THE PROPOSALOF LOGIC
**Chapter 1: The Proposal of Logic** The rain hit the glass walls of the Sterling Tower lobby like a thousand tiny calculations refusing to add up. Aria Quinn stood under the overhang, clutching her worn leather portfolio, watching water stream down the polished marble. She was twenty minutes early for the most important interview of her life—and already soaked from the knees down. She had rehearsed every possible answer. Strengths: precision, loyalty, an almost obsessive ability to find patterns in chaos. Weaknesses: trusting people too easily, and the fact that her last relationship had ended with a polite text and a returned house key. None of those answers felt useful when the elevator doors opened and a tall man in a dark suit stepped out, phone pressed to his ear, voice low and sharp. “I don’t care what the board prefers. The merger happens on my terms or it doesn’t happen.” He ended the call, slipped the phone into his pocket, and finally looked up. Their eyes met. Aria felt the familiar jolt of recognition mixed with something colder. Alexander Sterling. CEO of Sterling Dynamics. The man whose face appeared on every business magazine cover, the one who had turned a mid-sized tech firm into a global powerhouse before thirty-five. The one whose personal life remained a carefully locked vault. He studied her for a second longer than politeness required. “You’re Aria Quinn.” She blinked. “I—yes. I’m here for the executive assistant position.” “You’re early.” He glanced at the rain still pouring outside. “And wet. Come up.” It wasn’t a request. The private elevator rose in silence. Aria kept her eyes on the polished doors, trying not to notice the way his presence seemed to take up more space than one person should. When the doors opened onto the top floor, the city stretched out below them like a living equation—lights, movement, endless variables. Alexander led her into a corner office that felt more like a command center than a workplace. He didn’t sit behind the massive desk. Instead he leaned against it, arms crossed, watching her. “The interview is a formality,” he said. “Your résumé is impressive. Top of your class, three years managing complex schedules for a smaller firm, zero scandals. You’re exact. I need exact.” Aria straightened. “Thank you. I’m ready to start whenever—” “There’s a second position available,” he interrupted. “One that doesn’t appear on any public listing.” She waited. Alexander’s voice stayed calm, almost clinical. “My board is restless. They want stability. A public image of… permanence. Marriage would quiet them. A real relationship would complicate things. Emotions are inefficient. Contracts are not.” The rain outside seemed louder. “I’m proposing a one-year marriage of convenience,” he continued. “You live in my penthouse. You attend the necessary events. You present as my wife. In return, you receive a salary five times what this assistant role pays, full access to my legal team if anything goes wrong, and at the end of the year a clean divorce plus a substantial settlement. No public drama. No unexpected attachments. Purely logical.” Aria’s fingers tightened around her portfolio. Part of her wanted to laugh. Another part—the tired, practical part that had been counting every dollar since her mother’s medical bills started arriving—listened carefully. “Why me?” she asked. “Because you’re intelligent enough to understand the terms, discreet enough to keep them, and currently in a position where this arrangement could change your circumstances significantly.” His gaze didn’t waver. “I’m not offering romance. I’m offering a clear equation. You solve for security. I solve for control.” Silence stretched between them. Outside, lightning flashed across the skyline. Aria thought of the unpaid invoices waiting on her kitchen table. She thought of the way people looked at her when they learned she was still living in a one-bedroom apartment at twenty-six. She thought of every careful plan that had fallen apart the moment feelings entered the picture. She met his eyes again. “I want the contract in writing before I say yes,” she said. “Every clause. Every exit condition. And I want it reviewed by my own lawyer.” A faint, almost approving tilt touched the corner of Alexander’s mouth. “Done.” He straightened, walked to the desk, and pulled a thin folder from a drawer as if it had been waiting there all along. He placed it in front of her. “Read it carefully, Miss Quinn. Once you sign, the equation begins.” Aria opened the folder. The first page was headed in clean black type: **Marriage Agreement – Confidential** She began to read, the rain still tapping against the glass like quiet, relentless arithmetic.
