offense ma'am. Please go home or do you need to be dropped off?” The stranger said calmly to Olivia who had already made up her mind on what she wanted.
“I am quite clear minded, thank you very much and I want to do this.”
“But… Why?”
“All I want in return is access to your resources, your power, and your status.”
He stared at her, clearly shocked by her boldness. “You’re serious?”
“Very. You look like someone who has quite a decent amount of cash” Olivia replied, her back straightening. “I need to do something with my life after what just happened. This is my chance.”
“And how would you know that?”
“Well for starters, that's an original and most likely engraved Rolex watch in your hands and that doesn't come cheap. The strap is pure leather and has a name on it as well.
He stared at the watch and back at her as he seemed to weigh his options, then pulled out a card. “Here. Call me.”
“Thank you!” she said, feeling a rush of hope as she took the card from his hand.
After what felt like a lifetime, Olivia returned home. But her hope quickly faded when she saw Daniel sitting on the couch. His expression was cold and distant.
“Olivia, you’re back. I guess you’re feeling better?” he said dismissively.
“You heard the news,” she said, her voice shaking. “I can’t believe you’re more concerned about yourself than what just happened. You weren't even by my side!” Olivia yelled as all her rage from the hospital came pouring back.
Daniel shrugged. “You were careless, Olivia. You didn’t tell me anything about the pregnancy until the last minute. Besides, what was I going to do there?”
“I was going to! I wanted to wait until I was sure it was safe!” she shouted, feeling the anger rise again. “This is not the time to blame me! You’re the one who—”
“Maybe if you’d been honest from the beginning, we wouldn’t be in this mess,” Daniel cut her off, his tone harsh.
Olivia felt the weight of his words crush her. “I can’t do this anymore. I’m leaving,” she said quietly, her heart heavy.
She quickly packed her things, not willing to let any more of his negativity pull her down. As she grabbed her last few belongings, she turned to see Daniel’s eyes glued to his phone like he hadn't even noticed.
Before she left, she took a deep breath and called Jim, the man she had just met.
“Hello?” Jim answered after a few rings.
“I’m ready to discuss the surrogacy. I have thought about it already,” Olivia said.
“Great. I’ll pick you up,” he replied.
Within minutes, Jim arrived. Olivia climbed into his car and was taken aback when felt a strange sense of relief. Instead of pain.
When they reached Jim’s house, she could feel the tears bubbling up again.
Jim, taken aback by her sudden outburst, stares at her until a thought occurs to him, “Let it out,” Jim said gently, handing her a handkerchief.
The tears streamed down her face as she sobbed, releasing the pain that had been trapped inside. Jim stood quietly, unsure how to comfort her asides the idea of giving her the handkerchief.
After a while, Olivia wiped her tears. “Did you think about my offer?” she asked, trying to focus on something else.
He looked thoughtful. “Yes, I did. But we need to do some tests to make sure you’re healthy enough to carry a child.”
“Okay,” she replied eagerly. “When can we do that?”
“Let’s go get the tests done today,” he said, nodding.
They headed to the clinic nearby, and Olivia felt nervous but she had already made up her mind.
“Everything looks good,” the doctor said, smiling. “You’re cleared to carry a child.”
“Thank you!” Olivia exclaimed, joy flooding her.
Later that evening, Jim took her to the courthouse to register the marriage. “We can do this now if you’re ready,” he said.
“I'll admit, it is moving fast but no way in hell am I back out now!” Olivia responded.
The process was quick. Before long, they stood before a judge, and the words “I do” left her lips. It felt surreal, but it was done.
As they walked out, Jim glanced sideways at her. “Are you sure about this?”
“What's done is done.” Olivia shrugged as she got into the car that Jim had opened the door for her.
