Chapter 10: Joining the pack

2287 Words
Annie drove us back to the pack house, and I grew scared for the first time that evening. Up until now, I had been distracted by Annie’s warmth and Jax’s chaotic personality. But as the car wound its way through the streets, I remembered what Jax had said about werewolves and how tough they were. They would hate me. I was lucky enough that the resident psychopath had decided he liked me. Even luckier that his awesome sister did too. That didn’t mean the rest of the pack would too. When the enormous golden gates came into view, my stomach dropped. The gates swung slowly open, revealing a long dirt driveway surrounded by woodland. Forest stretched endlessly in every direction, dark and wild beneath the evening sky. As we drove farther up the path, the house finally came to view. My jaw nearly hit the floor. House wasn’t the right word. It was a mansion. A huge stone building surrounded by acres of land and backed by miles of untouched forest. “Holy c.rap,” I breathed. Annie grinned. “Yeah, that’s usually the reaction we get.” The second we stepped through the front doors, every ounce of confidence I possessed evaporated. The enormous living room was packed. More than fifty werewolves filled the space. And every single one of them turned to look at me. Heat flooded my face. They’d clearly been waiting. For me. For Jax. For whatever reason, that realization made me want to turn around and run straight back out the door. A loud male laugh broke the silence. “That’s the omega?” The man sounded genuinely disappointed. “f***k me. She looks exactly like what she is. Weak and pathetic.” The words struck harder than I wanted them too. “Shut the f***k up, Joe!” Jax snapped, clearly knowing who it was that had spoken. The whole atmosphere changed instantly. Fear swept through the room and I saw the wolves look fearfully at Jax before quickly averting their eyes. Others subtly moved away. Nobody argued Nobody laughed. They were terrified of him. They weren’t scared of him because he was strong. They were scared because they clearly knew exactly what he was capable of. A man who honestly didn’t look much older than Jax came over to us and I knew, I just knew he was the alpha. Everything about him screamed alpha. Confidence. Authority. Power. He had the same golden-blond hair as Jax and a broad, muscular frame like a damn gladiator. Clearly Jax got the muscular hot bod from dad. The alpha wore a long sleeved black thermal top that clung to his body tightly, showing off all that muscle, and he wore jeans and trainers, somehow managing to make casual clothes look intimidating. Without a word, he looked me over slowly with dark blue eyes, like he was inspecting livestock before making a purchase. My face burned. Before I could process what was happening, he grabbed my chin, turning my head from side to side. I froze. After he’d examined me, he leaned in and sniffed me. My embarrassment intensified until my face burned so hotly I thought I might pass out. I was used to the human world and had never been treated like this before by anyone. He stepped back. “Nice.” He nodded once. “She’ll do.” I wasn’t entirely sure whether to feel relieved or offended. Talking with his attention fully on me, he spoke in a deep commanding voice. “You don’t need to get a job, I’d rather you not be seen out and about alone outside the pack grounds. Other wolves might decide to kill you.” The casual way he said it was terrifying, like it was the most normal thing for werewolves. He rubbed his jaw thoughtfully. “You can cook, clean and help take care of everyone’s needs in the pack in exchange for being allowed to stay here. Fair enough, omega?” I nodded quietly and wisely didn’t make eye contact. “Good.” He gestured toward a hallway. “You can take over from Sheila, our submissive wolf. She’s washing up in the kitchen.” Then he looked at Jax. “Show her where to go.” Jax rolled his eyes, but led me out to where the kitchen was. The kitchen was huge. Standing at one of the sinks was Sheila, she was beautiful. Long red hair fell down in soft waves to her waist. She was so slim and slender her body reminded me of a wolf’s slender frame. Her skin was pale as fresh snow. When she turned to look up at us, she had stunning dark green emerald eyes and naturally red lips. “Oh. Hello, Jax.” She smiled shyly at him and I saw the blush spread across her cheeks. I noticed she kept her gaze lowered and didn’t make direct eye contact in respect. C.rap. Was I supposed to be doing that? Before I could panic further, Jax went over and grabbed her in to a hug. “Hey, beautiful.” She smiled shyly. “You don’t need to keep your head down around me, we’ve been too intimate for that these days, haven’t we?” He winked, and she blushed harder. I wondered if she were one of the females he had dominated in the bedroom. He let her go, and I turned to see a sexy as hell wolf walk into the room. For a moment, genuinely forgot how to breathe. The man looked like some ancient god had wandered into the room by mistake. He had an almost identical face to Jax— the same sharp and high cheekbones, full lips, almond shaped eyes, and sculpted jaw (think Henry cavils chiseled jawline, they all had that) with a button nose— but everything else was different. His eyes were a stunning hazel, to the point they almost looked like the wolf’s gold color. He had the same flecks of gold running through them like Jax did that caught the light whenever he moved, but he didn’t have the gold rim around them. His white t-shirt stretched across an athletic, powerful frame, his muscles bulged and strained against his white t-shirt whenever he moved, he wore black sweatpants, and his bare feet made him somehow seem even more wolf-like. His hair was slightly darker than Jax’s, a rich golden-brown rather than blond, and it was the same tousled messy style Jax had. He was the same height as Jax too, at around 6,2. “Fenris, you’re actually showing your face, you miserable f***k,” Jax grinned. Fenris looked annoyed, but Jax didn’t care and grabbed him into a playful headlock. “Jax, quit it!” “Love you too, brother.” Fenris didn’t make any attempt to escape at first, but when Jax ignored him he fought back, it wasn’t long before he got free and had Jax on the floor who was laughing so hard I worried he might pass out. Another man came in. And somehow he was just as ridiculously attractive. At this point I was beginning to suspect their parents had some kind of divine genetics. He had an identical face to these two, except his eyes were a dark blue with the same flecks of gold running through— something that they all seemed to share. His body was just as muscular and powerful looking, and his hair was also the darkest, it was a warm brown here, but I knew it was that kind of tone where in the right light it would show hints of a golden undertone. It fell into his eyes sexily like the other two. He looked powerful, confident, and entirely aware of both facts. I found myself blushing among these wolf gods. Pfft, it was probably why their parents had given them the names they had. “Jax!” He pulled Jax to his feet and hugged him. “Missed you bro. f***k any crazies in the hospital?” Jax rolled his eyes. “Romulus, do you ever not think about s**x?” Romulus shrugged, and grinning answered, “no.” He went over to Sheila, and gave her a dark smile. “Get on your knees for me, love.” She instantly dropped to her knees with her head bowed, and he grinned at Jax, “I love it when they do that.” Jax pushed him away from Sheila and helped her to her feet. “Quit being a perv, you got a girlfriend, go f***k her.” “I will later.” Romulus’s attention finally landed on me. Seeing me standing here he made his way over to me. He looked me over disapprovingly, and asked, “you couldn’t have gotten us a hot omega?” My face burned. “She is, I like her,” Jax grinned, before I could shrink into the floor. Romulus frowned at him. “Brother, you have no standards. She’s fat and ugly as f.uck.” Jax gave him a look that had Romulus immediately shut up. “You have a girlfriend,” Jax said coldly. “Focus on her, you f.ucking vain p.rick.” Romulus shrugged. “Whatever.” Then he looked directly at me. “Omega girl is all yours, bro.” He actually shoved past me, making me stumble as he left the room. He sooo did not like me, so much for a romantic, Pfft. Fenris was watching us all like we were m.orons and grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, he all but stormed from the room. Jax kissed Sheila on the cheek. “Go rest or something, Rose is going to take over for you.” Sheila looked at me in surprise, then smiled shyly before leaving the room. As she passed me by, she touched my hand lightly with hers, like some form of reassurance it would be alright. I liked her. “You ok doing this?” Jax asked. I nodded, and pulled on the washing up gloves and got to work. For a while, Jax stayed nearby, leaning against the counter and occasionally making sarcastic comments and winding pack members up earning him some dirty looks and eye rolls. Eventually, though, he left. The second he was gone anxiety hit me. Every time a wolf came into the kitchen for something, my shoulders tensed. Every footstep made me glance up. Every deep voice made my stomach twist. I kept waiting for someone to say something cruel. To laugh. To remind me I didn’t belong here. Without Jax there to look out for me, I didn’t know what would happen. Most ignored me completely. A few looked me over curiously. Still, I couldn’t relax. Without Jax here, I felt exposed. Small. Alone. I had finished washing up, cooked for everyone and then washed up again after they had eaten. The alpha surprised me by offering me a plate of food too, and I ate it gratefully before getting back to work. When I was done, my feet were killing me, and the alpha had Fenris come out of his room to show me to mine. I felt so awkward, he seemed super p.issed at being made to do it, but he didn’t say anything mean to me. Fenris wasn’t rude. He wasn’t hostile. But he definitely wasn’t interested in conversation. I hurried after him as he headed upstairs. We climbed to the third floor, passing several open doors along the way. We stopped at the door at the very end, and he opened it up and went inside. The bedrooms I’d seen walking along were enormous. Luxurious. King-sized beds, plush carpets, expensive furniture, a few even had private seating areas. My one was small, but not too bad. The most annoying thing about it was that it was dusty. It had nothing except a small single bed against one wall, a chest of drawers and a beige carpet. Fenris lingered awkwardly in the doorway. For the first time since I’d met him, he actually spoke directly to me. Unlike his brothers’ deep voices, his was rougher. Lower. A little husky. “Sorry it’s dusty.” His eyes swept briefly across the room. “We haven’t used it for a few years.” After a pause, he added, “Dad wanted you in this room.” “That’s ok. Thank you,” I smiled shyly and walked inside. He didn’t smile, but he gave a brief nod, then quietly closed the door behind him. I sat down on the bed and a gust of dust flew up, making me cough and splutter. I got up and tried my best to shake the dust out, but when I slept that night it wasn’t comfortably. I coughed and sneezed continuously until my throat felt sore. I hadn’t shown anyone my real personality yet, not even Jax. I acted sullen and quiet, but it wasn’t the personality for my omega self. Lying awake in the darkness, listening to the distant sounds of the pack house around me, my thoughts drifted. Nobody knew me here. Not really. Not even Jax. They all thought I was quiet. Sullen. Withdrawn. The timid omega who barely spoke. The truth was far more complicated. I hadn’t always been like this. As a child I had been silly, playful, and clumsy. I had always craved being looked after and protected. There had been something soft and carefree about me once. Something undeniably omega. But my parents beat that out of me until I learned to hide it and behave more mature and sensible, though I’d never quite managed to stop the clumsiness.
