Between talking to Annika, dinner, and a movie, the first few hours of the flight passed quickly enough. But once the lights were turned down and people settled into their postprandial drowsiness, Steph’s mind began to wander.
What a shitty year this turned out to be so far!
Life had been good up until the very end of the last one. They’d celebrated Christmas at the barn with a performance by the youngsters. Schorsch, dressed up as Nikolaus, handed out cards and small gifts, followed by Gluehwein and cookies. Christmas at Haus Abendfrieden came next. She’d made it as nice for the residents as she could. Afterwards, she’d gone to her parents as usual. She’d rung in the New Year with Lilou. Everything had been fine then. Well, reasonably so.
