"What are you doing in this cold night?" Daniel asked me as he take off his coat.
I rubbed my arms. "My ears are tired. Music is too loud."
His coat found his way on my arms, he wrapped my arms with it, the scent of his perfume came to my senses.
"You might be cold." Although, his eyes were colder than the night.
His coat were gray, he was only wearing a black shirt inside. I found my eyes looking into his, and his into mine.
"You." He continued to stare at me. "You look good tonight."
My knees got weak from his words. I never imagined that he can say those words, let alone he would be saying those to me. His eyes were fixated on me.
Suddenly I can feel the beating in my chest. For the first time, I got this weird feeling as if there's a little movement on my stomach.
'Uhmm.." I cannot find the words.
He was just staring at me, waiting for my reply.
"Uhmm. I don't think so, but thanks." My eyes were glued on the ground.
"You are." He stepped a little forward then tapped my head as gently as possible.
With the stars above the sky being our only light in this garden, I saw his smile occupying his face again.
"Have you read the memoirs?" He looked at me again.
"I did. Just the first parts." I mumbled. I really don't have the leisure to lay down and read a book.
Now, I'm just waiting for the next call and the next instruction.
Sitting next to him, I can hear his breathing, he was just staring blankly on the fountain across us.
"Why do you want me to read that? I still don't understand." I moved a little closer and face him.
"You will see." He just replied straight.
We sat there without talking for around five minutes, just feeling the cold air and away from the blasting music of the party.
"Can I ask you something?" I asked shyly.
"Ask away."
"Is it hard to be the President of the Student Council?"
He just laughed a little. "I thought you are going to ask about something else. I didn't know you were curious." He sat straight and turned his face to meet my eyes.
"Yes, it is." He sighed a little, his eyes turned cold again. "Especially when it is not the students who breaks the rules, but the administration itself."
"What do you mean?" I asked. I might get something from him.
"Well, you see what happened last time, Joe was fired because of the news that broke out. I don't think the university didn't know what was happening, I bet they fired Joe to save their asses." He just blurted out.
"Oh. That." I just replied plainly.
"Anyway, we will be having a formal party next week. Do you wanna come?"
How can he just ask me like that? Aly don't overthink, I am sure he was just asking you for attendance.
"Yeah sure."
"I mean, come with me?" There. He said it.
My eyes roamed around instantly, trying to find the right words, I fixed my watch then brushed my hair.
"With you?" I asked him again.
"Yes Alyanna, me." His eyes didn't leave mine.
"I.. Uh. Wait." My head is suddenly spinning.
"I'll take you somewhere three days before the event. Let's find you a dress."
I am not taking this all. I am confused. I am surprised.
"You are not answering." His face became worried. "It is okay, if you don't want to come, I am not forcing you."
"No, it's okay. Sure. I'll come.. with you." I am kind of stuttering but I managed to look at him straight in the eye.
How many times will I be seeing Daniel smile tonight?
"Wanna grab something inside? You might be hungry."
Actually I am not, but I nodded anyway.
We were about to meet the main course table when someone tapped him from behind. It was Andrea.
"I didn't know you were coming." Andrea leaned forward to hug him, which he responded coldly.
"My dad told me to go." I cannot find the curved lips of Daniel. He went cold again.
"Tell your dad I said hi." She gave him a smile, and he just nodded. "By the way, can we talk D? I have a lot to tell you."
"Well, I don't, and I am with a friend here." Daniel pointed at me.
Andrea gave me a cold stare then suddenly she shifted and gave me a smile. " Well, I guess your friend here won't mind if I talk to you, right, Alyanna?" Her smile were sweet but her eyes were piercing me.
"Of course. I'll be going now Daniel."
I walked out of the halls instantly. I don't want that kind of attention. I walked as fast as I could, from the hall glasses, I can see Daniel running to my direction but was cut off by a man.
"I'll take her home." I heard Grey.
"Move. Your. Hands." I turned around to see the two guys staring at each other, their face were hard. No one is bulging.
"You think they will leave her alone if you chase after her now?" Grey pushed him a little. "Go to your needy ex."
Daniel was taken aback by his statement. He then stared at me for a while, and I did the same.
He went back to Andrea.
He went back there.
I don't know, but at the back of my mind I was hoping he will come to me, but he didn't.
Well who am I.
"So, there is my partner. I am hungry, but I don't want to be here anymore."
"Same. Take me to Mitchell's, partner."
He smile when I called him that. His lips curved upwards and I can see his eye beaming again.
I am glad I have Grey. He takes care of me, a lot.
He's there whenever I need saving.
--
"Thank you." We arrived at the Mitchell's. This place looks more comforting than the one earlier.
" I want a fried chicken." I said to him
He laughed at me. "Seriously?"
"Fried chicken." I said plainly.
He laughed again but ordered anyway.
He was texting someone on his phone. His eyes turned from this beaming orbs to a cold stare.
" Are you okay?"
His body shifted to my side. He smiled, that was fake. "Yes, I am. Just business."
I looked at the mobile bar next to him. "If you have anything in mind, you can tell me." I just shrugged. "You're always there for me, I can't do anything for you."
His eyes were fixed on me, little by little his smile is coming back again.
"You just gotta be there and I am fine."
I arched my eyebrows. "Well I am here, and you are not fine.
He was about to retort but I cut him off. "Don't give me reasons, you are not fine."
He waved his hands in surrender. "Okay you got me." He chuckled a little. " I'll tell you, soon, okay? Just not tonight."
I gave him an okay sign.
"Let's not ruin tonight. We got a good view here, and less people."
Roaming my eyes around there were at least five more people aside from us which makes the area quiet.
"It's quiet here. My ears were hurting at the party."
"Well, thank you for coming with me here, I need an escape, too."
"Well, I asked you to take me here. I guess this is my "to go place" now." I said to him, quoting my hands in the air.
He just laughed at me. "Anytime you want, partner."
He winked.
This guy, he really looks innocent whenever he smiles, but he is a total opposite when he is mad. Just like earlier, from the way he looked when he was confronting Daniel, I relied on him.
Although, I got this thought at the back of my head that Daniel would come to me, but I erased those thoughts when I saw Grey.
It's still a question to me why Grey wants my company, but whatever, I actually enjoys his company. He makes me not think of what might happen in the future. Being with him makes me think of nothing else but what is in front of me right now.
Just like now, I am erasing all my concerns. I just want to enjoy my fried chicken.
---
"Hi Drake. Take us to the university."
"Alright." Drake smiled at us as he opened the door.
Inside he played some music.
I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the rest of the time.
"Tired, partner?" He looked at me, he seemed worried but his eyes were talking, speaking to me. He looks happy.
"Yes, but I am happy." I grinned. "Not because of the first party, but because of the fried chicken."
He chuckled at my response. "Glad to know that."
