Chapter 12: The wolf

“I’m so sorry, Jax said he wants to speak with you.” “Jax? You went down into the basement to talk to him?” He sounded p.issed, and I wisely kept my head low. “I’m sorry, I just needed to see a friendly face.” He snorted a laugh at that and said, “never heard Jax being described as a friendly face before. What happened to you, you look terrible.” “Oh it’s nothing, I’m fine, honestly.” I was surprised at his soft tone when he said, “if someone is hurting you here, you can tell me.” “I don’t want to be a bother or anything.” “You’re not, my bothers and I need to start learning to deal with situations like this and other responsibilities anyway, in two months we become the new alphas of the pack as dad and mum want to retire from it early. Tell me what happened.” I told him, and whereas Jax was hot-tempered and aggressive, Fenris responded more like some exasperated father. “They aren’t supposed to be abusing you like that, I’ll talk to them.” “Please don’t!” I pleaded, and without thinking, I grabbed his arm. He frowned at my hand on his arm and looked up at me. “Jax may like you, but I don’t, I’m not your friend, I’m simply following through with pack rules, nothing more.” I quickly let go of him, and he pushed past me and muttered, “let’s go talk to Jax first, and then I’ll deal with them.” “Hey bro! Looking good,” Jax grinned at Fenris who looked at him completely unimpressed. “What do you want, Jax.” “You f.ucking know what they did to her?” Jax growled, completely dropping the humor. Fenris nodded and said, “I will deal with it.” “I want you to protect Rose, I promised her our pack wasn’t like that, we don’t hurt or attack weak wolves unwarranted.” Fenris looked unreadable, so I had no clue what was going through his head, he answered, “I’ll take care of it, but I’m not following some omega around like I’m her bodyguard.” “Then let me out so I can.” “And risk more bodies piling up? I don’t think so, brother.” “I only hurt monsters, not innocent people,” Jax snapped. “Doesn’t matter, you’re still putting yourself and us at risk.” “I dispose of them very thoroughly , there’s nothing left when I’m done.” Jax said it so calmly and casually that I saw Fenris look taken aback both by his tone and what he had said. He went back to being unreadable and turned to me, asking, “how old are you?” “Twenty,” I replied, confused. “When’s your birthday?” “May tenth.” He looked back at Jax, “perfect, she turns twenty-one in two weeks, the age when she will know who her true mate is, then he can protect her.” Jax leaned his forehead against the cage still holding the bars. “What makes you think she’ll find him that quick and easy, he might not even be in our pack.” “We will see, in the meantime I will sort the issue out.” Fenris walked off after that, and I whispered to Jax, “what does that mean? I’ll find my mate when I’m twenty-one?” “Every female who turns twenty-one, their scent changes, the male will know she’s their mate by her smell because it will be the best f.ucking smell ever, it’s a soul-deep feeling too, but you don’t have to accept your mate, it won’t kill you or anything so dramatic, but you’ll never meet someone who will be as perfect for you, and you’ll always crave them. Like I said before, it usually takes the first kiss to feel the beginning effects of the bond between the two of you, the male marks his female on the neck during an acceptance ritual, and in a way, it’s like a marriage and permanently seals the deal, which sounds creepy as f***k to me, but I guess with your soulmate you won’t care at the time. I don’t f.ucking know, that’s the best way I can explain it for you.” “I have a true mate? A soulmate?” I asked. I’d always grown up believing I’d forever be alone, that no one would ever want me or love me because I was so ugly and a monster as my parents had always told me. “Yeah, of course, everyone has one, but it’s not always easy finding them, they could be in a different pack, a different country, they always seem to find each other eventually though, fate literally pulls you together.” I nodded, and he said, “you better get out of here before dad has a f.ucking tantrum, and make sure my brother deals with those fucks.” I giggled at the tantrum part and made my way back up. Fenris already had Leo on the floor bleeding and submitting along with the other two male wolves whose names I still didn’t know. How had he fought all three so easily and quickly? I thought Jax was scary, and it seemed his quiet brother could be the same. The females, including Jessica, clung to one another and were on their knees showing submission, so he wouldn’t punish them in the same way. “You know the rules here, we don’t attack any wolf without them accepting the challenge, and we absolutely do not ever hurt a weaker wolf than ourselves! If I see our new omega bleeding again, I promise I’ll have you all bleeding and maybe even send you to spend the night in the cage with my brother.” The mention of Jax had them all whimpering and whining from fear. Fenris looked up when I walked in quietly. “Leave!” He snapped to the others, and they quickly got up and left. He came over to me and towered over me at six, two. “They shouldn’t bother you again, but as a way of apology, it’s not much, but is there anything you’d like to do for the rest of the day?” “What do you mean?” I asked. “You don’t have to clean today, so if there’s anything you’d like to do, you can.” “Can I run in my wolf form? I’ve never done it before. I never had the freedom to.” He rose his eyebrows in surprise and nodded. “Of course, the forest is safe for you to roam about as a wolf, it’s private property, and I’ll make sure they don’t follow you.” “Thank you,” I said quietly, he gave a nod then left me. I think I was starting to develop a little crush on Fenris like I had on Jax. Great. I headed outside and entered the forest. I found a quiet spot by some bushes and began the change. I tried to keep quiet, but it was impossible when your bones were breaking and reshaping themselves, I cried out more than once and dug my nails into the dirt. I wanted to scream from the pain, and then finally I was in my full wolf form. It took about fifteen minutes to complete the change and I lay on the floor panting heavily as I adjusted. My wolf form was black like my hair color, my eyes gold. I got up onto all fours and gently trotted along deeper into the forest. This was amazing, I felt so happy and truly like myself, both of which I hadn’t felt in such a long time. It felt like my first true change to wolf. Roaming around in my small bedroom hadn’t felt real, and in the hospital it hadn’t felt good either. I’d only been allowed to change on the full moon, when we were forced to change by the werewolf gene. This was my first voluntary change, and I’d noticed because I had to bring on the change it was slightly more painful than when I had the help of the moon to transform. The forest was massive, and it became darker the deeper in I went, there were so many trees that they blocked out the light, but I felt like I was home. I began to run, and I ran until my lungs ached and burned, when I slowed down I figured I could truly be myself out here with no one around, so I jumped and dived onto the dirt floor and rolled around in it allowing myself to be silly and have fun. I laughed, but it came out a yip. I found butterflies and would creep up on them and pounce, my paws hitting the dirt hard next to the flowers, making the butterflies fly off. I was doing this when I felt eyes on me, turning I saw a dark gray and white wolf watching me, his eyes held humor in them at what I had been doing, if I could have blushed in wolf form I would have. How embarrassing. Werewolves were fiercely dominant and powerful and violent and there I was chasing flipping butterflies, and now I’d been caught doing it. He padded over to me and I got a hold of his scent, he smelt like Jax, like the fresh cold night air, vanilla but also like the forest itself, unlike Jax’s third scent of power. I knew by that last smell that it was Fenris. I tilted my head at him questioningly, and he answered, “I guess I’m doing what my brother told me to do, watching over you, at least for today.” His voice was in my head and I freaked out, my head swung from side to side and my ears flattened in fear, what the holy crap! He must have heard my thoughts because I heard him laugh. “We can communicate internally while in wolf form. Go play, I’ll watch over you.” “That’s embarrassing,” I thought. “Just go play, Rose, I don’t care what you do.” He laid down on the ground and closed his eyes. I knew he was most likely pretending to be asleep for my sake, but I appreciated it and carried on playing. I chased more butterflies because apparently I was a big pup, I did the same with some birds, I even found a small stream and drank some water and began snorting and snuffling, the water tasted filthy, what a moron I was. I looked behind me to see Fenris looking at me in a way that I knew if he were in human form, his eyebrows would have been raised in an ‘what the hell were you doing’ look. I jumped into the water and splashed about soaking my fur and my paws, it was so fun, but it wasn’t fun for long because I’d moved a little too far from Fenris and I saw Jessica, Leo, and the female who had both spilled cherry lemonade on me and performed oral for Fenris standing there. They all looked enraged. Leo looked as bruised as I was. I flattened my ears and lay my head down on my paws as a show of submission, and whined softly. They didn’t care and wasted no time in grabbing me, Leo kicked me in the side, making me yelp, but Jessica shut me up by wrapping some sharp metal wire around my snout. It cut into my skin and I couldn’t make any noise now except to whine. I could have bitten them, but being an omega, it wasn’t in my nature to be aggressive even to protect myself. I wasn’t going to miraculously turn into this strong female wolf, no matter how much I wished I could, that just wasn’t the omega way. Fenris must have heard my first yelp because he came running towards us before they could do anything else. He snarled and growled at them menacingly, and I saw their terror, they hadn’t expected him to be there. He snapped at Jessica and bit her leg, his fangs were so big and sharp he tore the whole of her calf. “We are so sorry,” Leo pleaded, and they got onto their knees with their heads low down, not making eye contact. Fenris growled at them to stay, and he disappeared and returned a few minutes later in human form. He wore nothing but sweatpants, showing off all that perfect muscle and those abs. I noticed he had an Adonis belt going on, and I would have enjoyed the view if I hadn’t been in so much pain. “All of you go back to the pack house now! I will have the alpha himself deal with you seeing as you won’t listen to me.” They tried to beg and plead, but he cut them off, and they started heading back. Fenris bent down and tried to remove the wire from my snout, but they had wound it so tight it wouldn’t budge, and I yelped and whined. “I’m really sorry, it’s not coming off, do you think you can walk back to the pack house, so I can use something to remove it?” I slowly got up and shakily and painfully slowly we finally got back to the house. Everyone stared at me as I went inside. Fenris led me into the kitchen and forbid anyone else coming in. He found some pliers and slowly cut the wire and gently pulled the barbed wire off, ignoring my whimpers and whines because it was the only way to get it all off. His hands had some blood on from my injured snout, and he washed them before coming back with a cloth and gently cleaning my wounds. It was painful, and I tried getting away to the point he had to hold my head in place on the floor so that he could finish cleaning me and put some numbing cream on. I began whining in pain and fear and busy on the task at hand, he murmured, “I’m so sorry, baby, hold on I’m almost done I promise.” I don’t think he’d realized he’d called me baby and I was surprised the quiet and moody werewolf had a softer side to him. He finally let me go and said, “you can shift back safely now.” I whined softly, and he said, “you don’t want to change back to human?” I licked his hand in answer, I wasn’t sure how else to say yes. He looked surprised when I licked him and I felt shy, realising it probably wasn’t something werewolves did, they were wolves, not puppies. Whoops. I was shocked when he said, “ok, well, you can stay in my room until you feel ready to shift back.” He knew I was feeling too scared and vulnerable to be human right now, and I realized he must have smelt my fear.
