Chapter 12: The wolf

“I’m so sorry, Jax said he wants to speak with you,” I said. “Jax? You went down into the basement to talk to him?” He sounded p.issed, and I wisely kept my head low. “I’m sorry, I just needed to see a friendly face.” He snorted a laugh at that and said, “never heard Jax being described as a friendly face before.” A small smile tugged at my lips. It disappeared when his gaze moved over my face. What happened to you, you look terrible.” “Oh it’s nothing, I’m fine, honestly.” I was surprised at his soft tone when he said, “if someone is hurting you here, you can tell me.” “I don’t want to be a bother or anything.” “You’re not, my bothers and I need to start learning to deal with situations like this and other responsibilities anyway. In two months we become the new Alphas of the pack as Dad and Mum want to retire from it early.” Woah. So these brothers weren’t just powerful wolves. They were future leaders. Fenris looked at me expectantly. “Now tell me what happened.” I told him, and whereas Jax was hot-tempered and aggressive, Fenris responded more like some exasperated father. “They aren’t supposed to be abusing you like that, I’ll talk to them.” “Please don’t!” I pleaded, and without thinking, I grabbed his arm. He frowned at my hand on his arm and looked up at me. “Jax may like you, but I don’t, I’m not your friend, I’m simply following through with pack rules, nothing more.” I quickly let go of him, and he pushed past me and muttered, “let’s go talk to Jax first, and then I’ll deal with them.” “Hey bro! Looking good,” Jax grinned at Fenris who looked back at him completely unimpressed. “What do you want, Jax.” The grin vanished instantly. Like a flip being switched. “You f.ucking know what they did to her?” Jax growled. Fenris nodded. “I will deal with it.” Jax gripped the bars hard enough the steel groaned. “I want you to protect Rose, I promised her our pack wasn’t like that. We don’t hurt or attack weak wolves unwarranted.” Fenris looked unreadable, so I had no clue what was going through his head. “I’ll take care of it,” he said. “But I’m not following some omega around like I’m her bodyguard.” “Then let me out so I can.” “And risk more bodies piling up? I don’t think so, brother.” “I only hurt monsters, not innocent people,” Jax snapped. “Doesn’t matter, you’re still putting yourself and us at risk.” “I dispose of them very thoroughly, there’s nothing left when I’m done.” Jax said it so calmly and casually that I saw Fenris look taken aback, both by his tone and what he had said. He went back to being unreadable and turned to me. “How old are you?” “Twenty,” I replied, confused. “When’s your birthday?” “May tenth.” He looked back at Jax. “Perfect, she turns twenty-one in two weeks, the age when she will know who her true mate is, then he can protect her.” Jax leaned his forehead against the cage still holding the bars. “What makes you think she’ll find him that quick and easy, he might not even be in our pack.” “We will see. In the meantime, I will sort the issue out.” Fenris walked off after that, leaving me staring after him. I looked back at Jax and whispered, “what does that mean? I’ll find my mate when I’m twenty-one?” Jax shifted slightly. “When female wolves turns twenty-one, their scent changes. The male will know she’s their mate by her smell because it will be the best f.ucking smell ever. His smile faded slightly. “It’s hard to explain.” His fingers drummed against the bars. “It’s a soul-deep feeling, but you don’t have to accept your mate, it won’t kill you or anything so dramatic, but you’ll never meet someone who will be as perfect for you, and you’ll always crave them.” He shrugged. “Like I’ve said before, it usually takes the first kiss to feel the beginning effects of the bond between the two of you. The male marks his female on the neck during an acceptance ritual, and in a way, it’s like a marriage and permanently seals the deal, which sounds creepy as f***k to me, but I guess with your soulmate you won’t care at the time. I don’t f.ucking know, that’s the best way I can explain it for you.” “I have a true mate? A soulmate?” I asked. I’d always grown up believing I’d forever be alone, that no one would ever want me or love me because I was so ugly and a monster as my parents had always told me. “Yeah, of course, everyone has one, but it’s not always easy finding them, they could be in a different pack, a different country, they always seem to find each other eventually though, fate literally pulls you together.” I nodded and smiled. “You better get out of here before Dad has a f.ucking tantrum,” Jax said. “And make sure my brother deals with those f.ucks.” I giggled at the tantrum part and made my way back up to see Fenris was already dealing with it. Fenris already had Leo on the floor bleeding and submitting along with the other two male wolves whose names I still didn’t know. How had he fought all three so easily and quickly? I thought Jax was scary, and it seemed his cold and quiet brother could be the same. The females, including Jessica, clung to one another and were on their knees showing submission, so he wouldn’t punish them in the same way. Fenris stood over them. Calm. Controlled. Far scarier than yelling. “You know the rules here. We don’t attack any wolf without them accepting the challenge, and we absolutely do not ever hurt a weaker wolf than ourselves!” His gaze swept over each of them. “If I see our new omega bleeding again, I promise I’ll have you all bleeding, maybe I’ll even send you to spend the night in the cage with my brother.” The mention of Jax had them all whimpering and whining from fear. Fenris looked up when I walked in quietly, his eyes met mine. “Leave!” The command was directed at them, and they quickly got up, practically tripping over themselves escaping. He walked over to me and towered over me at six-foot-two. “They shouldn’t bother you again, but as a way of apology, it’s not much, but is there anything you’d like to do for the rest of the day?” Surprise ran through me. “What do you mean?” I asked. “You don’t have to clean today, so if there’s anything you’d like to do, you can.” “Can I run in my wolf form? I’ve never done it before. I never had the freedom to.” He raised his eyebrows in surprise and nodded. “Of course, the forest is safe for you to roam about as a wolf, it’s private property, and I’ll make sure they don’t follow you.” “Thank you,” I said quietly, he gave a nod then left me. I think I was starting to develop a little crush on Fenris like I had on Jax. Great. Clearly my taste in men involved emotionally unavailable werewolves with anger issues. I headed outside and entered the forest. I found a quiet spot by some bushes and began the change. I tried to keep quiet, but it was impossible when your bones were breaking and reshaping themselves, I cried out more than once and dug my nails into the dirt. I wanted to scream from the pain, and then finally I was in my full wolf form. It took about fifteen minutes to complete the change and I lay on the floor panting heavily as I adjusted. My wolf form was black like my hair color, my eyes gold. I got up onto all fours and gently trotted along deeper into the forest. This was amazing. Everything felt stronger. Sharper. The scent of pine. Damp earth. Wildflowers. Rabbits somewhere in the distance. I felt so happy and truly like myself, both of which I hadn’t felt in such a long time. It felt like my first true change to wolf. Real freedom. Roaming around in my small bedroom hadn’t felt real, and in the hospital it hadn’t felt good either. I’d only been allowed to change on the full moon, when we were forced to change by the werewolf gene. This was my first voluntary change, and I’d noticed because I had to bring on the change it was slightly more painful than when I had the help of the moon to transform. The forest was massive, and it became darker the deeper in I went, there were so many trees that stretched high above that their branches knitted together and blocked out most of the light. Moss covered fallen logs. Ferns brushed against my legs. The air smelled of damp earth, pine needles, wildflowers, and tiny creatures hiding beneath the undergrowth. It should have frightened me, been overwhelming, but I felt like I was home. I began to run. At first, my movements were clumsy and uncertain, but instinct quickly took over. My paws struck the ground harder. Faster. Trees blurred past me. I ran until my lungs ached and burned. When I slowed down, I was panting, and happier than I could ever remember being. I figured I could truly be myself out here with no one around, so I jumped and dived onto the dirt floor and rolled around in it, wriggling like an overexcited pup allowing myself to be silly and have fun. I laughed, but in wolf form it came out a yip. I found butterflies, tiny white and yellow wings fluttered above the wildflowers, and I crept up on them with all the seriousness of a mighty predator stalking prey. Then I pounced, my paws hit the dirt hard next to the flowers, making the butterflies scatter and fly off. I yipped again. This was great. I was crouching low, preparing to launch myself at another innocent butterfly, when I felt eyes on me. I froze. Turning my head I saw a large dark gray and white wolf watching me, his sharp intelligent eyes held amusement in them at what I had been doing. If I could have blushed in wolf form I would have. How embarrassing. Werewolves were fiercely dominant and powerful and violent, and there I was chasing flipping butterflies, and now I’d been caught doing it. He padded over to me and I got a hold of his scent. He smelt like Jax, like the fresh cold night air, vanilla but also like the forest itself, unlike Jax’s third scent of power. I knew by that last smell that it was Fenris. I tilted my head at him questioningly, and he answered, “I guess I’m doing what my brother told me to do, watching over you, at least for today.” His voice was in my head and I freaked out. My head swung from side to side and my ears flattened in fear, what the holy crap! He must have heard my thoughts because I heard him laugh. “We can communicate internally while in wolf form. Go play, I’ll watch over you.” “That’s embarrassing,” I thought. “Just go play, Rose. I don’t care what you do.” He lay down on the ground and rested his head on his paws. His eyes closed. I knew he was most likely pretending to be asleep for my sake, but I appreciated it and carried on playing. I chased more butterflies because apparently I was a big pup, I did the same with some birds. Eventually, I found a small stream cutting through the trees. The water shimmered over smooth stones, catching little pieces of light that managed to slip through the canopy. I lowered my head and drank some water, then immediately began snorting and snuffling. The water tasted filthy, what a moron I was. I glanced over my shoulder to see Fenris watching me in a way that I knew if he were in human form as a man, his eyebrows would have been raised in an ‘what the hell were you doing’ look. I jumped into the water and splashed about soaking my fur and my paws, slipping over stones, it was so fun. But it wasn’t fun for long because I’d moved a little too far from Fenris. The air changed. The forest went quiet. Too quiet. My ears twitched. I lifted my head. Jessica stood a short distance away between the trees. Leo was beside her, so was the blonde female who had both spilled cherry lemonade on me and performed oral s**x on Fenris. All three of them looked enraged. Leo looked as bruised as I was. His face was bruised from Fenris’ earlier punishment, one eye swollen and dark. That should have made me feel safer. It didn’t. His anger rolled from him in waves. I flattened my ears and lay my head down on my paws as a show of submission, and whined softly. They didn’t care and wasted no time in grabbing me. Leo moved first. He grabbed me hard and kicked me in the side, making me yelp. Jessica shut me up by wrapping some sharp metal wire around my snout. It cut into my skin, slicing through fur and flesh. I couldn’t make any noise now except to whine. I tried to jerk away, but Leo held me down while the blonde helped twist it tighter. I could have bitten them, but being an omega, it wasn’t in my nature to be aggressive even to protect myself. I wasn’t going to miraculously turn into this strong female wolf that fought back and made everyone regret touching her, no matter how much I wished I could, that just wasn’t the omega way. Fenris must have heard my first yelp because he came charging from between the trees, all grey and white fury, teeth bared, eyes blazing. He snarled and growled at them menacingly, and I saw their terror, they hadn’t expected him to be there. He snapped at Jessica, his jaws clamped around her leg. She screamed as his huge fangs tore into her calf. Blood dripped heavily all over the ground. “We are so sorry,” Leo pleaded, dropping to his knees, head bowed low. Jessica and the blonde followed, trembling as they lowered themselves in submission. Jessica’s leg was so damaged she had to spread it out along the floor, unable to put weight on it. Fenris stood over them, growling so deeply I felt it in my chest. Stay. Th command wasn’t spoken aloud in human words, but they obeyed. He disappeared into the trees and returned a few minutes later in human form. He wore nothing but sweatpants, showing off all that perfect muscle, broad shoulders and carved abs. I noticed he had an Adonis belt going on, and I would have enjoyed the view if I hadn’t been in so much pain. “All of you back to the pack house,” he ordered. His voice was ice-cold. “Now!” Leo opened his mouth. Fenris stepped closer. “I’ll have the Alpha deal with you himself since you clearly won’t listen to me.” They tried to beg and plead, but he cut them off, and they started heading back, Jessica dragging her leg behind her. Once they were gone Fenris crouched in front of me, his anger vanished from his face, replaced by concentration as he tried to remove the wire from my snout, but they had wound it so tight it wouldn’t budge, and I yelped and whined. Fenris’ jaw clenched. “I’m really sorry, it’s not coming off. Do you think you can walk back to the pack house, so I can use something to remove it?” I slowly got up onto shaky legs and painfully slowly we finally got back to the house. Everyone stared at me as I went inside. A soaked, bleeding omega wolf with wire wrapped around her snout was probably hard to ignore. Fenris led me into the kitchen and forbid anyone else coming in. He found some pliers and slowly cut the wire and gently pulled the barbed wire off, ignoring my whimpers and whines because it was the only way to get it all off. His hands had some blood on from my injured snout, and he washed them before coming back with a cloth and gently cleaning my wounds. It was painful, and I tried getting away to the point he had to hold my head in place on the floor so that he could finish cleaning me and put some numbing cream on. I began whining in pain and fear. Busy cleaning me, he murmured, “I’m so sorry, baby, hold on. I’m almost done, I promise.” I froze. I don’t think he’d realized he’d called me baby and I was surprised the quiet and moody werewolf had a softer side to him. He finally let me go and said, “you can shift back safely now.” I whined softly. Fenris studied me. “You don’t want to change back?” I licked his hand in answer, I wasn’t sure how else to say yes. He looked surprised when I licked him and I felt shy, realising it probably wasn’t something werewolves did, they were wolves, not puppies. Whoops. For a moment, Fenris only stared at me. Then he sighed. “okay, well, you can stay in my room until you feel ready to shift back.” He knew I was feeling too scared and vulnerable to be human right now, and I realized he must have smelt my fear. “Come on.” He stood and gestured for me to follow him. For once, I didn’t feel like I was being ordered around. I felt protected.
