THE FOLLOWING THURSDAY night, my doorbell rang. I rolled off the couch, stumbled over the tissue box on the floor then staggered to the front door. “Hey, Annie,” Sarah greeted. “Are you feeling alright?” I rubbed my swollen eyes and attempted to pull myself together. “Yeah.” Sarah tilted her head to the side, giving me a knowing motherly look. “Maybe I’m not alright but I’m not contagious.” I opened the door all the way and let her in. “Sorry, I forgot you were coming over tonight.” At least tonight wasn’t the night she was bringing that new guy, Lowan, along.
