Silence settles back in after he leaves and it doesn’t feel empty. It feels measured and intentional like everything else in this place. I sit where they left me and I keep my breathing even. I let my eyes move slowly across the room without turning my head too much and without drawing attention to what I’m doing. Every inch mattered and every detail counts. I take it all in piece by piece and store it where it will not get lost. The chair is bolted down and the metal frame is solid. The restraints are tight but not perfect and the padding under the cuffs has already shifted from the last time I tested it. The door is reinforced and the hinges are on the outside.
