“Mother!” Phoebe rushed up to me and pulled me to her. “Please, what has come over you?” Napoleon turned away and walked toward the edge of the summit. I guessed from his expression that he did not understand my rapid-fire rant. His English was good, but not that good. Jeremiah waited until Napoleon had given us some space to talk, and he raised his hands to plead with me. “Look, I’m not here to fight you.
