SHATTERED HEART
The helicopter hovered above the misty airbase like a predator waiting for its prey. Its blades cut through the night with a rhythmic hum, vibrating through Chang Li’s chest. He stepped onto the wet metal floor with his squad behind him—Viper, Falcon, Ghost, and Rhino. Each soldier moved with trained precision, yet the tension in the air was palpable. Every instinct in Chang Li’s body screamed that tonight’s mission would not go as planned. The air smelled of oil, metal, and something else—something metallic and sharp that Chang Li couldn’t place. He tightened his grip on the small USB drive in his hand. It wasn’t just data; it was a key to power and chaos, and everyone in the wrong hands could die. Inside the helicopter, the low hum of the engine mingled with the clicks and clatters of weapons being checked. Chang Li’s eyes flicked to each squad member. Ghost adjusted his grip on the rifle, Rhino’s jaw tightened, and Falcon’s knuckles were white against the g*n. Viper broke the silence. “Did you hear that? The intel sounded… off.” “Focus,” Chang Li said, voice low but steady. “Trust no one. Not even your own shadow.” The radio crackled violently. A harsh, cold voice sliced through the cabin. “Team Delta, stand by. Reports indicate a traitor within your ranks. Proceed with extreme caution.” The words settled like stones in Chang Li’s stomach. Viper swallowed hard, whispering, “A traitor… among us?” Chang Li did not answer. His eyes scanned the darkness outside. The forest that awaited them was a labyrinth of shadows, alive with unseen eyes. The helicopter touched down softly in a clearing surrounded by dense forest. Mist curled around their boots as the squad advanced. Each step was careful, silent, rehearsed—but even rehearsed motions could not erase the feeling of doom that weighed on Chang Li’s shoulders. A twig snapped under Falcon’s boot. Chang Li froze, signaling the team to halt. His heart hammered. Then—gunfire shattered the night. Bullets tore through the mist, splintering wood and sending dirt and leaves flying. “Return fire!” Chang Li shouted, moving with lethal precision. Every shot counted. Every movement had to be perfect. He could feel the soldiers of his squad relying on him, their lives in his hands. “They’re too many!” Rhino yelled, ducking behind a tree. “Fall back! To the extraction point—now!” Chang Li commanded. They ran, the forest stretching endlessly, shadows twisting like living things around them. Bullets whistled past, thumping into the ground and tree trunks. Chang Li’s mind raced—not just with the battle, but with memories of Fan Yue, his wife. Her laugh, her smile, the way she always believed in him, even when the world did not. When they finally reached a small, secluded building at the city’s edge, the chaos had already followed them. Across the nation, television screens went dark, only to broadcast a shocking message. Chang Li’s face filled every screen, marked boldly: TRAITOR – WANTED. The anchor’s calm voice was a knife to his gut. “Chang Li, one of our elite operatives, is now considered a traitor. Authorities urge citizens to report any sightings immediately.” The lie was complete. The betrayal not only destroyed his mission—it destroyed his reputation, and with it, a part of his soul. He burst into the apartment, panting, heart hammering. Fan Yue was there, trembling, eyes wide with fear. “Chang… what happened? Are you… are you safe?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper. “No… they’re after me. They think I’m a traitor, Fan… but it’s a lie,” Chang Li gasped, holding the USB drive out to her. “Take this—keep it safe. Promise me.” Her eyes glistened with unshed tears. “I won’t let them take you,” she whispered fiercely. “I swear it. I’ll protect you… no matter what.” Suddenly, a loud crash shattered the fragile safety of the apartment. Soldiers stormed in, guns raised, and the room erupted into chaos. “Chang! Run! Run now!” Fan Yue screamed, throwing herself against the door, trying to barricade it. Chang Li’s heart tore in two. He wanted to stay, to fight by her side, but instinct and survival forced him forward. “Fan… stay alive. Protect this at all costs!” he shouted, the words barely escaping his lips. Bullets tore through the apartment. Fan Yue fought to hold them off, her hands trembling as splinters of wood flew around her. Then—a shot rang out. Fan Yue collapsed. “No… Fan!” Chang Li screamed, lunging for her, but strong hands dragged him back. His vision blurred with tears. Her eyes met his one last time—filled with love, fear, and silent apology—before closing forever From above, the city lights glimmered cold and indifferent. Chang Li was dragged away, powerless. The memory of Fan Yue, her bloodied hands, and her final gaze would burn into his mind forever. A phone rang, shrill and unrelenting. The voice on the other end was merciless. “Finish it,” the voice commanded. “No! I won’t… I won’t let this end like this!” Chang Li screamed, his voice carrying across the empty streets. Darkness descended, heavy and absolute. A storm of vengeance, grief, and betrayal had begun, and nothing would ever be the same
