I waited for Obie to show up after Bruno and Alaric left. He was clearly suffering from some kind of mating bond overload. The poor guy wasn’t used to being around his mate and it showed with the amount of drool on his chin the moment he saw her. I laughed thinking back on how I first met Sheena. We were kids, growing up together made us friends already. She was just a year younger than me so we weren’t even that far apart for shifting. Her porcelain skin was so smooth when I first touched her after our bond took. We were teenagers so our parents told us we needed to be patient. It was the hardest few years of my life. Every moment I saw her my heart skipped a beat, she was perfection in the form of a young doll. Her smile was a smile that I felt through every limb in my body. I wanted nothing more than for her to be happy.
I was retrieved to the present, whisked away from my fond memories by the backdoor to the night club opening.
“See ya later Charlie.” That voice, it was Alaric’s mate. Her shift must have been over for the night and here I was standing in the middle of a parking lot with so few cars it was awkward. She passed me quickly avoiding my eye contact, smart girl.
“Hey.” I called, but she continued to walk keys in her hand ignoring me. I called again, “Hey, Miss.” It was stupid for me to be seen with her weeks before we were planning on kidnapping her, but then again maybe I could have her drop her guard if only slightly.
She turned with a warning look that screamed she had pepper spray and knew how to fight. She recognised me thankfully, but looked around for my companion. “Hey, your birthday boy’s friend right?”
I nod and toss her a smile, “Yeah,” needing to think quickly I continued to weave a web of lies to throw her off the scent, “WE got into a fight. The dorks left me here.”
She shrugged and turned her key in the door opening it, “Well, I’d cut him some slack.”
Funny she didn’t even know him and yet she was already defending him like the good mate she clearly was going to be, “Cut him some slack?” I turn my head, egging her on.
“Yeah, he didn’t seem too happy to be here tonight. I’m sure whatever frat house you boy crawled out of has some bro code.”
Ah, so she thought we were college students, makes sense this was a heavy college city. One third of these buildings were for the campus. Those large apartments weren’t just for citizens, dorm rooms and frat houses were a huge part of the culture here. It was one of the reasons we chose this place to celebrate our alpha’s birthday. “Well, he was kind of heart broken tonight anyway.”
“Ah, sorority chick drama?” She spoke like a college girl, but one who wasn’t entirely enthralled in the campus life.
“What are you in a sorority?” I joke, she screams lone wolf, but I could tell she was starting to lower her guard.
“Not me.” She laughed, “I’m too busy, you know last year of school’s kind of rough.”
“Oh really? What are you studying?” I needed to come up with some human subject, if she asked, but of course my terrible non-humanness was about to get the better of me.
She shut the door to her car remaining outside which surprised me. Maybe this kidnapping was going to be easier than I thought? “I’m in a few different programs. My forte is the social sciences. I love to study people.”
People? Well, certainly she’d get a kick out of the werewolf people, “That’s interesting.”
“What about you?”
Knew it. I thought for a second unable to come up with any major, so I just decided on something all humans know, “Oh, well I’m undecided still. You know how it is. Everything seems interesting, but not enough to be what I want to do for a living.”
She nodded not fully convinced, but then again I had no way of knowing if I gave away that I wasn’t a college student.
“Sorry,” I joke scratching the back of my head, “I’m just waiting for someone to come pick me up.”
“Oh well most of the dorms aren’t too far from here.” There it was, she was catching onto me.
“Yeah, I don’t live in the dorms.”
“Ah a legacy?”
A what? Thankfully she kept talking.
“Well, I’m sure whatever limo picks you up is going to be much better than whatever jeep your friends were driving.”
More human nonsense.
The awkward silence was thankfully relieved when Obie showed up. He was wearing the usual tired look and clearly wasn’t happy to be distrubed. “This better be good Theo!” his gruff voice echoed through the empty parking lot.
“So you were picked up by someone without a car?” She looked around re-opening her door. Caution returned to her face.
Fuck. “This is Obie, he’s like my uncle of sorts.” He was the old alpha’s beta, which means everything I learned, I learned from him, but that was something she’d learn after the shift.
“Nice to meet you. I’m going to leave now.” She smiled and quickly got into her car locking the door behind her. The car started and she drove away before Obie had time to get any closer.
“Damn you.” I turned to Obie, “She was almost trusting me.”
He laughed at my optimism, which I guess was slightly misplaced, “Let’s follow the girl. Alaric said she was his mate?”
“Sure is.” I nod, she was something special. WE both ducked into an alley shifting and placing our clothes under a dumpster. She wasn’t going to be watching for two wolves, but then again everyone was asleep so hopeful anyone still awake would think we were stray dogs.
For being a stray I was damn beautiful. My silver and gray wolf was a stark contrast to the red and tan wolf with patches of grey in his fur displaying his age. Granted neither of us were as striking as the pure black of our alpha, but he was expected to be gorgeous. Surely once his mate saw him she’d fall madly for him.
“Thankfully she’s one of the few on the road.” For being older Obie was still spry. He had no issues keeping up with me and when we caught up to her car he was able to easily maneuver through the parked cars to stay out of sight.
She pulled into the garage and I signalled for Obie to stay back. Only one of us should approach her. I was clearly improving this entire, but it was my first human stalking. I had no idea what I was doing.
I could hear her whistling as she got out of the car. I ducked around the corner keeping a close eye on her. She went to a paid of large glass doors and I had to act fast. I rushed up behind her hoping she wouldn’t see me but she stopped suddenly turning around. “Well hello dear.” She smiled as I skidded to a halt. “It’s pretty late for you to be out.”
Bending down she reached her hand out to me. Why one earth was she acting his way? “Hungry?” She dug into her bag pulling out a piece of plastic wrapped meat, “Here.” She laid it on the ground scooting it closer to me. “Go on, such a pretty boy.”
I couldn’t argue with her about that, but it was a little too condescending for me. I knew Sheena was going to have questions for me when I got back to the pack. I feigned reluctance but then snatched the meat quickly eating it.
“Goodness. Poor guy.” She looked around maybe trying to see if I had an owner? “Hmm, well I can’t let you just stay out here. You’re clearly not a stray. Someone’s gotta be looking for you.” She stood up placing her hands on her hips. “Okay, well, you’re going to come with me then.” She opened the door inviting me inside.
If I go in she’ll trust my wolf, which could make it easier to take her later. Then again, if I go with her I’m going to have to stay there until she lets me out. It was dangerously close to the full moon. If I get stuck there she could get hurt.
“Not coming in?”
Damn the lady drove a hard bargain.
“Go in.” Obie’s voice sounded in my head. “If you go in we’ll know which room she’s in.”
“True.” I agree and start to move my feet.
“Now don’t bark. You’re a pretty boy, but I’ll throw you out the moment you get loud.” Well she was certainly an alpha’s mate. Those orders almost carried a little weight to them. Almost.
We walked up three flights of stairs and entered the first door directly across from the stairwell. At least it will make for a quick get away.
“It’s not going to be all fancy like you’re used to.” She joked, almost treating me like a human, “I’m sure you’re like some special show dog.”
I’d like to think I’d win some kind of award.
“At least I can hope for a nice reward for you.” She leaned down scratching my ears, “Such a cutie.”
Damn it, Alaric was going to know she touched me behind my ears. It wasn’t an intimate touch, but it was more than he ever got from her.
Opening the door I couldn’t believe how bare the place was. She had furniture that was
Clearly just supplied by the building for all the rooms. There was a suitcase that was being used as a dresser, which was another great thing for us. We could easily pack this place away, it’ll be like she was never here. Sadly though my eyes caught the sight of her bed. It was in ruins, very minimal sheets that were all kinds of worn out. The pillows were not in much better condition and the spare bed she had wasn’t exactly being used. I took the spare bed making myself comfortable.
“Well sure.” She joked as she watched me lay down, “You are an awfully tame dog.” She dug through the contents of a shelf on her window getting a bowl and filling it with water in an oddly misplaced sink in the corner of the room. “Now, please behave. I’ve got an early day tomorrow.”
How early? It was three thirty in the morning. I looked over at her as she crashed onto the bed kicking her shoes off.
I couldn’t afford to go to sleep, if I slipped too deeply I’d shift back into a human. I’m certain she’d have a very difficult time coping with me naked in the bed next to her. Not only that but Alaric would certainly kill me.
“How is she?” It was Alaric, he wasn’t close, but Obie had to have filled him in on what was happening.
“She’s fine. I mean she’s sleeping right now.”
“Good, don't think you’re getting away with the touches.” oh great he knew. “It’s taking everything I have to not kill you right now.”
“Relax, she thinks I’m a dog.”
“You are.” The insult radiated through my mind and I shook myself feeling the alpha’s anger.
“Sorry. I don’t really know what I’m doing.”
“Relax.” he mimicked back, “My parents are in the loop, they’re going to work up something to explain her disappearance, meanwhile you make sure no one approaches her, she’s safe, and-”
“I’d hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I honestly think she’s going to be fine. I’m not going to stick around after tomorrow night though. She’ll be far safer without me here.” The full moon affects us all in different ways, the alphas were always able to be sane, but I was always a tad on the crazy side. My wolf needed to run free and if I couldn't, well there was hell to pay.
“I’ve got a plan for that.”
“Well thank you alpha for having a plan.”
Whatever this plan was I surely hoped it involved me dropping this act. Every second she touched me with that human affection I could feel Sheena’s life threatening glares.
