Chapter 19

294 Words
A Desperate Gamble As they sped through the city, the SUV closing in on them, Max knew they had to think fast. They couldn't outrun their pursuers forever, and they needed a plan to shake them off their tail. "Jessica, I need you to trust me," Max said, his eyes locked on the road ahead. "We're going to make a break for the docks. We can lose them in the crowd." Jessica nodded, her eyes wide with fear. "Okay, I trust you," she said. Max floored it, the car surging forward as they sped towards the docks. The SUV was right behind them, its tires screeching as it took the corners. As they approached the docks, Max could see the crowds of people milling around. He knew it was their only chance to lose their pursuers. "Hold on!" Max shouted, as he swerved the car into the crowd. The car bounced and jolted as they navigated the crowded docks. Jessica held on for dear life, her eyes closed as she prayed they would make it out alive. As they emerged from the crowd, Max glanced in the rearview mirror. The SUV was nowhere to be seen, lost in the chaos of the docks. "We did it," Max said, his voice filled with relief. "We lost them." Jessica opened her eyes, a smile spreading across her face. "We did it," she repeated, her voice filled with wonder. But as they drove away from the docks, Max knew that their ordeal was far from over. James would not give up easily, and they would have to be constantly on guard to avoid his wrath. As they disappeared into the crowded streets of the city, Max couldn't shake the feeling that they were living on borrowed time.
