The New Neighbor
Saturday mornings were Lara's favorite.
The neighborhood always seemed quieter before the rest of the world woke up. Birds chirped from the mango tree outside her bedroom window, and a cool breeze drifted through the curtains, carrying the scent of fresh rain from the night before.
She stretched, reached for the sketchbook on her bedside table, and smiled at the unfinished drawing of a modern house. Designing beautiful homes had been her dream since she was a child.
"One day," she whispered, tracing the lines with her pencil, "I'll build homes that people never want to leave.
A loud rumble interrupted her thoughts.
Frowning, Lara walked to the window
A large moving truck had stopped in front of the empty house next door.
For months, the house had stood silent after the previous family moved away. The overgrown lawn and closed curtains had become part of the street's scenery. Seeing people there again immediately caught her attention.
Movers climbed in and out of the truck carrying furniture while a middle-aged woman checked items off a clipboard.
Then someone stepped out of the passenger side.
He looked about her age.
Dressed in a black T-shirt, blue jeans, and white sneakers, he adjusted the headphones hanging around his neck before lifting two heavy boxes with surprising ease.
He laughed at something one of the movers said, and the sound carried faintly across the quiet street.
Without realizing it, Lara smiled too.
"Who are you?" she murmured.
She watched for another moment before a voice called from downstairs.
"Lara! Breakfast!"
She pulled the curtain closed, unaware that the young man next door had just noticed someone watching from the upstairs window.
As she headed downstairs for breakfast, the rich aroma of freshly prepared food filled the air. Her stomach growled instantly.
Lara smiled.
Her mother, Mrs. Williams, was in the kitchen placing steaming plates on the dining table. Judging by the smell alone, Lara already knew what was on the menu.
"Good morning, Mum," Lara greeted with a bright smile.
Mrs. Williams looked up and returned the smile.
"Good morning, sunshine. I was beginning to think you'd sleep through breakfast."
Lara laughed softly as she pulled out a chair and sat at the dining table.
"I'm awake now, especially after smelling my favorite breakfast.
"I'm glad you like it," her mother replied, setting a plate in front of her. "Eat while it's still hot."
Lara picked up her fork but paused before taking a bite.
"Mum," she began, "did you see the family that moved into the house next door yesterday?"
Mrs. Williams nodded as she poured herself a cup of tea.
"I did. They seem like a nice family."
"Do you know anything about them?" Lara asked curiously.
"Only that they moved here because of Mr. Carter's new job. I haven't had the chance to introduce myself yet."
Lara tried to sound casual, though her curiosity was obvious.
"I saw a boy helping the movers yesterday. He looked about my age."
Mrs. Williams smiled knowingly.
"Oh? So you were watching the new neighbors?"
Lara's cheeks warmed immediately.
"I wasn't watching," she protested. "I just happened to look out the window."
"If you say so," her mother replied with a teasing smile.
Lara rolled her eyes and laughed, deciding it was better to change the subject before her mother teased her any further.
"Let me do the dishes," Lara offered as she stood up from the table.
Mrs. Williams smiled appreciatively.
"Thank you, sweetheart."
Lara gathered the plates and carried them to the sink. She turned on the tap, rolled up her sleeves, and began washing the dishes while humming softly to herself. A few minutes later, she dried her hands with a kitchen towel and placed the clean plates back in the cupboard.
"All done," she said with a satisfied smile.
Mrs. Williams looked at her proudly.
"You're a wonderful daughter, Lara."
Lara walked over and wrapped her mother in a warm hug.
"I love you, Mum."
"I love you too, sweetheart."
With one last smile, Lara made her way upstairs to her room, completely unaware that her ordinary day was about to take an unexpected turn.
As soon as Lara reached her room, she closed the door behind her and flopped onto her bed with a contented sigh.
Her eyes drifted toward the window overlooking the house next door.
The new neighbors.
For some reason, they had been on her mind all morning. She couldn't explain why, but she found herself wondering what they were like—especially the young man she had seen helping with the moving boxes.
Shaking her head, she laughed softly at herself.
"Why am I even thinking about him?" she wondered.
Needing a distraction, Lara reached for her phone on the bedside table and opened her chat with her best friend, Mia.
Lara: Guess what? The empty house next door finally has new neighbors.
Almost instantly, three dots appeared on the screen, showing that Mia was already typing.
Mia: What? When did that happen?
Lara smiled as she quickly typed a reply.
Lara: Yesterday. I only noticed because a moving truck pulled up outside.
A few seconds later, another message popped up.
Mia: Tell me the important part... Is there a cute guy?
Lara rolled her eyes and laughed.
Lara: Mia! That's the first thing you ask?
Mia: Of course. Now answer the question.
Lara glanced toward the window before replying.
Lara: Maybe... I only saw him from my room.
Within seconds, Mia responded again.
Mia: I can't wait to meet this "maybe." Don't forget to introduce me when I come over!
Lara shook her head, smiling to herself.
Only Mia could turn new neighbors into a romance story.
Lara chuckled as she locked her phone and placed it on the bedside table.
"Mia is impossible," she murmured.
She walked over to the window one last time before drawing the curtains. Across the street, the lights in the house next door slowly came on, and for a brief moment, she caught a glimpse of the young man carrying another box inside.
He paused, as if sensing someone was watching him, and looked toward her window.
Startled, Lara stepped back and quickly closed the curtains.
Her heart raced.
"What was that?" she whispered, pressing a hand against her chest.
Little did she know that by this time tomorrow, the mysterious boy next door wouldn't be a stranger anymore.
He would become part of a story that would change both of their lives forever.
