Chapter 1
Meredith is my name.
My name is said to mean ‘great ruler’ and in many aspects I find that to be true in my own little world but to the rest of the world I am sure it would have been comical.
I wasn’t great or a ruler and that wasn’t me being hard on myself, its just that I tend to go by things quietly. I don’t want masses following my lead and worshipping me, that was my sister’s dreams. I liked to blend in so that I could just do my own thing and hopefully not get picked on for being different.
I rummaged through my messy closet and tried to find something to wear for yet another day at Crestview High. I didn’t really care to dress up, maybe because we were a small town and most of the people I saw everyday were just ordinary. Or maybe it was the fact that no one would pay much attention to me anyway, the only time their eyes were briefly on me was when I was out on the soccer field or beside my sister.
Once I changed in the changing room it was like I had stolen the Invisible cloak from Harry himself. I didn’t mind it much, sure most of the girls at age 17 were out socializing and making sure they were landing dates with their crush. I stuck to the crushes I had on my bedroom walls and in my hopeless romantic books I read, they could never disappoint me.
“Meredith! We are going to be late!” I heard my sister’s voice before she burst through my door.
“There is a door for a reason, Mel!” I rolled my eyes as I threw a baggy shirt over to accompany my jeans and sneakers.
I stared at my sister as she wore something similar yet managed to make it look way more fashionable than I had the energy to try to do. She had tied her baggy t-shirt into a knot so it accentuated her assets much more and her jeans were tight.
“Oh my word, how do you even function with your closet looking like this?” Her eyes widened as she took in the state it was in. “Please let me organize it for you”
“Please no. I understand what’s happening in there” I shook my head as it was my own little organized mess.
“I am sure you do. Anyway, let's go. I am not getting detention again because of you” She grabbed my hand and I quickly picked up my backpack.
My sister was head cheerleader and we were both pretty smart and did well. I would always get the confused look when we entered school together, we were twins yet it seemed my spark was dimmed while hers shined so bright.
I was bullied quite abit when we were younger and hadn’t told my sister about it because we were in separate classes at the time but once she found out she ended up getting suspended for beating the kid up. No one knew that side of her, the lengths she would go to protect me because at school she didn’t need to go to that extremities. She was gorgeous, knew how to do her make-up perfectly and style her clothes enough to become a trendsetter. So, all she needed to do was make sure everyone knew I was her sister and that she adored me.
“Are you ready for your first game for the semester this weekend?” She questioned as she parked the car.
“I am always ready” I smiled.
“Okay, Miss Conceited” She giggled before staring over at me. “You know, I could make that outfit look cuter instead of lazy in a minute, if you let me.”
“I don’t like the idea of people knowing what my body looks like” I shrugged.
“Why? You have curves in all the right places”
“We are twins. And I am the bigger twin that would be obvious” I mumbled as my face was rounder, my hips were wider, and my skin wasn’t as flawless. That’s the thing with having someone that’s almost a reflection of you, when it didnt match up people would make it known when she wasn’t by my side to protect me.
“You are not big. Even if you were, you should flaunt what our mother gave you. Anyway, feel free to call on my services in the future” She smiled before touching up her make-up.
I got out of the car and waited for her to walk around, “That’s the difference between us, you love all eyes on you when we walk in and I hate it.”
“I wish you wouldn’t. It's nice to feed off of, half of them probably hate me but they still stare which must mean I am good to look at and…” She laughed out as she was lifted off her feet by her boyfriend of the last four years, Adam.
“Hi there, Meredith. And hello baby” He smiled and kissed her before setting her down.
I smiled in return while walking beside them as we casually talked about what assignments needed to be in. I heard a loud sound that I hadn’t heard before and the way everyone else glanced around, they heard it as well. The sound came from a motorbike speeding down the road but it slowed down as it entered the parking lot.
“Who is that?” I heard Adam’s voice while my eyes filled with curiosity along with the rest.
Like I said, we were a small town where everybody knew everybody and motorbikes weren’t really a thing, for school kids anyway. Whoever it was had their back turned to us as they took off their helmet and soon replaced it with a hoodie which prevented a glance of their face. It was definitely a guy though, he had broad shoulders, the body of a football player.
It was the first time I had seen everyone’s eyes on someone that wasn’t my sister or Adam but while I noticed the attention he was getting he didn’t seem to care as he looked down while walking and we watched as he entered the school.
I pulled my gaze off the disappearing figure while I heard everyone questioning each other, the buzz would probably be gone by the end of the day.
I heard Mel’s voice, “I don’t know. But I am sure we will find out”
