11 The breathing was harsh in Rachel’s ears. How could such a little child move so fast? Rachel panted, her chest tight. She must keep the child in sight. The child looked over her shoulder. Face sad and eyes accusing. “Murderer,” she mouthed. “No!” Rachel cried out, and tripped. “Murderer.” Other voices joined in. Rachel thumped her fists into the ground. She knew what was coming. “Murderer,” the voices said in louder unison. It became a chant. “Murderer, murderer, murderer …” There was no escape. No pity. Rachel looked up at the girl. Stretched her hand towards her, begging for mercy. The child shimmered and was suddenly bathed in a ray of sunshine. She twirled, arms raised above her head and laughter ringing out.
