An Arrow

Linda paced back and forth, her frustration evident. Her disappointment was aimed squarely at Tom, who sat with Diana still fussing over his lightly scratched foot. "I can't believe this," Linda muttered, shaking her head. "Tom, you didn’t catch a single fish, and now we have nothing for dinner!" Tom grimaced, more from Linda's scolding than the actual injury. Diana, however, continued to dab at the scratch, treating it like a life-threatening wound. "It's fine, Linda," Diana said, her tone defensive. "Tom tried his best. He’s hurt, can’t you see?" "Hurt?" Linda retorted, rolling her eyes. "That’s a scratch, Diana. It’s not like he got speared through the leg." Realizing her complaints were getting her nowhere, Linda turned her attention to Justin, who was casually grilling the fish he and Lana had caught. The smell wafting through the air was mouthwatering, and her stomach growled loudly, betraying her. "Justin," she called out, walking toward him, "you’ve got plenty of fish. How about sharing some with us?" Justin didn’t even look up from the fire as he turned one of the fish over, letting its skin sizzle against the heat. "Oh, now you want my fish?" he replied with a smirk. "Funny, because earlier, you and Tom were so sure I wouldn’t catch a single one. And let’s not forget how you all practically stole my chicken last time. Don’t even dream of it." Linda gasped, her eyes narrowing as anger flared in her expression. "Justin, you’re being selfish! We’re all in this together—" she snapped, marching up to him. Before Justin could respond, Linda shoved him in frustration, her palms pressing against his chest. The force made him stumble back a few steps, though he caught his balance quickly. He blinked at her, surprised by her boldness, as her fiery gaze locked onto his. Justin’s eyes flicked to the side, catching a glint of metal in the dim firelight. His instincts kicked in as he spotted the arrow slicing through the air, heading straight for Linda. "Get down!" he shouted, lunging forward. Before Linda could react, Justin grabbed her arm and pulled her firmly into his chest, twisting them both just in time. The arrow zipped past, brushing so close that Linda could feel the rush of air as it missed her by a hair's breadth. Thwack! The arrow buried itself deep into the center of the firepit, sending embers scattering and sparks flying. The flames danced around the arrow, the polished wood and sharp metal tip gleaming ominously. Linda clung to Justin, her breath hitching as she realized what had just happened. "What... what was that?" she stammered, her voice shaking. Justin’s arms remained protective around her as his sharp gaze scanned the surrounding darkness. "An arrow," he said grimly, his tone low and focused. "And it was meant for you." The group fell silent, their earlier bickering forgotten as the weight of the situation sank in. Diana let out a small shriek and ducked behind Tom, who stood frozen, his face pale. Lana crouched low beside the fire, her wide eyes darting nervously. Justin released Linda gently but kept her behind him, his muscles tense as he scanned the shadows. His voice was firm but calm as he ordered, "Stay low and stay close." For a moment, the crackling fire was the only sound until faint, deliberate footsteps echoed from the darkness. Someone was out there, and they weren’t here by accident. Tom was trembling visibly, clutching Diana’s arm and positioning himself behind her. “W-what do we do?!” he stammered, his voice barely above a whisper. “Tom, stop hiding behind me!” Diana hissed, equally terrified but clearly annoyed by Tom’s cowardice. Justin shot them a sharp glance. “Both of you, behind me. Now. Stay low.” Without hesitation, Lana and Linda moved behind Justin, crouching as he instructed. Lana gripped Linda’s arm tightly, her face pale but determined. “Justin, where are you going?” Justin crouched down, gripping the makeshift spear tightly in one hand and a burning piece of wood from the fire in the other. He gave them a brief, reassuring look. “I need to see who’s out there. Stay together and don’t move unless I say so.” “Justin, don’t!” Linda whispered urgently, her voice laced with fear. “It’s too dangerous!” “Trust me,” he replied firmly, his gaze unwavering. As he crept toward the treeline, the flickering flame in his hand cast eerie shadows that danced across the thick foliage. The air was thick with tension, every crackle of the fire and rustle of leaves amplifying their anxiety. Justin stopped just short of the edge of the firelight. “Who’s there?” he called out, his voice steady but loud enough to echo into the darkness. No reply came, only the unsettling sound of branches creaking in the distance. The forest was now pitch black beyond the glow of the campfire, the thick canopy of trees blocking even the faintest starlight. Justin’s heart pounded as he peered into the shadows, every instinct on high alert. Behind him, Lana clutched Linda’s hand tighter. “Justin, please don’t go too far,” she pleaded softly, her voice barely audible. “Stay where you are,” Justin ordered without turning back, his focus entirely on the unseen threat. The silence felt oppressive, almost deafening, as Justin took another cautious step forward. The firelight behind him barely illuminated the thick underbrush ahead. His grip tightened on the spear as his eyes scanned every shadow, every flicker of movement, ready for anything—or anyone—to appear. Justin crouched down, inspecting the faint outline of footprints in the damp soil. The marks were distinct—boot treads, not something any of them were wearing. His brows furrowed as he ran his fingers over the indentations, noting the size and depth. Whoever it was, they were heavy and deliberate in their movements. He scanned the surrounding area with sharp eyes, his spear at the ready, but the dense forest offered no further clues. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the distant rustle of leaves and the occasional crack of a twig underfoot. Rising slowly, Justin turned back toward the camp, his mind racing. Boots... They weren’t stranded here alone.
